I enjoyed his performances lastnight.

Cool for him to actually interview a little in the beginning.

Found it odd though that he complained about people covering his songs and then closed the show with You're the One For Me by D-Train.

... covering meaning remaking one of his songs and putting it on 'their' album and being PAID for it like they wrote it, not performing it LIVE at a tv performance or LIVE show, I think is P's meaning.

prince has done that plenty of times too

I'm not a fan of "Laydown"-neither the song on 20TEN or the live performance from Lopez Tonight convinced me this song is good. It sounds like a funk song that's been phased and processed with the production of contemporary hip-hop songs and r&b. I read several posts about Shelby J being the female counterpart to Tony M. I don't know if I'm willing to subscribe to that notion, but Shelby would be a better lead singer/back-up vocalist in another band, but in Prince's band, it's like she bogards the stage.

At times, she reminds me of Kim from Different World, when she joined Ron's band and took over the band to the point where the band quit because of her ego. I'm not saying she's anything remotely like that, but her role needs to be not as prominent

Somone raised the point earlier in the thread that P has not had that many 'covered remakes' on his albums from For You to 20Ten and I tend to agree with them, so when you say 'plenty' I think and say, not so much ...

If he hadn't played a "new" song on the show, casual observers would think (perhaps accurately) that he must not have any good new material worth playing.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

He's done a good half dozen. Either he approves of covers or not, it's not like he made the mistake one time and immediately regretted it.

Point taken because we're gonna end up goig back and forth on this until Prince himself clears up why he does other 'old school' artist mostly, music. I'd love for him to clarify what exactly he means about that. I'll ask him one day ...

This is not fair........

21 nights in LA, and only 3 in Oakland? What about San Jose dude!!!?

sad

... at least it's in California.

HeLL, if Prince was doin' 21 Nights in Orlando FL. and I live in South Florida, I'd make it up to Orlando EVERY weekend to get a piece of that action !!!

I'm gettin' ahead of myself, do you live in California GetAwayFromMe?

I've got too many obligations to be able to go away for any weekend, let alone for a Prince concert. He's always come to San Jose, he should've this time too. neutral

yeah I am not one to tear apart what he says, usually, but I am curious what he really feels here.

On Lopez he mentioned Chaka & Sinead, and I can't believe he was really bothered when I Feel 4 U became a huge hit. But maybe he was, I don't know.

but like you say, until he clarifies we can only wonder

biggrin I think that Prince doesn't lkie reading the concert reviews and seeing the dumbass writers saying that "Prince covered Sinead O'Connors nothin compa..." or "The Times C.O.O.L" shit like that... I also think when an artist plays a cover of a song live that it is more of a show of respect for that song or the artist that put that song out there for us 2 n'joi like when Prince does some MJ ish or when MJ's band played Beautiful Night... IMO biggrin

DOES ANYONE HAVE FOOTAGE OR PICS FROM OCT.9 1999 AT THE FOUNATIN BLEU IN MIAMI??? ORG NOTE ME IF U DO...PLEASE!!!

I think you are right, but that is the fault of public perception, not the artists covering a song. I doubt Prince thinks Aretha's version of Respect is a bad thing or Tina Turner's Proud Mary.

And yes he clearly thinks live covers are okay because he does them all the time.

He might have a valid point somewhere, but I think a lot of times we are only getting the tip of the iceberg of his opinions. And I don't like that because it doesn't make sense (to me) but he is putting it out there for millions of people to misunderstand

Regarding the cover songs. He's absolutely correct when he said people don't realize that the artist covering the song is doing a cover. I had a friend ask me why Prince was singing Alicia Keys song once. As long as the record labels control that aspect of recording that misconception will not change. A lot of people believe theses artists did it first...

Chaka Khan

Melisa Morgan

Alicia Keys

Sinead O'Connor

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

ok...so I had only seen the clips on youtube of his performances and interview and I was like ehh...it was an ok appearance. BUT, I watched it on demand last evening and it was WAY better than I thought it was going to be. I did try and remind myself what it would be like if I were just a casual fan seeing him on TV for the first time in a long while...and with that in mind I was IMPRESSED! The man brings it, everytime! Yeah..I've seen those moves before and heard better versions of some songs before but ...that's MY jaded POV. and has really got NOTHING to do with Prince. He is a true showman! I thought it was a great appearance. the interview was cute, I loved Prince's mannerisms and he seem very relaxed. George is a little quirky but overall I thought he was quite gracious and sweet. You could really tell he thought this was huge and appreciated it. anyway..that's my 2 cents on it, and some of you are down right jaded and angry. razz

It's not a conspiracy, everyone knew Prince wrote I Feel 4 U and Nothing Compares 2 U at the time. Manic Monday too.

People don't know now because they've stopped talking about it, but at the time it was well publicized.

true, and actually being at a show is a completely different experience. The best TV performance can't match a live concert.

Eff Youtube cell phone videos & streaming boots of the show!!! You people in LA need to shell out the $25. Do yourselves a favor!! lol
