This ain't PC...but years ago when unwanted people like phone solicitors called me, I used to answer the phone with: "No hablo Ingles. Que?!" razz lol

jajaja esa es buena do you speak spanish?

Only what little I can remember from college Spanish. razz I wish I did speak it. That was pretty effective at getting rid of phone solicitors though.

My roommate in New York got very upset with me, because I always answered the phone by stating my name.

That is normal in Holland, you say your name, so the caller knows who he/she is talking to.

American roommate thought I was very inconsiderate and accused me of being egoistic and rude to answer the phone with my name.

I tried to change it, but I didn't succeed very well. It was a habit that was very hard to change. To me it felt impolite to not introduce myself first, but just say "hello".

.

I always answer my work phone with "This is ..." so the person calling knows they've reached me. My personal phone, I answer with "Hello?" and really, why do we answer the phone with the "hello" as a question? With the advent of caller ID, we usually know who is calling. If it's a close friend I'll answer it, "Hi *insert name here*!" and they find that off-putting because they aren't expecting someone to answer the phone actually using their name, and expect to be the one to say, "Hi Priss! It's me." Hmm, now that I think about it, phones and phone etiquette is weird.

Weird and very culturally diverse.

You do seem to know how to handle yourself on the phone, though lol

(referring to your post before about dealing with prankster)

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

It's allowed for telemarketers and scammers under the exceptions clause. nod

.

my favorite method is to have a somewhat rehearsed speech prepared (i talk real loud, and real fast - they never get a word in edgewise. never) so if i make the mistake of actually answering up a solication call (i have caller ID), i say something like

"well, bill smith i'm on the no solicitation phone list but i see you're breaking the rules today and calling me to advertise your questionable product anyway so don't take this the wrong way but before you interrupted my day i was doing stuff that i now intend to get back to thanks so much for calling and i hope you have a great day." To be honest, I almost never answer my phone. I usually let calls go to voice mail, and I get back to the caller if and when I want to talk to them. redface

Oooh, I love this! I'll have to use it next time a pesky sales person calls me. I'm on the no-call list too, but unfortunately, that doesn't always seem to mean anything to some of these people.

RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
