Hey, remember that Mani chick from AMP? She married a rock star.

and begged me for a copy of Deposition lol

lol And she later ends up with the combination to The Vault.

For reference, AMP began in 1995 I believe. That was the first time I'd posted there. At the time, it was little more than spare discussions about bootlegs (similar to a Goldmine magazine advert, lol) and some meager discussion about Gold Experience's impending release. It was not until Prince publically embraced the internet (with Emancipation) that his fanbase really took notice of those little nooks and crannies people had been running all along.

I did not get into the PML until it was PPML and already in digest form. I wanna say this was 1996 or 1997.

New Power Network was definitely started around the same time as PML and AMP, though. Not sure about before, or even how much longer before, it would've been made. Not enough of a difference to matter!

This is true. Ernest requested the mods delete his account. He has moved on to the judgmental prince fan pasture in the sky.

Yep. I didn't fuck with binaries because I was a little young and didn't have the patience to deal with it. That and I had a very good friend I'd met in the Paisley Park room who would dub tapes for me. (Now there's a memory - Hearing songs like "Lisa" for the first time.)

I'm pretty sure the PML came first - I read about it on AOL's message boards. If someone had those archived, it would be an awesome read.

AMP was a fun place, it truly felt underground - you knew Prince's goons weren't going to come get you! Hell, I ran a bootleg FTP site there for a few years. Seems quaint now!

Not sure if it's been done, but a Prince cyber-history would be a cool read.

Hmm, apparently this site still has the PPML stuff... any chance at fixing this up?

I remember Rudedog from amp. Cool dude.

And T. That dude was weird. He was always railing on Prince, and talking about the secret stuff he had that no one would ever get to hear. And then he'd threaten to commit suicide.

amp is also where I heard the masterpiece that is "Hey Hannigan". Greatest song EVER.

Memories - got any?

Damn, what's the name of the dude that always had his "latest three movies seen" in his sig, who was "responsible" for hooking up Prince and Larry Graham?

They used to be on the org (since the org sprung out of the ppml) but they stopped working once this new forum design was launched. I still got just about all of them on a HD somewhere. Along with a ton of other old stuff, like The Prince Family and Uptown News and the L4OA news messages from Prince etc ("Lendy & Wisa" etc).

Not sure if it's been done, but a Prince cyber-history would be a cool read.

Uptown had one in one of their mags, but it was far from good. Written by Eric Benchimol, IIRC, who tended to sanatise things. He was the dude who ran weekly posts on amp and the PPML where he listed the chart success of Prince singles and albums etc, which got pretty pathetic after a while.

There was also "The Dawn" by Warren something (forgot his name), which was basically this huge collection of articles and reviews about Prince. Ben & Kev got the archives way back when and promised to put them up here, but it never happened. I still got a ton of those things on a HD somewhere.

There was the Prince Family newsletter, but Diana only went online rather late, IIRC, and then she got harrassed by the L4OA minions and she finally called it quits.

There was Sevenmag.

There was the Uptown news page, initially maintained by Pierre Igot on some impossible to remember address which was his free webspace at the university he went to (IIRC). Then he got a simpler URL, and then this became emale.com and he joined the dark side and started attacking people anonymously.

The sad thing is that the PPML and amp had far higher quality than places like the Org, mainly because things weren't that easy. You had to have some skills to join in. I still think the Org would have been far far better if Ben & Kev had implemented ideas from websites like Reddit and SlashDot; the way it is set up now just drives away the experts, because why the hell would you do any effort when some dumbasses will bury your thread by starting a bunch of lame-ass threads?

There are pearls of info buried in the archives of the org (and amp and the ppml etc), but chances are they'll remain buried. I hope someone has a backup of HQ, for instance, and perhaps one day Prince will inspire people enough to start digging out those pearls and collect them and organise them. If I'd win the lotto I'd pay someone to dig up every thread Boris Fishpaw (sp?) was on and pick out the juicy info and put it in a Wiki. Same for a bunch of other regulars here.

No, Google doesn't show posts that were marked "do not archive". Which T did -- so usually the only time you see T's posts is when they're quoted. But I bet there are archives of amp that have all those posts. I'm pretty sure I've got a couple of old HDs where there's a couple of years of amp in files that were used by Agent (usenet software).

Totally agree. The biggest problem with a knowledge base on the internet is hassle to preserve it.

Obviously later than all this stuff, but if we're cataloguing ideas for a Prince cyberhistory, then TRH deserves a mention. I met so many cool folks there. And since it required a certain amount of boots to even make a request for access, you knew that everyone there was a pretty dedicated fan.

I visted the PML in 1993 using my aunt's CompuServe internet account. Here's some basic history from our very own Org: http://prince.org/wiki/Pr...iling_List

(I cant understand what's wrong with the above link but you can access it by clicking on PRINCEPEDIA then Category|Fansites, then Prince .org)

Oh man, the Victor Wooten guy! LOL. It's been sooooo long since I ever thought about him. Bilal was also big with the Victor Wooten fan(s). And also the Upper Room w/ Joe Kelly!?

Ummm... I really wish I remembered the stripper's screen name. I know her real name was Patricia and she often had pics posted on her AOL site or whatever. And then the guy who became her boyfriend. Moved up to MN to live with her and then got booted/banned from PP shortly after, LOL.

There was a dude who was really good pals with Ernest who used to get in disputes with him sometimes, too. The guy actually wrote posts a lot like robinhood's posts. All i can remember is what he looks like (there was an AMP Photo Thread/Site too). (Edit: Remembered him - RDHull)

I've told the story before, but prior to Tim's tapes getting stolen for the creation of the Deposition set by Thunderball/Moonraker, he took a request by me for something to prove he had legit sources for things and he wasn't full of shit. I requested the rehearsal version of Electric Intercourse to be cleaned up to sound like it would fit alongside the live stuff on the Purple Rain album. He did a remarkable job turning it into a more professional sounding performance and its what usually circulates on boots nowadays anywho.

There were lots of posts by groups of fans getting together. Groups like New Power New York, LoveSexy DC, etc. I never went to any of the LS DC gatherings cuz it was a little too nerdy feeling to me, but I hear they had tons of fun.

I also had mentioned before when the developers for the Crystal Ball booklet website first started it and the tracklist was not released, it had been found (aka the info was leaked) and you could mouseover the crystal ball and it displayed song titles of songs not actually on the set but that the devs wished would be on there and it included "Our Destiny", "Roadhouse Garden", "Wonderful Ass", and "All Day, All Night". Can't help but think he was inspired by that!

I remember when the hype for Newpower Soul began and snippets of tracks were debuted on the site. Rudedog went crazy for the demo version of "Sadomasochistic Groove" and was quite disappointed with how it came out. Still waiting for "Funk Radio"!

"Is Prince in the movie Fargo?" began on AMP.

For those who don't know "Hey Hannigan" story, it was passed off as being a classic Prince outtake. The song was absolutely not Prince and just a simple beat with a guy saying "Hey. Hey Hannigan." with some vocal effects on. The hilarity of it was that 1) some people believed it was Prince and 2) some people were outrageously intent on VERY EMPHATICALLY INSISTING IT WAS NOT PRINCE YOU GUYS WHAT THE FUCK, etc. lol.

Richard Dower/Liberation. What a stir. I don't think I've ever been witness to someone more hated on the internet than Lib. I'm still not sure how he came into possession of the outtakes he had, but he was involved in some REALLY cryptic shit with the bootleg labels and those labels were not always the most friendly people.
