Prince soldout to Verizon! What's next Viagra?

Prince has totally disappointed me by becoming a corporate sellout.....the guitar video made me cry.....

First he goes and becomes a Vegas Lounge act

then he lets citibank whore him out

now verizon?

I thought it was about the MUSIC.....

you never saw Jimi hendrix Or miles davis doing cell phone commercials and credit card gigs cuz they had integrity

What's next Prince?

Viagra commercials with Little red corvette in the background?

first, i went to vegas and it wasn't no "lounge" act.

second, what's wrong with using different avenues to promote your music, especially when you can do so without the record label calling the shots?

1. I went to the vegas show too and I can say it was not a "lounge" act.

2. marketing + advertising + promotion = big exposure (music/perfume etc.)

Prince is not selling out.

You need to stop comparing Prince to those other people, they did things that Prince is way to smart to even try, okay so just because they didn't do it doesn't make them any wiser then he is. regardless of what he may or not do in the future doesn't make him a sellout and guess what he's still on top, where are you, following his EVERY move!

I don't understand why people prefer their favorite artists to be broke. In my mind, if an artist changes his music in order to please a record company, then that is selling out. If an artist is pleased with his music, then I say let them get as much money as they can.

errr, so he's going to spend a couple of months in London, does that make him a London lounge act? Prince is approaching 50. Comparing his busines decisions to Hendrix who lived in the hippiest of times and died at 26 is just unbelievably DUMB! Prince has done the indie stuff, and it's pretty much resulted in millions of people NOT hearing his music, good or bad. But he still wants to compete, and in order to do so he has to work 10 times as hard to get the attentions of young music listeners who no matter what he does will consider him as some wierd 80s pop singer. He has every right to follow whatever course he wants to put himself back on the map, and the good news is, you can enjoy the ride because from all the reports his live performances still rule.

but prince is already rich...he doesnt need the money...he should be trying to leave an artistic contribution to society at 50

"sell out"? he's a pop star. that's the entire point of a pop star's career.

I've gotta say, I have no idea why Prince is doing this.

Yes. I agree that it does appear that he is selling out.

I'm not sure that the Prince of the early 1980s would have done television commercials, so perhaps he has changed.

I'd also like to mention that Prince is not supposed to be a pop star, he's supposed to be a musician. I always thought that Prince had sought to distance himself from these types, but perhaps I was wrong.

However, people can change.

He has acted in three movies that were centered around him. If he didn't want to be in the limelight, then he didn't do a good job at staying out
lol . Maybe the version of Prince in your mind isn't exactly the Prince that exists in reality.

where do you get that money is fueling his art. there is no record label telling prince what king of music to play. Prince has positioned himself to do the music he wants to do and negotiate the deals he wants to do, so what are you talking about? this is just a promotional method, has nothing to do with the creative process of the music, and besides the regular CD will be available to all us who are more into the conventional ways of getting music, which has not stopped, he came out with Musicology in 2004, 3121 last year, not Planet Earth this year. Some artists wait years in between to release music.

you know first you haters complain he lacks promotion and or his promotion sucks, then we he put himself out there he's a sellout. yall need to make up your minds.

When he was bitching and moaning about Warner Bros. in the mid-90's, he was talking about different avenues of distribution and promotion.

This is the kind of stuff he was talking about. What were you expecting?

What does this statement have to do with anything? Is he not a real musician because he is getting paid well for it? What does his financial earnings have to do with his musical talents?

i thought the real music by real musician was about musicians who play instruments and create real music rather than those who only use computers, beatmaking software and samples?

anyway, i still don't see anything wrong with negotiating a deal directly with a company that will help further promote your music, especially if you are the one who still owns the music and have control over the creative process. that's just me.

I agree. But he was talking about alternative forms of distribution and promotion as well, and this is the kind of thing he was talking about.

Indeed, what is a sellout actually? Personally, I don't believe in such a thing in the music business. Just because an artist chooses to promote his music by doing commercials he or she shouldn't be critize for it. I have never understand the hoopla over celebrities doing commercials. Isn't the idea to make people aware of your product? And what would be the best way to do that. If this is the way Prince (or anyone else for that matter), what is wrong with that? Did we write the music, played instruments, produced the music? Do we are own any of the music. I'm thinking no, Prince did. So, therefore, Prince should be allowed to do whatever he wants. If it turns out to be the wrong choice, he's the one who will suffer for it. If it works, then Prince will benefit. Are we affected one way or the other? I don't think so. I hope this makes sense to people, I have trouble put my words together.
