said something really astute. It applies not only to teenagers but to a lot of people who were under 30 when the classic albums came out. I get this impression time and again -- it's as if Prince was there to make them feel hip and with it again.

Everything's so fresh & exciting when you're young, and we get so jaded as we get older. I wonder what I'd think of some of Prince's classic stuff if I just now heard it...

"Baby baby baby
What's it gonna be
Baby Baby baby
Is it him or is it me

Don't make me waste my time
Don't make me lose my mind
Baby...

I WANT YOU...YES I DO!!!"

Okay, the melody & performance are awsome, but I never thought those lyrics sucked when I was young. And they kinda do.

Those lyrics do not suck. They're minimalist. They're direct and straightforward.

He was still maturing as a lyricist, but he made his mark by being shockingly raw and honest. Direct to the point of embarrassment.

I wonder if there was any confusion about whom he was addressing, if anyone in the crowd thought he was singing about her, instead of Apollonia.

.

You could make that case, they do fit the story in Purple Rain. My point is that 20 years later those lyrics don't sound unique to me like they did at the time.

Same with

"I never meant to cause you any sorrow/ I never meant to cause you any pain"

Those lines are pretty conventional. Of course, he balanced the conventional with:

"Paint a perfect picture bring to life the vision of one's mind"
"Purple Rain, Purple Rain..."
"Animals strike curious poses..."

I also agree that I just don't like his newer lyrics as much as I used to, but again, I'm much older.

I'll grant you those lyrics are simple and that your enjoyment of them has diminished, but "The Beautiful Ones" and "Purple Rain" are as true and honest as they were 20 years ago when you were still an impressionable kid.

What bothers me is Prince's tendency to rely on old tricks, using worn tactics like double negatives and self-contradiction:

"I hate you."

"I don't wanna break your pride/
But I gotta."

It's old and tired and boring. Doesn't pack a punch.

He's an elder statesmen of music now, but he still lifts notes from his old playbook. Deep down he's still that brash and bratty little shit.

I guess even geniuses are creatures of habit that can't change their colors.

Related to this subject, Black Sweat is on Logo's list for Top 10 videos and we can vote. Here's the link:

http://www.logoonline.com...ting.jhtml

It was #6 but the week before it was #2. Let's keep it up there so that people can see the video and buy the CD and keep the sales up.

You may be right, because Purple Rain & The Beautiful Ones are still very powerful to me. I just wonder if it's the impression they made on me at an impressionable age, since I look at them now and see they're not particularly poetic. I'm not sure if they're more poetic than I Hate U, or Gold, though they seem like it when I listen to them. But then, I like a lot of the music I grew up with even if it sucks.

Maybe it's the music that packs the real power, maybe it's youth, maybe his lyrics suck worse now.

It may not be something I'm ever really able to judge, since I was there when it happened. Maybe only future generations will properly judge Prince's later material.

You can speculate all you want about what makes a song resonate for you. You have your favorites and the unique experiences that made them meaningful to you and that's your business.

As for posterity judging Prince's music, I could care less. If you choose to waive your own opinion and defer to some outside authority to confir the final word on what is or is not good music, that's just lack of self belief.

OK... I've finally decided to post my review for 3121. I bought the album last Friday (a week ago). I had been sick with the flu all week and finally I managed to drag myself outta bed and go to the wreckastow (to be precise, the biggest music store in Iceland, Skífan). To my surprise they were playing "Fury" inside the store and to top this the CD was on sale for 1799 kr. (25 $), which may not sound cheap but compared to the regular price of 2499 kr. (35$) it's quite a bargain biggrin .....
Anywho, here's my track-by track review of the CD:

3121: Camille (or if U prefer, Prince as a drunken alien razz ) meets the Paisley Park Power Trio.... now that's a great combination. I love the groove in this track and all the Princely weirdness in it which is precisely why I'm a Prince freak.

Lolita: This track was a bit too cheesy with those synths at the first listen, but it grew on me.... Now I dig the Cheddar-cheese that is Lolita.... and the tribute to The Time at the end is COOL cool

Te Amo Corazón: This is a nice little number. Not exactly a song that I loved when I heard it first, but it grew on me... The Clare Fisher arrangements and the organic feel of the track saves the track from being just "average".

Black Sweat: Why this track hasn't been more successful as a single is beyond me... This is basically Prince reclaiming the old Prince sound Pharrell stole from him.. Great track, though I'm not sure if my ears would handle this being played at a club because of the high-pitch synth.....

Incense and Candles: Ugghhh.... the track is OK I guess.... It's just that I really don't like that Cher-effect Prince uses for his voice in this track.... the rapping actually is surprisingly good...

Love: This song needs to be released as a single ASAP.... Love this song.

Satisfied: On The Couch pt. 2 ..... Nothing less, nothing more....

Fury: When I heard the studio version first I was disappointed since the SNL version was SO much more powerful.... However today I like the studio version just a little bit less than the SNL version... It somehow grew on me.....

The Word: I like the acoustic, relaxed feel to this track.... I'm not really bothered by the religious lyrics though I'm not a very religious person.... I don't feel any dogma is being forced upon me and I really don't hear how this track is specifically a JW track.... The message in this track can apply to everyone who believes what the Bible says IMO....

Beautiful, Loved and Blessed: This track is just slighty above average for me.... I do like the funky guitar at the end though

The Dance: This is SO much better than the NPGMC version..... and I don't get how a 47 year old guy can scream like that..... WOW!!! Gives me chills everytime.....

Get on the Boat: Very nice groove in this one..... I love the Latin influence throughout the track, especially at the very end of the track.....

If I compare this to other Prince albums I would rate this a 4/5.... If I compare it to new music in the Pop/Urban/R&B genres, I would give it 4.5/5 .... It's the best Prince album since The Gold Experience, possibly even since Lovesexy....

I would like to comment a bit about how the album's doing in the Icelandic charts.... at the moment it's at #16 on the official chart..... However I must mention I went to the record store Skífan yesterday and 3121 was at #5 on the in-store chart.... and while I was inside the store, browsing through new music and stuff, they played the whole album (or at least from track 5 to finish) cool ....

I just bought the CD last night and have played it through 3 or 4 times. My japanese girlfriend who hasn't really been aware of Prince at all before thinks it's really good and has now taken over the replayings...
Cool to see someone getting their first taste of the purple jizz!

1 question I gotta get straight..
I bought this in Tesco's in the UK and it has no booklet!
Is there a booklet with UK editions (digipak)?
And, if so,
Has anybody had this problem with Tesco's?

First and last time I buy music from a supermarket!

Yeah..I agree. I hear Prince, as SOME reviewers got, revisiting his back-catalgue and making what sounds to me like the same kind of album as 'Batman' was. Now I know that everybody seems to agree that Batman was the end of his run of great albums but it happens to be the album I've played most and this one has the same kind of atmosphere to me. I think the thing about Batman and this album are/were/will be the party factor is that you can play this loud in a room full of people and they all dig it. I noticed that even people who would diss Prince used to accept the tunes on Batman and I think this is what's happening with 3121.

So anyway, enough with the analysis.
This is staying on the stereo.
Big up the P.

3121 - Boring. Okay, if it was just the choruse repeated spuratically through out the song, I'd probably dig it better. The lyrics sound like and inside joke that I'm not privy to.

Lolita - In the words of two year old nephew "t'ash".

Te Amo Corazon - Indifferent. It sounds so Jehovah witness to be romantic but there is something about the latin arrangement that makes it okay.

Black Sweat - Wow.

Incense anmd Candles - Beautiful. Sensual. Tamar has a gorgeous voice and it is quite humorous to hear her and prince harmonize. I get the feeling she can wail.

Love - Reminds me of the simpleness of Lovesign.

Satisfied - Hmmm... It has a very strong similarity to adore lyrically. I find it honest and romantic.

Fury - Personal favorite so I wont comment.

The Word - I must appluade Prince. Where in the Rainbow Children, you couldn't help but feel like he was bashing his religious believes against your head, The Word is simple and plays on the idea of a greater being.

Beautiful, Blessed and Loved - the title describes the song

The Dance - I'm pissed. I like the original version so much more. Why? Because when Prince remade I hate you, he added emotion. This version of the dance is trite.

BEAUGARDE

When I 1st heard it, I hated every song. My 2nd listen, I loved every song. My favorite jams R Incense & Candles, The Word, Fury, Beautiful, Loved & Blessed, The Dance (although not as good as the original), Satisfied & 3121. By far superior to Musicology. On my way home from the Musicology concert I loved the CD but after that night, I didn't care for the Cd outside of Call My Name, On The Couch & What Do Want Me 2 Do. Prince has done it again! This time with his 1st Cd 2 debut at #1. (The next time U pull a card it better be an ace MFr or U can lay face down) Thanx P for showing Warners that U R THE Immaculate MUSIC Maverick & not their pride & joy Madonna (who's music is quite annoying these days) don't get me wrong I love the Material Girl but her Videos & singles have gone 2 shit

1.3121- SKIP, can't handle it... the lyrics are just annoying, haven't made it past a minute or so of it...

2. Lolita- bugs me. I was really curious about it too b/c y'all keep talking about it but neutral SKIP...

3. Te Amo Corazon- I skip it only b/c I've heard it so much before the album was out & I just wanna hear the new stuff & stuff I really love like:

4. Black Sweat- LOVE IT, repeat like a mutha...

5. Incense and Candles- It's cool, a little cheeky but I like it...

6. Love- Grows on me more & more - doesn't anyone think it's hilarious that he does an MJ-esque scream @ 4:08?? That shit cracks me up falloff

7. Satisfied- reminds me too much of On the Couch & Aretha's Dr. Feelgood (one of the lines is delivered just like hers). I do like it though, any song that says "I'm gonna sink this thing like a buried treasure" is cool w/ me tonk

8. Fury- I like that he kept it as simple as the SNL performance (though his vocal was better on the show), great track...

9. The Word- I don't wanna call this my fave on the album (Black Sweat has that sewn up) but I love this song! The delicate delivery punctuated by the acoustic guitar, the melody - I can see him going full on gospel w/ this one. I wish he'd found another metaphor for the chorus instead of the spider thing. It's so beautiful otherwise, the spider concept seems tacked on/just doesn't flow as well as the other lyrics shrug But very very nice song, I hope others like it too. Y'all know damn well if he was talking about fuckin' some chick you'd be all over it, GREAT song...

10. Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed- cute song...

11. The Dance- this is the biggest grower of the album for me. I really liked the other, emptier version & initially thought this one was too full. But I really dig it now, it's so fucking grand. I picture him in one of his special robes surrounded by a ring of fire, hanging from a trapeze w/ thunder & rain & lightning crashing down on him lol It's great, but I do giggle @ some of the screams, shit is comedy - over the top comedy thumbs up!

12. Get On The Boat- can't make it past 30 seconds of this one...

All in all it's okay. Black Sweat certainly had me AMPED, I thought he was gonna have deadly shit all over it but Te Amo should have clued me in. I like a lot of songs but I'm not wowed. Maybe I'll discover the songs I'm skipping later & feel more satisfied. Solid purchase but Prince is a fucking genius & this is him coasting...

REVISED THOUGHTS:

Still don't like 3121, don't know what the hell y'all are thinking lol I can make it to the end now but I still skip past it (especially that last "wall of Berlin" line - it takes me back to the "interferons" line of Xeno live lol ). This'll be one I'll be counting the minutes during when he performs it live disbelief

Don't get the hype over Lolita, he's officially coasting on this one - why do y'all like it so much? He did this in his sleep, I'm convinced hmm

LOVING Incense & Candles, this is sexy. All his little yelps & shit, he got me w/ this one tonk

I simply cannot fucking wait to hear Love live!!! headbang

Get on the Boat is cool after all, they kinda kill it @ the end. Slightly corny but still makes you wanna dancing jig

Everything else I feel the same about, I just felt the need to confess some changes of heart razz

Musicology is the saddest album in Prince's catalogue.

Every song screams "I'm frighteningly past my prime as a recording artist."
