I enjoyed the entire album the first time through.

For those of you who somehow felt let down, or were disappointed, let me give you a method which has never failed me that I can remember. I approach every new CD, movie, tv show, book, whatever the same way: I expect it to suck, and I only hope to derive some form of entertinemnt from it. With this method, I very, very rarely feel as though I've been ripped off, and almost never feel any tinge of disappointment. In fact, using this method I've highly enjoyed media which other 'hardcore' fans of the genre have constently been at war against (a couple of examples, star wars 1 - 3, new power soul).

I don't have it yet, but I'm listening to it on MSN Music - I like it. I didn't think that MSN Music would let me listen to the whole thing; I thought I'd get little thirty-second clips. ^_^

@amyhr - I expected 3121 to suck... So, I guess that's why I like it so much.

Ive probably said this in another thread before but being a Prince fans has its ups and downs - and hearing all the mixed reviews did make me worry a bit - but as soon as I heard the title track I just knew he'd done it for me. It normally takes me a few listens with ANY artists album, but I was hooked after the first listen which is unusual for Prince!
I know his style isn't what it used to be - I must admit I really really miss his deep down and dirty side - I cant think too much about the lyrics to some of the songs on here as it would totally ruin my idea of him...
So the moment I start feeling this then its time to dig out some of the rawer albums from the past ie SOTT, Crystal ball etc I mean, the guys given us over 30 albums to pick from so criticising 3121 isnt really fair huh? Look at the criticism hes had over the years - his albums were still successful yeah??
To sum it up - the guys nearly 50, I know he aint running around in hotpants and rollerblades like Madonna (Hes been there - done that) - but I think this album reflects every single musical influence he has had in his career and I think he gives a huge 'biggup' to the styles of today. This albums suits him perfectly..
You cant say to me that a club wouldnt go wild if they heard 3121 (to name but a few off this album)banging on the dance floor...theyd love it! excited
This album gets a 4/5 from me dancing jig

I've only heard the first half, but so far I think it's far better than Musicology.

3121--Cool, as others said kind of hints at a much cooler album than the actual 3121 is!

Lolita--Catchy, fun, a bit goofy. Some people will love it, some will never get past this to hear the rest of the record.

Te Amo Corazon--OK. I'd never heard it, and I'm not blown away, but it's okay and fits in with the flow of the album.

Black Sweat--Nice, funky, but that keyboard hurts my ears! I must be getting old--or Pince is and can't hear that well.

Incense & Candles--The coolest & dorkiest track on the (1st half of the) record. If I'd never heard Cher's Believe, I'd love it. If the Simpsons hadn't used that effect for Ralph on Drop the Bomb, I'd love it. It's a really well crafted song, though, and I liked it anyway.

Love--I was surprised by the hook on this song, it snuck up on me. I think it could have been slightly re-arranged and made more effective, but I like this song okay.

Satisfied--yes, similar to On The Couch. It suffers from 28 years of Prince music. If this was 1982, it might be a classic.

Fury--I like the album version. I've always appreciated the contrast between live & nasty and recorded & clean. I like the toned down and perfected quality of this. It makes the song work better as a song (on the radio, if that were possible anymore) while the SNL version worked better as a hot live number, just as they should.

So far, it's a very listenable record, even more than Musicology. The songs seem more well crafted. The peaks don't quite match TRC, though.

I'm back at work, so I have to wait to hear the rest!

Listening now, unfortunately it's at work, too much noise and hard to hear. But I'm hopeful.

I'm on Love right now, and I like the vibe of the album. Prince seems more comfortable, more settled in, sure of himself. I can hear the Rainbow Children sound all over the place, and it's easier on the ears here.

Whole album is off the charts!! I love it. I read a pretty good review here yesterday. This individual gave Incense and Candles a 7/10. Being a Prince fan, I've learned more than anybody that, different people have different taste. The first time I heard the song I loved it. I'm a Slow groove R&B type of person, so it had me right away. The Word is probably my least favorite song, but I can still sit and enjoy it anyhow.

Excellent work, yet again Prince!! Keep elevating yourself to that unreachable status. And I'ma keep dancing!

FURY!!

I preordered my copy and I will have it Thursday, maybe tomorrow, at least I hope it's tomorrow.

I've heard 4 songs and I like Black Sweat the best, but I'm sure I'll like the others, except I don't dig the Latin sound of Te Amo Corazon too much- it's a good song, I'm just a sucker for the funk.

I love this album it's on repeat. My friends who arn't Prince fans even love it and brought it today.

3121 - That just makes your head bounce period.

Lolita - Fun Pop song i love it it's so catchy

TAC - Goes perfect with the Lolita lead and I love the song now.

Black Sweat - Prince's Club bangger the people at the club i go to Love this song.

Incense and Candles - I truly don't know why people hate this song I love it maybe because I'm 22, but yeah thanx prince for the Get your freak on track whew thats been missed.

Love - Is bananas the ending with the dance breakdown is a killer

Satisfied - Nice Bluesy track it puts me at ease when I hear it.

Fury - I dig this track I love it both Studio and Live

The Word - Is a good r&b track aswell makes you think about things.

BLAB - Tamat is amazing seen her live and she can really sing I hope she does good

The Dance - Outstanding track the instrumentation is just beauitful and The Beautiful Ones Scream at the end sent tingles down my spine.

Get On The Boat - James brown ender which is becoming A prince trend but I love this one just as much as I loved Pretty Man.

For the ones listening on comp speakers plug your head fones in and turn that shit up it's a whole nother experience.

Greetings,

as for the CD 3121.....
what a great opening, goodness me, turn it up, 3121 rocks! Lolita is silly but okay and better than the last track Get on the Boat, each time he uses horns he sounds like James Brown.
I liked the CD a lot except for about 4-5 songs. This is what he should have given us after he split with warner brothers. At times he sounds silly talking about sex considering that he is now in his late 40s, but alas, he is still Prince.
Of course there are 3 hits on the CD: Te Amo Corazon, Black Sweat, Fury and Beautiful,Loved And Blessed. I liked his version of 'Fury' on SNL better than here on the CD. I'm still waiting for him to funk it out with a funky CD from beginning to end.
Nice to see that after all of these years, we Prince fans are still loyal to the max! Thank goodness for the Internet and websites like this one.

Check me out at www.lloydescott.com if you want 2.
Peace to you all, and always believe in the Lord, He is the way!

The Good:

3121, Black Sweat, The Word, Beautiful Loved and Blessed, Incense and Candles, Fury, Love

The Get off the Groove and Stop rehashing past melodies Prince:

Satisfied.....how many of these do we need before we can say 'I get it'? Buy the Ray soundtrack instead.

The Downright Crap:

The Dance ....wants to work but just doesn't and it rehashes past prince melodies..yuck-a-doodle-do.

Lolita....yawn ...chorus anyone? The beat is cool but the rehashed synth melodies stuff this one....and yet the sucker might hook you....but only if you're a Prince fan....maybe...

The Saved:

Get on the Boat '...if only he hadn't rehashed Pretty Man in the first half this would be flippin awesome'...but those who haven't heard Pretty Man are in for a treat...the funk rhythm, quasi rock bridge, jazz latin combo is da bomb...

TAC....works well in the album and is pleasant enough...but a lacks some spark...

The Biggest Hit Potential : Incence and Candles....ya'll know its true..

Overall: Eight decent tracks means this has enough on it and enough experimentation that I don't feel embarassed putting it in with my cd collection including: Sign of THe Times, Songs in the Key of Life, Exile on Mainstreet, Abbey Road etc but it ain't as good as those albums. Musicology and the Rainbow Children are hidden away where prying eyes can't witness my weakness for Prince....

You are so right. My expectations always color my appreciation of art. When it's built up as great (Lost in Translation) I am almost always disappointed. If it's "terrible" (The Phantom Menace) I tend to like it.

With Prince I can only create my own expectations because peoples' opinions vary so wildly.

I'm listenin' 2 the title track again, and now I realize why I'm so disappointed about the whole album.

3121 was announced to be Prince's (commercial) comeback. I was freakin excited! I hated the time when it used 2 be:
- What kind of music do you listen 2?
- U know Prince & stuff...
- Who?
4 real, in my generation in Austria, no exception.
Some of my friends only knew the albums Rave & Emancipation, and of course they did'nt like it. If that was all I knew of Prince I wouldn't like it either. They are cool pieces if you have the whole puzzle, if u know what I mean...(That's when I started handing out 'best of' compilations to my friends.... "I'm spreading the word" smile)
So I was kind of hoping to get anything BUT this kind of sound on his comeback-album. I feel like 3121 won't make it easier for me to convince people that Prince is not just that.

What I'm trying to say is that if 3121 would have been released quietly without any promotion, I probably would've loved it. But now I'm all worried about people dismissing Prince as a whole.

I hope I'm wrong about everything and 3121 will be a big success and Black Sweat a big club banger.

P.S.: I know y'all couldn't care less about what I'm saying, but since English is not my mother tongue it's hard for me to (shortly) point out what I'm trying 2 say smile)
