In cases like author Edgar Allan Poe or musician Jerry Lee Lewis, who married their cousins ... I have no problem with that. For Poe in particular, his cousin was the only one he deeply loved and he was so traumatized by her death he never really recovered.

I don't have problems with normal people marrying distant cousins either (not first cousins. there's too much familial intimacy with first cousins).

I think there is a natural affinity toward people you are related to; and it can grow very strong if you have not been conditioned to have an aversion to it and to realize its for a purpose that is non-sexual. This is why laws exist ... if the affinity were not strong and comforting then there wouldn't be a need to regulate it.

This is why we hear those stories of people separated from birth dads/daughters, moms/son later meeting and falling in love, getting married -- sometimes completely unaware! Fascinating.

For the protection of the gene pool, however, I don't think it's a good idea. I think Darwin actually was in love with a relative (cousin?) and became upset when there was research that it might cause genetic abnormalities (I read about this story but I don't feel like going to research it again to give concrete details).

Besides the genetic reasons, I think when it comes to immediate family (mother, father, brother, sister) incest is detrimental because as I mentioned before, there is this precious, sacred thing as familial intimacy that is pure and protective and shouldn't be compromised and distorted by the introduction of sex and romance. Those nurturing relationships serve other purposes and shouldn't be sexualized.

Whenever I hear stories of incest , I find it intriguing. It's not repulsive to me. Sometimes it makes me sad because I know people have been maybe confused and mistook natural familial attraction for romantic attraction. It's not like people really discuss these things and say to the people involved ... what you're feeling is x and not y. Again, if it's distant cousins, I'm totally fine with it.

My fav director Bertolucci has a couple of movies about incest: "The Dreamers," where a brother and sister sort of enlist a third person to explore their incestuous feelings vicariously. Also in "Luna" a mother uses sex to reconnect with her son.

There was another movie I watched once where a family was secluded in the woods and only had each other. The father started a relationship with the daughter ... beating the brother to the punch.
