Every song screams "I'm frighteningly past my prime as a recording artist." [Edited 4/5/06 0:00am] No. That album would be New Power Soul.

Following his mindblowing performance on the Brit Awards,The Man has shown a new generation of younger fans over here in the UK what progressive music is all about. 3121 is a delicious mix of everything that is cool, with the certainty of knowing you are listening to the most influential world artist in the last twenty years. If you took a sample of his blood, you would find funk & soul in abundance, mixed with ice and a liberal dash of genius. Even if he isn't immortal, his music is. Elevation from the Prince to the King!

I'm not usually like this but, i've listened to 3121 5 times now and the only track I dislike is "Incense". The first 2 times I heard it I only liked "3121" and "Get on the Boat".

Why all the hating for The Dance? I love that song, especially that last two minutes or so when he's pleading. At the end he starts screaming - oh man, that is so good! (IT'S NOT FAIR! IT'S JUST NOT FAIR!!) When I want others to hear the CD from my truck (I'm so thoughtful), I play the title song. The Word, BLB, (the second song - I forgot the name), Get on The Boat - hell, I likem all!

I do not get all the complaints, 3121 is entirely another Prince masterpiece. The best music gets better the more you listen to it, 3121 meets this test.

3121 is the latest, greatest thing he's done....period!! I've kinda evolved from expecting the run like he had with everything up to Gra-filthy Bridge, where picking up the needle, hitting fast forward or skipping a track was nothing less than sacriledge....now I just listen and appreciate the best artist of our generation....and I love how he manages to release something every so often that helps me in recruiting more and more converts....MY KIDS are starting to dig on him now....its crazy :nuts:for me to think of it in terms of "DOing many BABYs" and a lot of "Pretending to be Married"....and now the fruit of these deeds is sitting there listening and jamming to Prince with me....Crazy world....!!! He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

I didn't bother with 'New Power Soul' at all but I did buy 'Musicology' only to find that two years later, I still can't tell you what's ON that album never mind which tracks I like. It's just completely ignorable, even when you own it,
'Cinammon Girl' being the worst song in the Prince catalogue, I think. I'll take another listen through it soon though. Meanwhile, here's a thought: If you hadn't been keeping in tocuh with Princeworld for a few years (count the heads and yes there are quite a few), and you hadn't actually heard about Prince becoming a JH and you bought 3121, as I did, and found it to be without booklet (so that you wouldn't see the album's dedication) then WHAT THE HELL DIFFERENCE WOULD IT MAKE TO THE MUSIC? Just a thought. CaptainJack said: hilton02895 said: No. That album would be New Power Soul.

Agreed! I was more than pleasantly surprised to hear that every track on '3121' is worth having. There are no moments when there's that embarassment of thinking 'It's..erm... almost good but not quite' (I'm thinking Paul McCartney albums here, people) Luckily I didn't see any nega on 'The Dance' until after I'd heard it a few times. I still don't see any nega on it and as for 'Te Amo Corazon'..I just wan't expecting to dig that one at all after seeing the Brits performance of it (which was Dull with a Death Ray) but it's really good. The thing is that this album sounds 'together' like evbery track was 'properly invited' and served when it came in. If you get what I'm sayin'.

Ok I've had the album for a while now and I think I've settled on an opinion on each of the tracks..
3121Totally pointless track...sounds like a bad mid 90s B side...not even a decent groove. I can see why a its loved by a certain type of fan; those who become sexually aroused anytime they hear anything remotely reminiscent of the 80s - whether its a linn drum, speeded up/slowed down rhythm guitar/vocals and of course the Camille Voice!! oh the joy!!!...bleh.....dullsville man, dullsville....really dumb way to start an album. 0 out of 5. Lolita It would have been a bit of fun if the lyrics and vocals weren't so God-awful..."Lolita you're sweeter but you'll never make a cheater outta me"..wtf? 2 out of 5. Te Amo.. Strangely this track has grown on me since I've had the album. Intelligent well produced track, nothing special but worth a listen. 3 out of 5. Balck Sweatconversely this track gets less interesting with each listen. Another one for the nostalgia freaks..falsetto, linn drum etc...Prince impersonating his younger self.. badly. 1 out of 5. Incense and Candles Hard to get past the auto-tune on this. Just a middle of the road Prince ballad otherwise. The kind of thing you swear you've heard a dozen times before and probably have. 2 out of 5. LoveThe best track on the album. Sounds contemporary without sounding like another desperate attempt to prove he's still in touch with "the kids". Prince in 2006 being Prince in 2006..a rare thing indeed. 4 out of 5. Satisfied Heard it all before...next! 1 out of 5. Fury I can't help agreeing with the majority opinion on this one...not anywhere near as good as the live versions. The production is a bit flat but its an OK song. 3 out of 5 The Word Just reaches the dizzying heights of mediocrity, though the chorus is OK. 2.5 out of 5. BLB Nice but dull. 2 out of 5. The Dance Actually not quite sure on this one. Its kind of interesting...I think... 2.5 out of 5 for the moment. Get on the Boat I see alot of people putting this track down as a second rate "Prettyman" or some such thing. I like it...good positive fun tune. 3.5 out of 5. Overall the album is a bit of a disappointment. Its better than Musicology but I cannot, no matter how i stretch my tiny brain, see where those who say its some of his best work are coming from...another planet presumably. I want everyone to read this and then think awhile before commenting.
I am a diehard fan. However, I've not always been a fan. I was into MJ for my first half of high school. What turned me toward Prince was ATWIAD. I got that on vinyl in 1985. I hadn't seen PR yet. What got me was the music. I was a DJ at the time and I had just about every 12 inch single popular at the time. I would listen to the inst. versions of the most popular cuts which lead me to explore the B-Sides of Prince's singles. Most of the stuff I liked weren't on an album but was b/w the single release. Most of these were sort of like inst. versions because they were extended and had extended bridges and breaks. Those are the sections I liked the most. To give it a little more perspective, to this day, my all time favorite is "La La La, He He He" of which I can still beatbox all 10 min, 52 seconds. What I am trying to say here is, there are those who listen to the music of Prince as background to their life or as somewhat of a sub plot. Then there are those like me that, while listening to this great talent, will zone out and immerse themselves into another world or daydream. To me the words get in the way of the true greatness of the performance of this little man going on 50 that can play just about all instruments, write, sing, and produce at the same time. We have to remember, we the great fans are not the majority of the music buying public. That being said, he has to be expected to delve into the mainstream pocketbook or he can't make money. He always gives us something special at the end of it all doesen't he? In this world where people don't pay attention to where they walk or what they do, how can we expect them to pay attention to a great artist such as Prince?? Think about that, then pull out all of your albums and listen with your eyes closed. Peace....Who's the freak now Michael???[i]

In listening to the album again, I've realized why I enjoy this album so much.
Even the weaker songs on it are improved by the context in which they're placed on the album. It really feels like a whole "album" and not just a random collection of songs like Rave. It's like, a song like Te Amo Corazon doesn't quite sound right as a single, but it's perfect with its place on 3121. [Edited 4/15/06 15:10pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I was thinking about that today, especially with Te Amo Corazon. I soooo wish Prince didn't release that song. That could stop a song that deserves to be released from getting released, especially with someone like Prince who has such a short track mind. Even with that, this album is still kicking my ass, even a month after hearing it. I really didn't think that could happen to me with a Prince album again. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I agree w/ everyone who says Te Amo is growing on them. I found myself singing "at first I didn't know the wooooords to sayyyyy"..."I just wanna thank ya... oh, each & everyday..." over & over & over the other day I skipped it when I first got the album. Maybe it's b/c it's just too short w/o it but I listen now & it's a nice little track
