@amyhr - I expected 3121 to suck... So, I guess that's why I like it so much.

I picked up 2 copies of 3121 today. I can finally saw without a doubt, I LOVE IT! After having heard the leak, the CD makes an already great album even better. Not a bad song on it. It's been so long that I have truly loved a Prince CD like this. Words cant describe how happy I am with it.

Thanks to everyone with such crappy things to say about this record... I think it's made the initial enjoyment of it that much sweeter. This is the first time I can recall ever hearing a Prince record that was just effortless... Besides, perhaps, PR. And it is just getting sweeter!!

I've only just started listening to Prince since a little after Musicology came out. But I must say this is def. a great album. All the songs are great and fit into place. This day was even more enjoyable when my dad bought me Parade, For You, and Diamonds & Pearls aswell biggrin
chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

If someone can listen to 3121 and "dismiss Prince as a whole", they don't have ears...wink

I'm listenin' 2 the title track again, and now I realize why I'm so disappointed about the whole album.

3121 was announced to be Prince's (commercial) comeback. I was freakin excited! I hated the time when it used 2 be:
- What kind of music do you listen 2?
- U know Prince & stuff...
- Who?
4 real, in my generation in Austria, no exception.
Some of my friends only knew the albums Rave & Emancipation, and of course they did'nt like it. If that was all I knew of Prince I wouldn't like it either. They are cool pieces if you have the whole puzzle, if u know what I mean...(That's when I started handing out 'best of' compilations to my friends.... "I'm spreading the word" smile)
So I was kind of hoping to get anything BUT this kind of sound on his comeback-album. I feel like 3121 won't make it easier for me to convince people that Prince is not just that.

What I'm trying to say is that if 3121 would have been released quietly without any promotion, I probably would've loved it. But now I'm all worried about people dismissing Prince as a whole.

I hope I'm wrong about everything and 3121 will be a big success and Black Sweat a big club banger.

P.S.: I know y'all couldn't care less about what I'm saying, but since English is not my mother tongue it's hard for me to (shortly) point out what I'm trying 2 say smile)

Oh man after all that waiting I don't know where to start confused

Hmm well i'm not gonna say it is a bad album.

I will say i'm dissappointed though and not because I don't think its decent but really at this point that is it.

Its not really fair to judge an album after listening to it once and I am pretty sure that is true but from first impressions thats what I got.

I think it is an album that shows what we all know and that is Prince whatever band he puts together or keeps can play.

I like the bass elements whether its drum machines, or bass guitars or whatever live drums may be found but as good as I think the instrumentation is the thing that sorta dissappoints me about the record is i don't think I really hear anything standout.

I will say Te Amo Corazon has grown on me and I love it now.

I also love Black Sweat and I think I like BLB way more than I thought I would but as far as the songs I hadn't heard before I think Satisfied is sorta nice and Get on the Boat is sorta funky at the end but not really anything that blows me away.

I'm not saying this cause I wanna be negative but because its just how i'm feeling right now. I mean its a decent nice album I suppose and maybe i'll like it more if I keep listening but that super dissappoints me because I wanted to like it more right away than I do right now.

I also can understand how people are dissappointed in Fury on the album.

The album cut is sorta ruined by over expectations after you see the blazing live performances.

I'm a hardcore Prince fan right now, even though I didn't start out that way so i'm even dissappointed in myself about feeling like this right now.

I won't boot it out of my cd player or never listen to it again or nothing but right now I like musicology better and as mellow as I think it is I thought i'd never say that.

Anyhow maybe i'll change the way I feel later with more listens but whatever the case as someone stated i'm glad the man is still recording and i'm glad to have another Prince album to add to my collection so i'll be thankful for that and keep listening to it and see what happens neutral .

Also does it sound to anyone else like he's trying real hard to sing over the top of the music? confused

That's no problem at all. I speak from experience. Nothing worst than making youself like an album and then a few months later you realize it really wasn't all that. But when an album FINALLY grabs you, oh man it's like the heavens parting. That's fun when it happens and that might happen for you with this. biggrin

But to say that this album is on the level of Rave or Musicology is a little kneejerk in my humble opinion...3121 is flat-out a better album; I would advise everyone to listen to the album on its own terms...

Translation: it's a decent album if you ignore that Prince is (*) capable of much better.

(*) Hmmm, perhaps "was" would be a better choice of words, considering he hasn't released anything in post-1995 that I'd consider better than average, and most of it actually falls in the category "I'll never listen to this again".

The only reason so many people here like 3121 now is because it's "fresh" and "new". The same thing happened back when Rave came out, Musicology, etc. Yet ask the same people six months later and they'll rank 3121 along all those other albums that they got tired of pretty fast. I'm just ahead of the curve -- those that were around in 1999 will remember me being the lone voice pointing out that Rave was gonna bomb and that the infamous "positive" Uptown preview of that album actually tried really hard to avoid admitting it was yet another major disappointment (something Uptown admitted months later).

Of course so much of this album sounds familiar, for the past couple of years Prince seems to be incapable of doing anything beyond recycling his own music, plenty of times in an attempt to have something similar to an old but now off-limits tune (because of "bad words"). And then the tour starts and before you know it all that "new" music gets ditched and setlists once again consist of 80+% old material -- shows you how much faith Prince has in his new music.

Anyone who claims that current Prince is anywhere near classic Prince is blind and deaf, all you need to do is take a dvd of a 1980s gig and compare it to a recent one: it's almost like they're different artists. Cue usual "growth/getting older" excuse, whereas I'll point out that Johnny Cash made some of his best work at the end of his career.

If 3121 rocks your world, fine -- but don't pretend that it is worthy of access to the list of "great Prince albums". This is yet another one from the bland manufacturing line, yet another "will this do" effort, yet another utterly misguided attempt at making a return to the charts. Prince can do this in his sleep, and 3121 actually sounds like he recorded it in his sleep.

I'm always surprised when I glimpse at tracklists for recent Prince albums and can't even imagine what most of the songs sound like, whereas I know most of his 1980s output by heart.

Instead of spending so much time and energy on these mediocre efforts, Prince should concentrate on what's in his vault. Seriously, what's the point of releasing Lolita, which is Time-lite at best, when great songs like I Wonder, Possessed, Rebirth Of The Flesh, Large Room With No Light, All My Dreams, Moonbeam Levels,... are gathering dust in a tape vault. And how about all those extended versions from 12 inches that remain unreleased on CD? Or all those full-length versions of released tracks (Computer Blue for instance)?
[Edited 3/21/06 7:05am]

Hardcore Gimme Prince the Pop Wonder type of review -- more than a few professional and fan reviews are constructed from this Xpectation of Prince semi-reinventing something yearly till the end of his career. And of course the obligatory reference to Johnny Cash, probably the only person who kept a degree of cool and relevance over several decades but NOT in the circus that is pop music. That, for me, is very telling, because people can't find another example. The closest in pop is Madonna, and she's (at best) more of a master collaborator/driving force than a total performer/composer like Prince. Which is to say that the standard applied to Prince, given his long career, is not only unique but a sign into himself. Because the fact that some people still have that "pop wonder" Xpectation for Prince means he has given them reasons to hope over the years, no matter how small and far in between those reasons have been.

The album is on again, off again, middling and arrogant, without being great. Prince talks a game about real music, but does bunches of electronic sounds and synth, the complete opposite of what he usually preaches. He never really breaks out and scorches on this.

I'm really digging the album. The first four tracks are perfect IMHO. 5 and 6 kinda lose the momentum for me but it picks up until the end. It's not groundbreaking or classic Prince, but its a very solid listen that has more fire, humor and musicianship than anything Prince has released in the last few years(w/ the exception of TRC). Some will like it, some are going to pan it, regardless its a nice fun record that makes me feel good about Prince's music again.

THIS ALBUM IS SO KICK ASS!!!!!

I love how the album OPENS ...WITH ALL THOSE WEIRD NOISES.

I love that each song has someplace where there's a unique vocal delivery.

I love the GEETAR!

I love the sounds and screams that we've grown to love over the years -- he brought them back to us.

I love the SENSUALITY!

I love the energy.

I even love the raps
eek lol (on incense & candles and love)

I love 3121, Lolita, Black Sweat, Incense and Candles, Love, *Satisfied*, and Fury.

I love that he wrote Lolita for Beyonce wink "Long ago, we would have been the sh** like Frank and Ava" She must have really sprung him out after the Grammys. No need trying to dissuade. This song is about Mise Bey.

Anyway, this is a favorite album. It kicks Musiclogy's ass and Rainbow Children's ass.

I have nothing bad to say about it. Which is rare. It totally rocks and I'm so happy I could cry.

I really dig this album! I guess I am not the best critic because I always dig Prince's stuff. But, I would have to say that this is a GREAT cd. I would give this one a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. The only reason I say that is, I wish there were a few more tracks or I wish that the songs would bleed a bit more. 3121 leaves me wanting more.

I've seen a lot of negative reviews on the org regarding Incense and Candles, I think the song is very catchy. I dig it. Also, when I first heard Te Amo on the radio and saw the video, I was not that in to it. But after hearing it on the cd, I am a big fan of this song. Great stuff.

I would like to see 3121 released as the next single. I think the youth of today needs more Funk in their ears.
