I see in a clip from the show during Mountains he calls out John (the sound guy) a few times, one time he says I wish everbody in the back we're during their job. I remember during the 1 few songs @ the North Sea Jazz Fest. he was calling this guy out John out then too, sounds like it's time to get rid of him.

Seriously, I can not understand why some of you still stand by P after this most horrible concert of all time. Maybe you hadn't been there, maybe you share a secret belief with the man, maybe you are being psychologically twisted by his wishiwashi-comments on love, god and spirituality.

If the little chap would have a bit of love other than to his ego, he would have handled this misery last night in Cologne differently.

Facts are:

- don't blame the promoter or the venue: both hava had countless years of professional experience

- don't be so silly to blame either Cologne or german audiences in general. if it wasn't a sell out, it's due to people's axperiences with P's divaish behaviour during previous shows in the area (and there were a few)

- after the break P shouted the name of the sound enginerr to the audience, stating that any complaint should be adressed to the poor chap who abviously couldn't handle the situation. But seriously, after having been pro for more than three decades the blame is entirely on P himself. He can soundcheck in the afternoon and eventually fire and hire another sound-guy, if the one in attendance hadn't been to his liking.

- many attended terrible-sound-shows during this tour, which puts evidence to the assumption that P is carrying the most tone-deaf sound-engineers with him (or hires them in the individual cities).

- his quality-control is completely lost. how can you leave the stage after one song, have no announcement read for 25 minutes and then reappear wiht constantly throwing the word soundcheck around plus complaining about the sound-guy?

- people should sue Prince, not the local promoter for serious health-damages after this volume-horror in Cologne. And remember; it's not the first time that people complained about the loudness-factor during this tour. I remember Rotterdam I quite well, or rather unwell.

Let's face it: Prince is really unreliable in his deliverance, it can be heaven, but it's mostly been hell in the last couple of years. He should retire or go jam with Larry Graham somewhere secretly for the rest of his life. His creative peak is long gone, his creativity is waning and on top of that he is unable to deliver professionally on stage. What a waste of time, money, energy and patience with and on the guy.

I continue to stand by Prince because I saw him in Los Angeles 13 times a few months ago and I enjoyed every minute of every show. There were never any sound issues in LA at any of the venues. Dude had a bad night. It happens to everyone, even Prince.

Well, I remember being at the MSG show on 2/7 and the opening act sound was awful !!!! I complained to the ushers and it seemed like it improved a bit but I was noticing that I was missing a few things here and there, thinking that the sound was kind of "off kilter" during certain times that night.

I'm really surprised to read all the bad reviews about the sound here. I really wonder what's going on inside of Prince's head when stuff like this happens. Is he being cheap and hiring sound interns or something or is he just creating more publicity for himself with the bad shows? Who knows but I hope he gets it together, his legacy is at stake....

Trolls be gone!

Truth is, the sound in the Lanxess Arena is always bad UNLESS you are using the house PA that is especially tuned to deal with the arenas sonic and architectual problems. If the promoter hasn't told Prince beforehand that he HAS to use the house PA instead of his own in order to avoid sound problems then no surprise about the bad sound.

Often the truth isn't b/w so i don't think the promoter's official statement is necessarily 100% accurate.

.

Not true at all.

1. The most of his recent European gigs in Paris, Ghent, Helsinki, latter North Sea Jazz etc. were huge successes. If he sucked at Cologne or the first North Sea Jazz gig, doesn't mean his doings were "mostly hell during the last couple of years". That's simply a lie, because he didn't sucked at the States, either.

2. From you behalf, perhaps. There are hundreds of thousands - or perhaps millions - concert goers who highly disagree with you. You can choose not to go anymore, but that's purely your own decission.

I have personally done thousands of gigs during my professional years as musician. Sometimes you deliver good, medicore or bad performances. You can't avoid that. Because we are dealing with the humans, different spaces and audiencies, there are always many variables, which can go wrong.

Sometimes frustration or anger can be shown, as well. Especially, when your monitors doesn't work or stupid bastards are throwing beer cans towards your face. I would have walked from the stage immediately, when something like that happened. So has the most of my colleagues.

I feel sorry for the most of Cologne audience for wasted money, but let's stick stick to the reality. Everybody has occationally bad days at work, so has Prince.

Just got back from Cologne. neutral Pretty dissapointed aswell. This was my third Prince concert... First two were beyond amazing. This one was way too short ... However I will start with the + thinks.

These are the things that I liked:

1. He played Laydown, which I was really hoping for.

2. We were standing in the second row in the right inner corner of the stage and at the sound check he came really really close to us and played on his guitar for about 10 minutes. It was a really personal moment for me. razz Eye contact, smiled, everything, it was really cool, but short. sad

3. IDA!!!!!! That's all I have to say... That woman gives me goose bumps like noone else besides Prince.

4. (Don't hate on me) Shelby. I love her voice, that's it! And the chemistry between her and Prince was amazing!

The things I didn't like:

1. The late start. sad

2. The half hour pause after Laydown. Ppl started booing. It was really frustrating.

3. The short gig, people were even angrier at the end. Started throwing raped "Time to get funky" banners on the stage... eek

4. Sorry again: ANDY!!!! I was really really hoping I'd be wrong about my previous comments about her. But now that I've seen her live, I have to say the same thing. I DON'T UNDERSTAND! Purple rain - first minutes while Prince was changin clothes, she was sent out to do the intro. She did nothing, hit a couple of notes on her guitar (off-key) with absolutely no contact with the audience. And before that Prince told her to show us her African dance, which I and most probably all English speaking ppl in the audience could understand perfectly, she kept asking him: What do you want me to do, what do you want me to do?? I was about to scream: HE ASKED YOU TO PUT YOUR GUITAR DOWN AND SHOW US YOUR AFRICAN DANCE!!!! biggrin It was an imbarassing and unprofessional moment. However: I really really loved her dance. wink That was quite funky, but unfortunately that was all she could add to the show. sad I am still searching for the answer WHY, because obviously Prince really likes her, he sang: Andy Allo will be a superstar! I don't thing there is anything personal going on between the two of them, however Prince really believes that she is the next big thing, that's for sure. She is pretty though.

5. Purple rain - it was a rather short...

All in all: Despite the fact that the gig was awfully short and the technical issues ruined everything, while he performed I enjoyed every second of it. Maybe next I will have to be more careful, when picking the next venue I'll go to...

Prince seems to be obsessed with volume somehow. The whole Cologne affair reminds me of the old story with the Prince concert back in 1988 in Hamburg (?), Germany. As far as i can remember this was an open-air gig and the music was so loud that several people suffered a hear damage from it. German promoter Fritz Rau got sued by these people, it was big in Germanys press back then.

Fritz Rau did talk about this incident in a longer TV-interview and said that he asked Prince several times to turn the volume down, but he refused to do so. I cant remember the full story though....

This wikipedia entry about the Lanxess arean proves my point btw about the difficult sonic/acoustic problems:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanxess_Arena

It specifically mentions that for most sound engineers it's almost impossible during soundcheck to get an idea how the sound will be when the arena is crowded. So as said that's a very known fact - question is, if anyone told Prince (the truth) about it.Doesn't seem to be the case..

What's kind of funny about the whole sound-system thing is that Germans for years prided themselves on their "extreme" engineering precision and performance -- BMWs, MBZ's, etc. but apparently not sound, things change-- oh well.

This too shall pass.

Fact is:

- I paid 99 Euros for the ticket

- was so excited b4 2 c Prince again live after almost 9 years (2002 ONA Tour Oberhausen) and for the 9th time since 1992 (D&P Tour Dortmnund)

- waited so long (from 5:45pm till the beginning of "Laydown" at 8:40pm and once again from 8:45pm till 9:25pm)

- was standing in the 5th row or so

- "enjoyed" a really bad sound and mediocre set of songs

- and possibly the shortest main concert gig of Prince of all time => 72 minutes of music netto!

This was the text by promoter in Online-Ticket-Shops and on their website:

"With his energetic mix of funk, soul and rock guitar in the eighties, Prince revolutionized the world of pop. His hits "Purple Rain," "Kiss," "U Got The Look" and many more inspired millions of people. The multi-talented sold more than 100 million records and received countless awards, including seven Grammys and an Oscar. His provocative, mostly three-hour shows are now and again a sensation and inspired the masses! As part of its "Welcome 2 America Tour 2011" Prince is coming to Germany ...."

I don't wanna c a Prince concert in the next years. 100 Euros (and maybe 150 Euros in 5 years) is too expensive for such a short time of "pleasure". I will always love his music and his concerts in the past. I will buy his next CDs too. But a concert of the old hits with bad sounds (and maybe as short as the Cologne gig) .... no, forget ist. Got some concerts of SOTT, Lovesexy, Nude, D&P, Act II and others on tape, CD, VHS, DVD etc ...

I really wonder how rich all those people are that say "why are you so upset, just try another gig...". To me more than 200€ (2 Pers) are a lot of money and I have to work for a long time to earn that money. The concert was so bad that I see no difference between spending it to Prince or throwing it out of the window. After the concert I have been speaking to women that have been nearly crying because they have "lost" so much money.

Fact is, that I pay an artist for his music and his show. He is responsible for the members of his band, the staff, the place to play. If one of those "circumstances" is not good enough, he has to change it. What Prince did is so unprofessional, that I can´t believe it. Apart of falling ill I see no excuses for an artist acting like he did.

How far away from his fans (how rich? how arrogant?) must an artist be who doesn´t care for the time, the love, the money his fans spent.....

It's always a risk going to a concert that it gets fucked up somehow (see Kings of Leon recently too). But I feel bad for the german fans who waited a long time to see him again and then got this. Particularly after so many great gigs elsewhere. I can't imagine Prince and his band being anything but devestated about this too. It must really suck for them to have delivered a malperformance when all they really wanted to do this was to blow the roof of the house and give the people what they came for. Let's hope the sound (and light) probs are in the past soon. As the Dublin reports told us, it does seem like Prince has picked up on the criticism and has started to check the sound better before the show, so there're no complains about it during it. That's a positive sign these things will too become better...

Ticket prices for Janet Jackson in Berlin were €100, too. And she only played 85 minutes.

And everybody was happy afterwards.

There are many artists that only play up to 90 minutes and no one is dissapointed.

Come to Copenhagen this weekend. You only pay €100 (800 kronen) for the 2 day festival including 2 Prince concerts. It's much cheaper than the Cologne gig. And you'll see Maceo Parker and all the others, too.

Ticket prices for Janet Jackson in Berlin were €100, too. And she only played 85 minutes.

And everybody was happy afterwards.

There are many artists that only play up to 90 minutes and no one is dissapointed.

I doubt that Janet "played" anything. It's much easier to get the sound right at a full playback dance revue.

Will you pay me the flight and hotel costs from cologne to Copenhagen?
