I had an absolutely fantastic time at the gig, a really beautiful night (aside from a few spots of rain during Purple Rain).

We could hear the soundcheck (DMSR) as we arrived at the castle at 6pm and it really set the tone for a great evening. It was hit after hit but I particularly enjoyed "The Bird" and "Jungle Love" towards the end of the set.

Prince at Malahide Castle tonight

Hey there,

Just back from Prince at Malahide Castle, round the corner from where I grew up in Dublin. Editor once summed him up as 'sensational' live, which is exactly what he was/is.

Prince, respelendent in white, opened with an extremely unusual number 'Gold' from The Gold Experience - one of his uberweird and unpopular albums he did when he was a symbol back in '93. Actually that was a brilliant album and the diehards all loved it (as an aside if anyone by the way, ever wants to 'know' Prince as a Bob Dylanesque man and a guitar acoustic performer he did a raw, naked soul bearing compilation which slipped in as a sister to The Crystal Ball back in around 97 - well worth checking out), but anyway, we are talking about Malahide Castle tonight and the live experience.

after Gold, he monched into another unusual number called 'Shhh' which Prince is obviously very fond of, for its eerie, slow baseline, which he cleverly meshed with Little Red Corvette, done in a delicate spooky manner - the fusion of the two is one of the greatest things i have ever beholded, as the two basslines compliement each other perfectly and all the schmalz of Little Red Corvette is swept away with a reminder that its arbiter is a deep thinker and always five steps ahead of any preconceived notions one might have about the datedness of an 80s tune.....he further blew everyones minds with a rendition of 1999 - clearly one of the hits and a crowd pleaser. Everyone loved it.

The Dubliners oh they were out in their hoardes of purple, predictable, yes, and many food stands, stewards and all the usual rigmorale you would expect from a highly renowned site like Malahide Castle, a very special place where most Dubliners take quiet country walks with their dogs on Sundays, admiring the ruins and beauty of the place. Prince respected that, and he apologised for cancelling his concert in 2008, which we forgave him for. He was accompanied by his incredible backing band of beautiful women, of course, but this team arent the esteemed set of raunchily clad honeyz but gospel session musicians chosen for their profound soulfullness, talent, and natural beauty. Andy Allo is a recent recruit to the New Power Generation - a multitalented 22-year old singer songwriter of half Cameroonian American descent, and she imploded onto the crowd like a tiny, delicate flowergirl Hendrix, with a big Afro, supreme innocence, and a sexiness that only Prince's exquisite taste knows how.

He brings something profound out of everyone, you could tell that his band were so honoured to play with him - at one point Prince left the stage (presumably to get changed) and, the four stunning gospel singers stood together holding hands and sang a rendition of Bob Dylans 'to make you feel my love' think that was popularised by Adele - and whether there is a GOD, there must be! it seemed to shine through the souls of these girls as they sang in perfect harmony, giving literal glory to life, the expressions of their beautiful faces, their monumental vocals, the crowd and the amazing feeling of being there, in Ireland with its sacredness, and people should feel honoured to sing in Ireland and they felt this and so did the Irish people.

True to form, Prince, like Chaplin, Mozart, and all great geniuses before him, decided to bring the tempo right down to that bass root that we all know and love, and chimed cheekily in with some sex strewn numbers like Cream, Sign of the Times, and many more, all exhilarating and punctuated by his supreme skills as a true guitar virtuoso. he didnt show off as much as he did at Hop Farm - he ended the gig with a long and monumental mix on the music box mixing some Sign o the times grooves like Housequake, Controversy, Kiss, Loves R, Musicology, and what is probably his bravest and most profound (in terms of intensity) If i was your girlfriend.

all in all, and i am forgetting much but - to borrow again from editor - sensational experience.

Just back to Belfast, probably the best gig of my life! So much fun, I'm going to have no voice in the morning!

Was in the pit on the right hand stage, quite a lot of aggro flying about from some idiots. Top marks to the bouncers for sorting out two particular idiots right at the start.

That little kid in the red top got the night of his life!

Purple Rain - don't know how much this rendition grabbed anyone else, but let's just say there were tears. Of joy.

I was there with my wife and a friend - it was our friend's first time to a Prince concert, he said (well, sobbed) that Purple Rain was the best live performance of anything he's ever heard, so I think he may be hooked. cool

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

He opened with GOLD! I was in awe. The entire gig was brilliant. He was in great form and the crowd really got that from him. My only critisisms are that he ended a bit abruptly. And for all this talk of "playing 8 hours straight in dublin if they let me", he played 30 minutes under the cerfew. But it was still brilliant but yaknow...

Also he was doing soundcheck right up until Hypnotic Brass Enseble came on. From 4 to half 6 i think. It was kiind of like having an instrumental pre-show or something razz. You have no idea how surreal it was walking around the arena before the gig with prince going "1,2... 1,2... check". Cool, but surreal!

Not sure I get the comment about Chaplin (or Mozart), I don't think I ever saw him bring the tempo right down to a bass note I knew and loved..he made SILENT movies!!!!!

Mozart of Minneapolis makes Malahide his own

Sunday July 31 2011

James Brown used to be introduced on stage thus: "Ladies and gentlemen, it is star time. Are you ready for star time?" Last night at Malahide Castle, 30,000 people were treated to two-and-a-half hours of star time courtesy of Prince Rogers Nelson. He starts as he means to go on with a rollicking version of All That Glitters Ain't Gold. And the audience can already barely contain their excitement. Or their dancing. They got even more excited later to Raspberry Beret and particularly on Lets Go Crazy. The enigmatic singer, who has changed the landscape of music over the course of his 30 years of recording, was something to behold. I'm not just talking about the peculiar white poncho he wore. Sometimes he seemed lost in his own private ecstasies; other times he appeared like he was communicating directly with the gods. Either way, the 53-year-old gave a show that won't be forgotten for all the right reasons for a long time to come. The little man was a revelation from the moment he sashayed onstage at Malahide Castle at 8.10pm like Joan Collins in Dynasty. He offers up something between sin and salvation to the truly gobsmacked crowd. His very special band did some amazing work around Prince's idiosyncratic playing, not least on If I Was Your Girlfriend and 1999, which had everyone in the audience up and bopping. He is an old-fashioned band leader like Duke Ellington. Everything -- every sound -- revolves around him. He is the consummate performer. In person, Prince is absolutely inscrutable ; I interviewed him for LIFE magazine three weeks ago and he gives very little away. Onstage, he is an open book of artistic expression. It was special to watch a musician of Prince's stature work a show, an audience and a band. His band gave Prince the razor-sharp precision he demanded, following him wherever he takes the song -- Kiss is looser than a rubberband; Raspberry Beret funkier than a disco in a cheese factory. Between each declaration of passion, Prince does more than enough to hold the audience in their place lest they faint from what must by then have been a steamy night. The rain kept away and Prince kept going all night. Fifty-three or not, he does jumps and kicks in the air to the beat; shuffles in his heels; winks at the crowd, then kicks off into Kiss. "You don't have to be beautiful to turn me on," he sings, and the words are soaringly sweet and clear as Prince dances across the stage, the imp of perverse. It becomes the mantra for the night. He has that look -- immaculately androgynous, nosebleed-inducing high kitten heels. With a seeming boundless energy, the Mozart of Minneapolis propelled himself into two-and-a-half hours of jazz, funk and pop jams of mind-boggling versatility. This was not just a greatest hits show. It was a greatest artist currently living show. I saw U2 at Glastonbury last month and they were nowhere near as potent as Prince was last night in Dublin. "We want to show our love and respect to Miss Sinead O'Connor," he says, launching into Nothing Compares 2U. Cue general crowd ecstasy. But nothing compares to Prince in this kind of form. He is the most exciting starman and showman alive, with a stagecraft that would make James Brown seem lazy and unimaginative. As he goes from Purple Rain into Creem, nothing prepares you for the breathtaking reach of Prince's impeccable voice -- falsetto one minute, river-deep the next. That's a voice. And with that same voice he told the crowd: "I'm sorry it took so long to come to you." Those lucky enough to be at the show were not to be disappointed courtesy of an authentically exhilarating show of bona fide soul. Come back soon. - BARRY EGAN

Dream show for a casual fan, obviously a bit of a disappointment for anyone on here, setlist-wise, but... not complaining. Great gig overall.

Very abrupt ending, mind.
