Name 30 European cities (from the top of your head)

Especially non-European orgers! I'd like to see which cities stick in your mind and for what reason.

Don't be embarrassed if you can't. Most Europeans probably couldn't name more than 5 U.S. cities.

Never heard of a city of that name! Are you sure it's in Europe?

And no. 17 is probably meant to be Salzburg, isn't it? And no. 1 is Aachen!

That's quite an extensive list, with lots of cities I thought would be less popular overseas, like Aachen, Avignon, Lyon, Salzburg, Milan and Warsaw! Would be interesting why you remembered those!

1. aechen - Sorry "Aachen." I associate it with Charlemagne's tomb

2. amsterdam - a euro capital

3. antwerp -makes me think of watches (and oddly not watch cases or diamonds, which would make more sense)

4. avignon - "sur le pont d'avignon, on y danse, on y danse"

5. brussels - a euro capital

6. bruges - terribly picturesque town

7. barcelona - a major spanish city

8. bixelle - love the name of this relatively unknown Albanian town. I once thought it'd be a cool name for a baby girl (I'd have called her "Bix" for short), and I came across it upon research

9. copenhagen - a euro capital

10. london - how could I not think of london?

11. oxford - enjoys a certain cachet among the english-speaking academic world

12. manchester - I first knew this town as home to some interesting bands in the late 80s

13. liverpool - the beatles!

14. nice - i love mediterranean france

15. lyon - gorgeous alpine town

16. madrid - a euro capital; i'm visiting later this year

17. saltzberg - "salzburg." My daughter's favorite euro town; birthplace of mozart (with whom my daughter happens to share a birthday)

18. berlin - a euro capital

19. munich - first major city I ever visited in Germany

20. frankfurt - major financial hub; a former classmate lives there

23. athens - on my radar since I was a wee kid into Greek mythology

24. istanbul - near the top of my bucket list

25. aberdeen - no particular reason other than this being a major scottish city

26. rome - Like london, how could I not think of this town?

27. florence - beauty central

28. milan - a fashion capital, if unimpressive otherwise

You know your shit. I don't know anything about 90% of the U.S. cities I've listed in the other thread. Probably also because they are so young that there is not that much fundamental stuff to know about them yet. Or is it just plain ignorance?

Neither Google nor Google Earth have heard of Bixelle! How is this possible? Do you know more than Google? Or are you a liar and just made up that city? lol

I don't think you're ignorant at all. My familiarity with European cities -- aside from having visited some of them and spending an inordinate amount of time in my youth locked away with encyclopedias redface -- hinges on centuries, sometimes millennia, of history and influence. You're right in that U.S. cities simply don't have the same antiquity.

And on Bixelle: I swear I didn't make it up! It's at 41 degrees, 10', 34" N and 20 degrees, 3', 9" E. lol I've perhaps overstated it as a "city." It's apparently more of a small town in Elbasan district, Albania.

I'm afraid my approach for research is slightly flawed, in that only people interested in answering this kind of question (=interested in political geography) will post their response, so the results will hardly give a picture of what the average American can list.

Think so? I've become slightly convinced that they have the tendency to be absolutely beautiful at young age, but go massively downhill from 40 onwards (due to bad diet, mainly). And (young) people in general over there have a completely different outlook on material goods than people from where I live do, but that's understandable somehow.

And they're incredibly superstitious too, most of the time; believe in demons and shit like that!

Not necessarily, no. They're often extremely hard-working and loyal, but the downside is that they value property as status symbols and are therefore often extremely jealous (of the neighbours' car/house/garden). Furthermore, most of them are often very provincial, even if they live in cities, in that rumours about who did what to whom spread extremely quickly and efficiently.

These are Russian cities, and I've never heard a convincing argument as to why Russia shouldn't be considered Asian.
