Seriously! No tweets from Dr F or anyone for that matter! They all must be in shockedelica nirvana! wink

Maybe he isn't in a good mood tonight, the picture looks like he's ready to drop kick somebody.. shrug sounds like a good show, and the reception was bad. But.. I don't know seems different... maybe the next show will spice up the mood.

Question: While I agree that compared to what I read re: Troubadour shows, this seems less insane, do you really feel it wasn't worth it to be that close? I know I've been spoiled by the cheap Cali tickets and upgrades, but haven't people paid that in arenas to be close throughout the years and wasn't HOB a better experience? Just curious.

Wow, I was seriously considering dropping the $220 (after fees) for this show since I figured the "rock" show would be what I'd want to see... and even being a pretty casual fan I'd have not been too happy with that setlist... I'd want to see what the Troubador saw-- even if I didn't know the songs, I appreciate Prince's talents enough to have REALLY enjoyed it. (and I lean more towards being a rock fan in general than jazz, even though I'm sure the later shows would be good they were still a lot of money) I'd want to see "small club" Prince at a small club, I can go to the Forum to see that show!

I'm sure it was great in its own way, but as of right now I'm pretty glad my credit card survived unscathed... and still hopeful to get back to the Forum. (I'm really not trying to be negative, I feel relief more than anything as I've been kinda bummed all day I wasn't going to the show, but money's just a bit too tight to justify a single $200 ticket)

Quick review - yes $200 for a Forum set list which I expected when the Late Nite Jam changed to "Prince" but Lord help me I LOVED it, was down with all of it, the bass playing, the hat, and being 5 feet away fron him at times was worth it to me. he would do something, I don't know, kick a guitar solo that would stop the grooving crowd in its tracks to watch in awe.
THANK U BRONZEFUNK FOR HOOKING A PURPLE SISTER UP 2NITE, I can't WAIT tonhear about 10pm show.
Heres the review I just texted to my husband:
9pm band out and jammin' DMSR for like 15 mins. Then Prince about 9:15 til 10:30-10:45. Was like a Forum show but up close and less pageantry more like in a down brother type of mood with a knitted white skull cap on the whole time. Played the hell out of "Let's Work" got DOWN on the bass said "I just wanted to see if it WORKED!"
When he came to my side if the stage & shredded the guitar
& glanced up I mouthed "thank u" I'm sure he didn't see but i was appreciative.
Met some cool people 2nite & Security gave me a Prince guitar pick! Thanks Chris!
Goodnight Org gotta drive home & go to work tomorrow in a dream state!

i don't know how long tonights set was, but it definitely didn't seem as long as the troubadour. the troubadour was just a jam session. this show seems like a forum set list at the HOB. FOR $200.

I think the setlist has a lot to do with it. He's not going to stretch the band for 30-40 jazz funk jams at The Forum. But I've seen that at House Of Blues. At the small club shows the energy of Prince, his band and truly enthusiastic fans in the audience (NOT to be confused with celebrities who can afford $500 tickets or "weekend warriors" who only want to hear "When Doves Cry" and don't even sing along to "Raspberry Beret") is something to behold.

One review I read of the recent Troubadour show described it as (paraphrasing here) a very musical, pure joy akin to that of Easter & X-mas morning(s), a visit from the tooth fairy and a Cracker Jack toy surprise all rolled into one.

Prince IS music. Pure music. This is evident at the small shows. It's a shame more people can't see him in this setting.

BTW: Dr. Funkenberry just Tweeted he opened the second show with the Star Spangled Banner!!

Awesome!

Well, thanks for trying. After hearing HOB didn't have good cell reception--didn't really hope for it. But I still LOVE the show you streamed from the Toubadour. I couldn't believe how good it sounded.I don't think any performances tonight will top that anyway--esp. if they are the usual--which are fine for the Forum--but with a small club venue like HOB you want more! lol

Yeah he didn't pull out anything on par with say "case of you" but it was way funkier than a typical forum show. I'd say overall the troubadour show was more awe inspiring but this was still a really good set.

Don't get me wrong , it's great to have the chance to see any show at a smaller venue. But, the reality is he came out an hour late, played maybe 90 minutes and gave ABSOLUTELY NO EFFORT into putting together a setlist. On this tour I've seen six Forum shows and one in San Jose. I've seen this exact setlist for 25 dollars. He just repackaged it and sold it to me for 220... So disappointed.

I've seen him at HOB before. If you have too, then you know what an experience it really can be. This was not it. Just an expensive ticket that I have to pay for. Really disappointing.

I'm not sure some of you went to the same show I did. Now, granted it was my FIRST time seeing PRINCE, but me and my fiance's jaws were on the floor...in awe of a consummate performer doing what he does best. Yes, we waited a little extra. Yes, he could have played longer. But...isn't that the point? "leave them wanting more"

Tonight was a revelation. I am "wanting more". I will be going to as many Forum shows as possible.

Also I've NEVER seen him get proper angry at ppl. Man alive all the stories are real.. Phew
But he's was in an amazing mood with us... V playful and fun

Brown skin w shelby
Colonized mind
Dreamer
She's always in my hair
He played the melody from America during one solo - i nearly exploded

Just came back from the second show, and it was definitely NOT jazz. This was a rock concert, probably similar to the second Troubadour show. Yes, it was in the restaurant upstairs. Maybe 100 - 150 people tops.

He opened with a blues jam making fun of their tech guy Jose because of some speaker issues ("Jose can you see..."), which led into a sharp guitar intro for the Star Spangled Banner. From there it was Gingerbread Man, Dreamer, Colonized Mind, Welcome 2 America, She's Always in My Hair and Little Red Corvette. Yes, there was some more, but those were the standouts (including a show-stopping "Brown Skin" from Shelby J -- I think I still have some Shelby spit on my shirt, btw).

What happened to the jazz? I think he saw the room and the crowd and the tiny stage and thought "Nah, this calls for a guitar." In fact, we saw bipoloar Prince -- raging at the stage techs in anger one minute and being playful with the audience the next.

It was a loud, rockin', fly-by-the-seat-of-your-buttless-pants show that ran for 90 minutes. Did I mention it was LOUD?

Oh, and it's official, this weekend will be the last 3 shows of his residency in LA. He said it himself at the end of tonight's "jazz cafe".... which was not a cafe... and certainly wasn't jazz.
