Well, I may be joining a bandwagon regarding vegetarianism, but it SURE as hell ain't Prince's.

I've always had moral issues with various types of meat (and dairy products, for that matter). Of course, I love me a nice steak from time to time, and I'll never give up cheese, even though I might be eating it and realize what it is and have to stop eating it until I forget again. wink

Ground beef makes me especially ill lately - just the sight of it. Ick.

And how did I ever eat hot dogs and Slim Jims?

Utopia7, i absolutely agree with you though that people on there put on ridiculous airs in order to be "liked" by the Moderators, and it makes me nauseous.

you've got to be kidding me

people aren't really 'playing vegetarian' over there, are they?

if so many people are vegie, then why the hell were none of them EVER buying the vegie-burgers at the celebrations?

rolleyes

I hopped on the vegie-wave...but it was about 15 years ago, and 'cos of The Smiths...NOT Prince... lol

yeh i done been one awhile too...my decision wasn't prince-based either...it happened when i was still fairly young and fell in with 'the wrong crowd...' wink

i don't really know where the 'vegetarian bandwagon' thread is tho..hmm...guess i'll look again...

saw one about 'how do you like your steak?' and someone is apparently pretty offended by comments on that one...

i thought the comments were funny tho personally and i said so..there's a person over there that definitely didn't but you know...whatever kills your cow...

I could never be vegetarian. I'm constantly eatting meat, I crave it. I feel really bad about it actually but I dislike vegterbals so much that if there were no other foods in the world I'd rather starve.

...and I'm against all crulty to animals. I'm such a hypocrit.

Right but what's the worth of existence when you're bred, kept, fattened up to be slaughtered, skinned, sliced, gutted and packaged?

Please!
I'm a meat eater and I'm not ashamed! I can agree that some of the conditions in which some meat is processed is not ideal, but...there are free range meats, and organic farms that do not pump meat full of chemicals. You can support your local butcher and get very fresh meat compared to what is in your local chain grocery store.
Do all you who look down your nose at eating meat, also look down your nose at say...the Native Americans, who hunted to survive? If you do not then you should not look down your nose at those of us who still feel meat is a vital part of their existance.
My husband is an AVID hunter, and I see nothing wrong with it at all! (flame away folx!)
Through out my life I've eaten Deer, Wild turkey, duck, bear, moose, and elk.
biggrin

Personally I wouldn't want to see it but would never criticise those who hunt for survival. Those who hunt for fun hell yeah I'd criticise although if they have the courage in their convictions to kill, gut, skin and eat the prey themselves then at least they're not a hypcorite. Those buying their flesh cellophance wrapped in supermarket divorced from the nasty slaughterhouse end of the process had other options.

It's really not that terrible to see...strangley enough..it seems natural.
obviously my husband doesn't hunt for our "survival" he hunts as a sport, BUT we do eat everything that he kills...be it fish, turkey or deer. He also ties flies (for fly fishing) and uses the deer hair for that.
All hunters I know are very environmentally conscious, safety oriented, and responsible.
As for those who "buy their flesh" (no..no slant there) wrapped in cellophane in a supermarket...well, just like you said...they have options...and that is what they have chosen...still nothing wrong with it. To each their own.

Well I do think there is something wrong with it, so the issue's essentially relative to the individual. How was using the word "flesh" slanted btw?

For the record...I never will criticize a meat-eater unless I'm provoked. (Which often happens cos meat-eaters often seem offended when they meet a vegetarian.) BUT if I was getting into it with someone and found out they only ate meat they killed by hunting, I'd stop immediately as that's much closer to the 'natural' chain of life. There's A HUGE difference between that and buying your meat from the big-chain grocers or living off McDonald's burgers (which is where MOST people get their meat)...

In the end all, though, to each their own...

Being a vegetarian is to me NOT a choice based on rational arguments, but a matter of my personal emotions. Look at a piglet. Think of it being slaughtered. Does this make you a) sad -> become a veggie
b) hungry -> have a sausage

simple, isn't it?

that's slanted cos you called it what it was, instead of using one of the euphamisms that are acceptable so people don't have to really think about what they are eating, silly!

woot!

I was one of those annoying animal-rights adolescents. At every family gathering, I'd walk around in my "Meat is Murder" t-shirt (with the lyrics on it) and I'd sing that song every time I walked through the kitchen...

lol I'm glad I grew outta that phase! lol

Hey, I'll admit we all use a slant to make what we do/eat/believe sound better or more acceptable. When was the last time you went to the store and looked for some "Pig" or some "Cow-Steak". By giving the rpdouct a different name, it seperates it some from the animal you are eating.

On the other hand. I like to eat TOFU, which really is 'bean curd.' Since 'bean curd' sounds kinda gross, we call it something else...

Communication is filled with so many slants. We all do it, it's okay. I just like to be aware of them...

Fourteen years and counting, yo.

I was boiling tofu pups back when Prince was rappin' about squirrel meat.

I don't understand the whole stigma around vegetarianism. To me, it's just the way I approach the food I eat.

What's even more annoying to me than those people who, when I tell them I'm veggie, get really defensive about their meat-eating habits, are those people who say "oh, I'm a vegetarian too...except sometimes I eat chicken and fish, and I let myself have a hamburger every now and then."

YOU ARE NOT A VEGETARIAN!!!

It's cool that you have a diet that's low on meat. That's commendable. That's great. Just SAY that. AAAUGHH!

hey shorty, i didn't say anything bad about meat-eaters...in fact in my first post i said that although i agree with and admire the vegetarian ideal, i'm far from a vegetarian when it comes to my daily eating habits.

although, actually, i HAVE noticed that i am eating less and less beef lately...chicken, i still haven't even tried to kick. cows are so much cuter than chickens anyway. it's not like morrissey sang FOWL is murder. wink

i've noticed that a lot of people tend to get very defensive whenever the topic of vegetarianism is brought up. very few of the actual vegetarians i have had the distinct pleasure of knowing throughout my life have ever forced their eating habits on me...and i think that has caused me to respect their position even more. maybe i'm just lucky that way.

endorphin74, that story about you wearing your 'meat is murder' shirt around the house...you're so fucking cute!

Strange...when I eat a hamburger, I never think..."cow".

When I eat pizza...I never think..."pig or cow"; I think
pepperoni, cheese, and whatever else is on there.

Now when I eat chicken...for a moment I do see a "chicken"
but then I go..."nah, can't really be the same thing."
