Moving to site discussion

Why's that exactly? Isn't the "site discussion" forum for discussion about THIS site? Prince.org? Is site discussion now supposed to be about discussion of ALL sites? Even ones that aren't actually "sites"?

nuts

Like a lot of things on this site it makes no fucking sense.

I'm sorry to see this thread relegated to the backwaters of prince.org site discussion, but I have a suggestion for all of you experienced orgers from "way back when." I am not a "newbie" to Prince even though I am a "newbie" to prince.org. This thread was one of the most interesting in recent history, considering the amount of "what if Prince.." and "OMG Prince is my next hubby" threads which currently proliferate here. My own posts about listening to some bootlegs for the first time have been soundly rejected as badly written or not well thought out, among other criticisms... LOL

My suggestion for those of you who have had long experience and knowledge of Prince, his concerts, his music (official or non-official) is this: why don't some of you start posting some knowledgeable and intelligient threads about some of these subjects in order that a real conversation can get started and so that many of us who don't share this knowledge could learn from all of you and ask (hopefully) some intelligient questions and really join into the conversations? I miss real threads on here about Prince's music...as well as others. We need your music knowledge, wit, and wisdom. Won't some of you please post some serious threads to educate the younger ones (and those of us late to the internet world)?

Thanks for any thoughtful responses or considerations. wink

Wondered where this fucking thread went, LOL.

I think, from time to time, people do bring up threads like this, but a lot of people who have this kind of information doesn't bring it up cuz we've discussed it so many times before. If someone were to start a thread about some interesting information, its a toss up if anyone really responds anyway! I always wondered why more people didn't contribute to the era and album threads posted by OldFriends4Sale and Swa as those were good platforms with which to discuss a lot of cool stuff.

I also like the current thread about info tidbits that don't qualify for their own thread.

I totally agree with all of your points. Even someone like me recklessly posts threads about boots they haven't listened to all the way through or done research on--even though I have been a longtime fan and I am old enough to know better. I understand why experienced orgers get frustrated with the quality of the posts on this site currently because they have discussed so many of these topics ad nauseum. But, many people are either new to Prince or even longtime fans that were not in on the whole internet thing until recently...like me--late to the game.

So, you have a whole bunch of people on here who are ignorant. But some people like OldFriends4Sale and Swa do post interesting threads and there isn't much discussion on them, although I have read them and posted on them. I just hope folks like these don't become too discouraged because if the current trend of music postings continues, I will lose interest. I have decided to up my own game and only post more prepared and well-thought out threads. The criticism of my Work It 2.0 thread was well founded! razz lol

I always wondered too. However, I always operated in amp on the basis that:

1. Half the guys here appear to be complete nutters

2. Perhaps, it's an in-joke

3. Ask a question at your peril - you could be here for days trying to argue your way back out again.

Ummm... I really wish I remembered the stripper's screen name. I know her real name was Patricia and she often had pics posted on her AOL site or whatever. And then the guy who became her boyfriend. Moved up to MN to live with her and then got booted/banned from PP shortly after, LOL.

Patricia was Emancipation4U though I think she may had used another name at some point, as well. I actually thought of her last year for some reason and found an outdated website she'd set up about her female professional wrestling career. I thought the guy who moved to MN to be with her was called JoeyCoco.

I'm having a good time reading the memories on this thread. biggrin I didn't realize how many of the posters here are the same folks I used to read on a.m.p.! I never really posted or interacted on a.m.p. - I was too afraid to! lol

Edit: here's Patricia's website. http://emancipation4u.tripod.com/

The intro screen reminded me that I think her other name for awhile on amp was Violet or Violettheorgangrider, something like that.

Been there, done that. What you're forgetting is the Org has been here for 10 years or so, and before that plenty of us were already discussing things online for years already (PPML, amp, ...).

The Org was OK in the beginning, but then it just got killed when all those famz moved here after Prince closed down his website/forum and infested this place with illegible nonsense. Ben & Kev should have applied the lessons from SlashDot and Reddit etc and worked with things like karma points, besides applying a vicious thread policy. Instead, far too much of this place is a "go crazy" playfield where worthwhile threads get buried after a day by "ain't Prince's butt fantastic" type of bullcrap.

And if there is a worthwhile thread, you can bet on it being invaded by ignoramuses demanding you retype everything you've ever posted online because they can't be arsed to use Google.

Look at the top, there's a link to the Principedia. And there is virtually NOTHING there. Why? Because the old garde can't be arsed to retype everything they've learned, and the others can't be bothered to help out either.

Now imagine how different things would be if this site wasn't using ancient forum-technology, but instead was more like a StackExchange site, where you'd earn points for asking and/or answering questions.

Wanna know where it went wrong? Back in the mid/late 1990s, when Prince alienated technically savvy people by suing websites for the first time. Who in their right mind would invest time and effort into running such a place and keeping it fresh when you could get threatened at the drop of a hat? Look at HQ: survived numerous threats, stayed annoyingly positive -- and then just one day the guy running it had enough, and a treasure trove of information just vanished.

Wanna know why the online Prince community sucks? Just take a look at what Prince has done.

Bart is absolutely correct. And, for a change, not being nasty. His point isn't that he doesn't have an idea. His point is "Why bother?" Prince deserves the online presence he's got because he's done everything in his power (and even tried a few things beyond it) to systematically dismantle it until all that's left are jaded fans who don't feel like regurgitating the information they've absorbed over the years, let alone discussed ad nauseum in the 15+ that they've been doing this online, and the brain stems that are repeatedly starting "POST A PIC OF PRINCE'S LEFT KNEE CAP!" bullshit or the syco-fams who got on board with Musicology or 3121 who can't suffer one critical word being uttered against Prince because they weren't there to witness exactly he how he treated his formerly MASSIVE online fanbase when they were still in the 5th grade and had never heard of him.

No I am not missing the point. Different levels of fans. I understand that. alt.music.prince was not a place everyone knew how to access. And prior to that their were BBS sites around the country (Prodigy was a BBS before INternet got real popular - late 80's).

I hung out at HQ a lot. Other sites are a bit more clickish and just to "fanish" for me.

I like this site because of the people here who can be objective.

But what I don't like is the negativty and the lets just complain and not do anything. Anyone can do that.

I agree this site could use a serious redesign and some of the things Bart proposes are good ideas. But as he leaned towards, maybe people like Ben are not motivated to fix up the site knowing that Prince will threaten him at any moment.

But alt.music.prince was also around when Prince was hot. Maybe we just need to face it that we are all old and it's down hill from here as far as Prince. LOL

This isn't really a topic up for debate. Prince.org is owned by a certain someone and it follows his certain vision. If he were compelled to change the site, he would. That does not, however, mean people should not criticize or offer help and ideas - this has gone on for years, it ain't a new thing that Ben has been totally hands off P.org. Why do you think you see so many mods listed and yet we really only have 3 that you see often anymore? (Luv4u, Mach, Mars23).

There's plenty of ways to discourage people from being at each other's throats and there's tons of reasons WHY it should be implemented, but the plain reason is that it's not going to happen. Ever.
