I believe the Screwdriver WAV from Purplemusic does not have this issue.

Christ, I listened to Breakfast Can Wait again (I was not really interested upon first listen), and was kind of getting into it...but I had forgotten about the squeaky voice. Jeez, talk about ruining the mood!

What the fuck was he thinking? LOL

Probably that his fanbase jacks off to all his other voice alteration tracks and calls them classics.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Ok, this got me interested, so I bought from Purple Music too. Not sure where the wav is as I could only seem to find an mp3. But, and it's a big BUT... Zero clipping, best sounding version yet and can be played loud! headbang

Big resepct to Purple Music for doing it right.

I just realised that was the first time I've ever bought any kind of digital download. I somehow managed to avoid all the previous Prince online fun and games.

I have to say that my one and only experience of dealing directly with Prince proved to be simple, effective, and curiously pleasing. Pleasing in that I could actually put some money straight into the man's pockets (actually, does he have pockets?)

I don't want to think about all the money I spent on his records, concerts, books, clothes, and all kinds of nonsense in the past, but I do wonder just how much of that ever ended up in his bank account.

The only other time i purchased a digital song file was Prince's "Guitar" a few years back. A little disappointed that it wasn't really a guitary sounding song but a good demo for what was on Planet Earth.

The 'mp3' at Purplemusic used to give you a WAV download.

But at least you can confirm the lack of clipping in their WAV!

So that means that some different 'mastering' was done to the tracks or at least the 3rdeyegirl.com WAV was doctored with amateurishly after it was mastered.

This is absurd. Of course mr Prince has no quality control process unless it is in his own head.

It's definitely now an mp3. 320k and absolutely fine.

I bought the wav at Purple Music the day they released it. I can confirm there is clipping.

Buy any new release, either physical or digital, and you will find clipping. It is (sadly) the standard.

I compared the timings I saw in the englishgent's screencapures and did not see clipping, at least not as grave as the ones he showed us.

strangely enough i find myself going back to that demo quite a lot.

in fact, i think i like it more than the final version of the song.

the demo just has that free, poppy sound that just bounces all over

the place. i love that.

It's like new year, despite all the resolutions I throw my money at him anyway.

So far I'm not too hot on Breakfast Can Wait, but I dig the RNRLA remix and LOVE the ScrewDriver Remix. Daaaaamn I want Power Trio gigs.

I'd agree with that. I think at the time the fans gave him so much shit because it was a song about his guitar that didn't have loads of guitar, but I loved that about it. It made it sound more original. I like the released version but it's just by-the-numbers guitar stuff.

It always made me wonder if he changed it after fan feedback - a perfectly example of why he should just ignore us!

Okay. I'm away from home right now, it will be late tonight or tomorrow.

Using SoundForge, the WAV file I got from Purple Music begins clipping immediately, in the first few seconds, and continues clipping throughout the song. Some of the worst spots are at 1:19-1:20, 2:25-2:26, 3:03-3:04, 4:09.

I see this visually AND the peak meters show it as well.

It's not worse than anything else on the market or any of the albums he's released in the last 5-10 years. In fact, I've seen worse, much worse. But, it IS clipping nonetheless....

That said, within the parameters of current standards, I'm happy with this. It sounds good. I'm not complaining about Prince. It's the standard that ALL in the industry are using that is shameful.

EDIT: It's MUCH better than the one shown in the image above...

Well I downloaded the 4 tracks from 3rdeyegirl.com

Screwdriver is a WAV and the other 3 are MP3s.

There's also a wooshy sound when your enter the web site so I recorded that too - for completeness sake. Now they're in my iTunes library.

The songs are great, but I'm a bit peaved about the distortion.

Serveral other orgers also raise this concern. Particularly rough on the bass end. I do hope the loudness wars are not going to creep into Prince's work now.

I have never felt more delighted parting with £2.30. (Which doesn't buy you even a cup of coffee in London nowadays.)

I hope Prince realizes that his fans are ready, willing and able to spend on his music, concerts and merchandise. If only he continues to make it this easy for us to show our support.

Europe Summer 2013 tour? We're ready for you, Prince! Bring it on!

I d/loaded the tracks on day of release - no problems - I don't have a Paypal a/c or a credit card - simply had my partner use his credit card. Baffles me why people are having problems. Online shopping is well past it's infancy and, frankly, if you can't navigate a simple shopping cart by now maybe you shouldn't be let loose on the internet razz
