Shameless Appreciation

Can we just talk about Shameless and how much we love this show?
Favorite moments...scenes?

The first few series of the UK version were fantastic. Sadly they went on to long with it. Seems wierd seeing the characters cast for the US version.

She believed in fairy tales and Princes.

I've loved the US version since day one. I started to almost simultaneously watch the UK version when the US version hit the airwaves. It was a bit too much deja vu, so I nixed the UK series and stuck with the US. I think for the most part every season has been really well done. I love how every other season is either a winter setting or a hot summer setting. I miss Joan Cusack on the show. But I think her character was probably played to the fullest.

I actually don't care much about Frank at this point. He's such an extraneous character by now and it actually irritates me when he gets involved with Carl or Debbie. When Debbie goes off and decides to have a baby with a boy or tries to push herself into adulthood because she has no control over anything else in her life, that's good television. When Carl shackles someone in the basement based on his patriotism (which is irony in itself), that's good storytelling. Pushing gender and sexuality boundaries with Ian and Lip, or rooting for Fiona to actually do something more than hustle at a bar is great storytelling. Pepper in V and Kevin's hustle with the Russian, which is such a great metaphor for collusion, yet started way before Trump's problems were evident, Liam ingesting cocaine, or Monica's bipolar disorder - it really dips into some heady topics without being preachy.

I do think Jimmy/Steve (Justin Chatwin) making an appearance right now would be pretty sweet. And while Mickey was a fun bad boy for Ian to get muddled down with, I sorta feel like his living-on-the-edge character might have been played to the most like Joan's character was played. They've run their course.

It has maintained the ability to have great seasons every year with an engaging and suspenseful storyline, whether it was them losing the house then getting it back, or whatever - I don't think they've had a bad season yet.

I love this show as we can all see parts of ourself in these characters, or been through something they are going through. Being the oldest of four I have felt Fiona's pain of feeling the brunt of having to take on all the siblings drama, or having one alcoholic parent make a mess out of your life while you are trying to do whats right like go to college (like Lip).

Agree that they have done SO MUCH in the show and I am only on season 5 playing catch up. Started watching the UK version as well because the US version was not on Netflix until season 6.

Agree that Jimmy's character would be very refreshing this far in as Fiona's legal troubles could really use a boost, however I did sneak in and see that she is doing better and getting in the real estate business. I was very tired of Jimmy though by season 3. His antics were getting annoying, and character was in the way of Ian's development...since he wasnt around much.

Don't see Frank's antics helping the family out anymore..now he's just drug addicted and getting in the way of the others. I saw that Debbie had a baby (with whom I dont know). Veronica letting Kevin sleep with her mom to have a baby was HILARIOUS I can't think of another show I have seen so much silliness in one setting.

Oh thanks, I have to catch up on season 6. I definitely love the US version better, the UK version was pretty good, and I did see it first but I think the fact they kept losing cast members made it hard to keep up.

I mean.... really? Although, maybe you don't live in the U.S? (I forget.)

But yeah, it's in its 8th season/series. They had to really fight to not have it be a comedy. When producers pitched it to Showtime & other networks, everyone wanted it to be just white trash comedy and have them be a caricature of poor people. The producers fought to have it be a drama and show that these type of people exist and that living under the tracks is a reality for many folks struggling to make it in life. I think they felt like networks wanted to do a grittier Roseanne or King of Queens. Had it been that, it probably would not have lasted so long, nor would I have watched it either.

I live in Ireland. I only vaguely remember the English one because my sister is a big fan of it but I never heard her mention an American version.

That's right. You've mentioned that before, but it was just escaping me.

The US version is great. As I mentioned, I had started watching the UK version when I started the US version, but they were so identical I gave up on the UK one. It was too much deja vu. I don't know how much they changed as time went on.

A lot because the US version still has all of its main characters, the UK version had to bring in several new characters to replace the ones they lost. For instance Fiona left after the 2nd season in the UK version.

I fell behind on Shameless during season 5, but loved the first four seasons. During season 4 I was so addicted to it I briefly had it as my top show of all time.

Watching more and more of it. Looks like Ian is having depression issues and acting crazy sad

Getting tired of Lip's "oh im in college, oh now I am dropping out, oh now Im back in college..." like dude get it together. Seems like the writers had trouble finding a storyline for him.

I strangely like Samantha on the show.

I wish Grandma Ghallager did not die, I LOVED her blunt honesty and helping the kids out. They need her in the show.

They really show depression in an honest light with Ian character. I was really scared for him.

Lip is struggling, but he finds a kinship with the professor.

There eventually is another character, for a season, who resembles grandma in attitude and bluntness.

That's his character in Gotham, I'm assuming it's The Joker, I'm behind on that show too. I'm kind of watching season 7 of Shameless now, I don't see him so much as a fuq up, they all have their issues that's for sure. The only episode in season 8 I've seen is where he wanted to purchase a church for a shelter and Fiona is selling it to another buyer, so I'm not sure what the updated issues are at the moment.

What are the odds that the picture Fiona wanted would be sitting right there on the top of all that junk?

Now how is this going to play out that Veronica really wants to be dominated by Kevin? Mmmm, I don't know, it could go badly as far as the audience is concerned. I have loved their relationship so far even as unconventional as it is, they have a chemistry together that works but I don't know about this she subconsciously wants to be dominated thing. We'll see.

Fiona, getting too perfect, she's running a diner, managing a complex, taking care of everything and everybody, practically every guy she meets wants her they're just too messed up themselves to stay with her, no burnout, no depression, just plugging right along so well against a zillion and one obstacles.

Glad to see that Ian still has his EMT job, I was SO proud of him for going back and basically taking his job back.

Given the family background somebody in the family would have to be struggling with addiction issues, they're not sugar coating it, but I'm not sure about how Lip talks to his professor, it's like he's his personal whipping boy at times. He's got 2 father figures now, one he pins all his hopes on and the other he takes out his frustrations on. Maybe it's because of where I'm at in the back episodes while looking at the current episodes.

Liam looks like such the oddball in the family, I wish they could have kept the original kid. But he is cute with Frank like his little buddy.

I somehow lost track of Debbie this episode, so I'll try to pay more attention to her next episode.

I haven't figured out who the guy is with the beard I'm so behind.

It seems many of them are on the upswing but on their own. It's not very ensemble feeling lately. Carl is detoxing people and uber-patriotic right now. Ian is an EMT. Lip is helping a friend in need. Frank is Employee of the Month. Liam is in a charter school. Fiona is owning property & being her own boss. The only one barely hanging on is Debbie, and apparently, and she's in another state? The only ones who seem to struggle a bit is Kevin and V w/ the Russian Svetlana (which has turned into a great metaphor for what's going on right now in the U.S.) But even there, Kevin is finding himself and V is more than just crankin' her neck to read someone's mail. Let's not forget that Svetlana traces back to a forced marriage with Mickey (they had a baby I think) and who Ian was also fucking while hiding his homosexuality.

I sorta think it's all going to fall. It's fine to give them all a leg up for a while - a little hope & sunshine - but the show isn't about that. It's truly about robbing from Peter to pay Paul at any cost to survive. It has to come back to them losing their job, or property and sitting in that living room having, for a few minutes, a moment of just being Gallaghers together. Kind of a "Well, let's get to it and do it" moment.

The guy w/ the beard? Who is that?

Regarding Kev & V: It sort of echoes back to Sheila letting Frank live there in trade for her shoving arm-sized dildos up Frank's ass to dominate him.

I hope they're not setting Fione up for that big of a fall. Then again I could be just looking at it between 2 seasons and not seeing a few episodes of down time for her so it looks like she's just bouncing from one crisis to another, and another completely unshakened.

Well Frank got dropped kicked again as usual. He's gone to some very unique places in life.

Interesting your views on Svetlana role, I'd of never have seen that. I'll wait another episode to see where they go with this new "enlightenment" because this looks more like Veronica doesn't know who she is.

Just a few thoughts...

Kevin's ass doesn't get nearly enough screentime.

Favorite moment? Last week's shot of Kevin's ass.

The latest recasting of Liam has been jarring.

Maybe they're going somewhere useful with it. But as of now, the storyline with Professor Youens seems unnecessary. As the lives of all the main character's, even Francis, are relatively good and functioning, I guess someone had to be the catastrophic fuckup this season. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I applaud the writers for keeping my attention for 8 seasons. I read they renewed the show for a 9th season. That must be some sort of record for a Showtime dramedy.

We got Lip playing savior. Goodbye, Professor, that was sad to see, but he doesn't want saving
Ian's angry, hopefully he's okay but I don't think so.
Carl's on the path of being manipulated but we'll have to see if that's true.
Frank's created his own 'job'. He'll get busted.
Fione finds a new man possibly.
Good one Debbie.
K & V, they so goofy

I Loved Shameless from the get-go...I fell off when the Fiona's boyfriend had money problems or something and we saw him walking on a yacht to meet his Criminal in-laws...I forget what season..Maybe 2 or 3 seasons ago...I was curious if he was killed or maybe he had no other choice but to stay with his criminal in-laws...

Frank is just AWFUL and hilarious...A couple of seasons ago the Show really went there when they allowed Frank to start sleeping with Men for anything he needed....I think he was Blowing all kinds of Men in restaurants...LOL...
