Saturday Blog..Bells palsy..Best Footballer turned Wrestler..Sonnen vs Silva..JR/Waterloo..NXT..JR's at WWEShop.com

We had an interesting question on Twitter Friday night @JRsBBQ regarding the greatest football player turned wrestler. It wasn't the greatest wrestler who previously played football. Based on the question, there is only one answer in my opinion and that is Bronko Nagurski. Not only was Nagurski a great college player on the division one level at Minnesota but he played/starred in the NFL (Chicago Bears) and made all pro 9 times at multiple positions and is in the INAUGURAL CLASS of the NFL HOF. Plus, Bronko beat Lou Thesz to become the NWA Champion when that title had significant meaning within the genre of pro wrestling.

Even though many modern stars such as Steve Austin, The Rock, Goldberg, Dr. Death, among many others, plus some of their predecessors including Wahoo McDaniel, Ernie Ladd, and Leo Nomellini all had varying success on the gridiron prior to becoming wrestlers, in my view none approached the accolades that Nagurski accomplished.

Ironically, many younger followers never heard of Bronko Nagurski who the college football defensive player of the year is named. Some even tried to win the friendly debate by saying that Steve McMichael was at the top of the list. Lawrence Taylor was arguably the best outside linebacker in the NFL but his one bout at Wrestlemania 11 does not a wrestling career make.

This topic might make for an interesting Legends Roundtable in the future that would coincide with football season or the Super Bowl.

Lots of Bells palsy awareness in the news recently as a result of a TV reporter in South Carolina getting hit with Bells while on a plane preparing to travel to meet friends to celebrate the afflicted, young lady's upcoming wedding. It can be a horrifying experience because the symptoms are similar to having a stroke but thankfully aren't as serious.

One of the most common side affects that many Bells palsy victims incur is depression. I always thought that I was mentally tough and even worked through the deaths of my own parents while continuing to work on the air including broadcasting a PPV in London after getting a call that my mother had passed away suddenly back in Oklahoma.

Getting Bells palsy for a TV personality can be, essentially, a career ender. The good news for most that within 90 days or so many Bells palsy victims are totally healed. A small handful, such as myself, do not heal completely. I've lost my smile literally but the irony of that matter is that I've lead a blessed life/career and couldn't be happier.

Looking back at some significant moments in my career I can tell you without question that leaving the 'Gorilla Position' at WrestleMania 15 in Philly that I was terrified. I've never been more afraid of anything in my professional life. I made the mistake of looking into a mirror that was near 'Gorilla' and I did not like what I saw. My face was hanging on one side, drool coming out of my mouth, one eye was larger than the other, my tongue was numb and I was mere seconds away from hearing my entrance music, Boomer Sooner, play before a sold out crowd and a worldwide PPV audience at our Super Bowl. I just knew that folks were going to gasp and that small kids would be startled a the sight of what I perceived to be a circus freak.

Lucky for me, I received a surprising, standing ovation from the fans in Philadelphia which was the best medicine that I could have ever been perscribed. I walked to ringside, passed Michael Cole in the aisle. tipped my hat to him and rejoined The King at ringside to call the first, Austin-Rock WrestleMania main event. I used one hand to hold the afflicted side of my face up so that my enunciation would be somewhat legible and just hoped that I could do the main event justice. Both athletes were special to me personally and it was, after all, WrestleMania. I may have slurred some words that night but I never allowed Bells palsy to define me. My passion for my job and the business that I love 'submitted' the Bells on that March night in 1999.

Working through our pesonal adversities is an option that we are all blessed with as long as we don't turn in our jerseys, IE quit. Bottom line is one can't be on any 'team' in this unpredictable 'game' of life without a jersey which signifies that we are still in the 'game' and that we are still 'competing.'

Who is the break out performer in WWE so farin 2012? Is there really any debate? It has to be AJ who has taken the opportunities provided her, the creative input she's received and has made her role bigger than I'm sure many perceived that it would ever become. Obviously, AJ waited for her opportunity and maximized her minutes no matter how few or how insignificant that they may have seemed at the time.

Happy to see Tyson Kidd's success on Smackdown Friday night. Tyson has seemingly found his personality, so to speak, to go along with his significant in ring skills. I love his in ring persona, which will/should only get bigger and better, and the skill set that the Calgary Kid brings to the table. A recent NXT bout vs. Michael McGillicutty gave me all that I needed to see on both young athletes who have wrestling DNA running in their veins.

Sad days lie ahead at Penn State University in the wake of the emails that have surfaced among PSU administrators in the Sandusky controversy. Just when many thought the worst days had subsided, here comes the email evidence/info. JoePa's legacy will be forever tarnished in this horrific ordeal and the civil lawsuits that are coming will keep this issue in the public eye for the foreseeable future. The beloved football program in Happy Valley is going to have to do the greatest recruiting job in recent years any where to be found to re-establish the once proud program and, arguably, the focal point of the university.

It amazes me that many that follow me on Twitter are somewhat unaware of my career prior to 1993 when I joined WWE. Some don't know that I had been in the biz 19 years before arriving in WWE. The reason that I bring this up is that we are getting many, positive comments from fans who are enjoying the WWE produced 'Best of the Clash of Champions' DVD. On this DVD, I worked with Tony Schiavone, Gordon Solie and Bob Caudle, among others, in some of the most enjoyable experiences of my career. WCW has many great memories for me until about 1992.

Now that WWE has purchased the Mid South Wrestling library, fans will get to step even farther back in time as I expect WWE to produce a Mid South DVD at some point in the future. Bill Watts produced one of the best, one hour, weekly and episodic, wrestling shows ever with the sole focus of selling tickets to live events which meant getting the stars established and embellishing the personal issues that existed.

Been asked...don't know the answer as to where NXT airs. It doesn't air in the USA at this point in time...It well could in the future. Beginning with the fourth or fifth show, Byron Saxton and William Regal handle the bulk of the announcing while I join them for the weekly, main events.

We're back in Orlando on Thursday July 12 at Full Sail University for another taping with tickets available only at the Full Sail box office. It's an awesome value for all the entertainment that one receives and the taping starts at 6:30 and ended the last taping at around 9:30. Great, intimate atmosphere of around 500 fans or so.

Excited to return to Waterloo, Iowa on July 13-14 for the Dan Gable Museum Wrestling Hall of Fame festivities including a indy wrestler tryout camp with Jerry Brisco Friday afternoon July 13. I could spend hours in the Gable museum and likely will. Big, indy show Friday night in Waterloo that Brisco and I will be observing. I have tremendous respect for the great people in Iowa who truly respect all aspects of the grappling genre. Plus, Bob Stoops was a Hawkeye.

Who do I want to see as the new GM of Raw and/or Smackdown? I've got no dog in the hunt but I know that isn't a role that I would embrace or with which I would be be good.

Thoughts on Chael Sonnen? He's polarizingly talented. Is Chael headed for his execution or his career defining exaltation when he faces the dangerous Anderson Silva next week on UFC PPV? Silva is cutting wrestling promos, gasp, about what he's going to do to Sonnen after Silva barely escaping their last outing. If Sonnen wrestles and doesn't lose his sanity as he seemingly did in the 5th round of the last Sonnen-Silva fight, Chael has a viable shot. Or, Silva's standup could well beat Sonnen into a bloody pulp early in the fight. I know that I have to see this PPV. This one is as much about the personal issue aspect of the fight to me as it is the title.

Here's a telltale sign of a young fan on Twitter, they actually want to see a 'match' between @michaelcole and me...again. That's like seeing numerous replays of a baseball catcher taking a foul ball off the cup over and over. How about we clamor for the wrestlers to get the TV time? You know, the one's that actually know how to perform and that are athletic. As Cole would say, "Stop the pain."

Wrestling pet peeve? I have many. I'm old school. Stubborn. Love fundamentals and physicality. Strongly dislike feeble attempts at canned humor. Bad acting takes me right out of the moment and encourages me to reach for the remote.

Damn! Yet another JR blog!

Monday Blog..Random Thought Mania....Things that are Annoying...Grill w/ JR's at WWEShop.com

Mon, 07/02/2012 - 11:15am — J.R.

Here's hoping that everyone had a great weekend and will continue to enjoy the 4th of July festivities in the USA celebrating America's birthday. Here's the link to browse JR's products at http://www.wweshop.com/Category/JimRoss. Random thoughts....

Enjoyed the film 'Ted' this weekend with the bride. 'Ted' isn't a family movie as it's rated R but it's funny as hell. Highly suggest that you check it out if you like smart, non-PC humor. @sethmacfarlane is a true genius.

Our potential, new distributor in the UK @americansoda is very close to finalizing their first order which will make buying JR's products MUCH easier in the UK.

I'd expect the live audience in Laredo, Texas to be a hot one tonight for Monday Night Raw. Smackdown emanates Tuesday LIVE from Corpus Christi which, if I'm not mistaken was one of the numerous sites that "JR" was canned on RAW.

Things I'm "over' today...and NOT in a bitter way...cleaning up random thoughts..

Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes marital issues including lame statements from "their representatives." Most of us common folk could give a damn.

Any thing to do with NBA star Dwight Howard. Rich, crybaby athlete story..again.

Anderson Cooper talking about his 'Gayness." Is the CNN journalist's sexual preference a story these days? To me, it's a non issue.

Folks thinking that I can answer every shipping question that they may have re: WWEShop.com when WWEShop has a customer service number and a Twitter account @WWEShop.

Past their prime wrestlers who still won't look in the mirror and admit that they blew their earnings by doing no financial planning including paying their taxes. Paying quarterly means paying four times per year not once very twenty five years. Same goes for other "I had it all and lost it athletes" who lived beyond their means.

The semi regular talk of forming a wrestling union by some pundits who love to tickle the keyboards in the name of doing something "good" for the "boys." As I have said many times, trying to unionize wrestlers is a complete waste of time and it always has been. Rampant egos, basic ignorance of the topic and distrust of one's peers would never allow it to happen.

Twitter followers asking me in depth booking questions re: TNA. I can't give any answer that won't be over analyzed so why even go there? More importantly, I do not watch TNA regularly so any opinion that I might have would not be an informed one and it would only provide for more. manufactured dirt.

Explaining that I simply can't answer "What's your favorite match of all time?" I honestly don't know.

How any one could think that Bronko Nagurski isn't the best football player to become a wrestler is pet coon goofy.. We're not talking about the best wrestler who was a former footballer. Nagurski's storied football career in college and with the Chicago Bears in the NFl PLUS being in the NFL's first ever HOF class should end any argument or debate at least in my eyes. Let's put it this way how many pro wrestlers are in the NFL Hall of Fame? Short list.....Leo Nomellini would be a close, number two behind Nagurski.

MMA hard core fans who love to blast me every time that I write about UFC as if I have no ability to read or study the genre. UFC is a legit sport that I've studied much like football. Even had a college sports guy Tweet me the other day that he couldn't believe a 'wrestling guy' was commenting on the college football playoff system that commences in two years. What an idiot.

The inane use of the term "PUSH" from fans who likely don't know what it truly means and feel that "PUSH" is the magic word that cures all ills with why one of their favorites isn't in the spotlight. The overall talent base in the business in general is so thin that I ASSURE you that if athletes distinguish themselves regularly enough that they will be noticed and utilized.

Arguing with some emailers that a Wellness Policy is essential. I'm not against two strikes and out being the benchmark.

Do you know every WWE star's Twitter handle or who has one and who doesn't? Me neither. Google it or search on WWE.com. Lots of faux accounts out there.

The never ending desire for dirt or negativity that many seek from me on Twitter @JRsBBQ or via our Q&A's. I'm asked daily to essentially throw talents, especially former talents, under the bus for being screw ups. To expose them as being drunks, etc and irresponsible human beings. This is essentially where our society is these days.

I get these Tweets daily, will @steveaustinBSR or @Goldberg ever return to WWE? I'm wondering why those asking don't Tweet the talents themselves. Not everyone that has had a wrestling career wants to return to the grind. It's not that glamorous. Same goes for @DaveBautista who's also building a film career.

Pro wrestling bias. I strongly dislike this unflattering trait that many in our society have. Perhaps that's why acting, for some wrestlers, is a viable alternative for performers leaving the business. Society isn't geared to afford many other opportunities for former wrestlers without them having a marketable skill set and especially without an education.

I'm asked daily if I am ever going to broadcast MMA or football, for example, and although I appreciate the sentiment, there is no way in hell that any legit sport is ever going to touch a long established, tenured broadcaster that has as many years in the sports entertainment aka in professional wrestling as me. Plus, I'm 60 years old. Although the matter is frustrating at times, I love what I'm doing, I'm dedicated to the business and loyal to my company. I'm one of the lucky one's who has a job that doesn't feel like work.

Who's the next big thing in WWE Developmental? I don't kknow nor does any one else. Any answer would merely be an educated guess. But the cupboards aren't bare.

Whew...glad we got that off our chest. LOL. Have a great day and countinue to count your many blessings. Thanks for supporting our family's efforts at http://www.wweshop.com/Category/JimRoss. Grilling time is here!

Visit our Q&A section and leave me a question. Thanks!

WWE officials want Bruno Sammartino to be the headliner for the 2013 Hall of Fame class from the New York City area. WWE has already contacted Sammartino about being inducted but we do not know his response to them yet.

Sammartino's past with WWE is a troubled one. He hasn't worked with them since the late 1980's and has been very critical of Vince McMahon and the WWE product over the years. Sammartino has turned down several projects from WWE over the years, declined invitations to shows and spoken out against them in the media.

So far this year, only one other name has been rumored for the 2013 Hall of Fame - Rena "Sable" Lesnar. The former WWE Women's Champion was rumored around WrestleMania time this year when it became clear that Brock Lesnar, her husband, would be performing at WrestleMania 29.

source: FWOnline

Bruno Sammartino? Definitely a legend and should've BEEN in the HOF already. But I will personally burn McMahon's balls off with a Bic lighter if he doesn't induct Randy Savage this coming year!! mad

I gotta believe that if Savage was going in, it would have been this year.

As for Bruno...Vince has been trying to put him in for years and Bruno refuses to cooperate.

Here's hoping Bruno sticks to his guns.

I find it kind of ignorant that Vince would vouch for Bruno but he's too hesitant to give Randy his props - regardless of his personal problems. I don't think Bruno will ever change his tune.

The fact that Vince would even think to put in people like Sable and Tammy Sytch before the Macho Man is just ridiculous. It's like Cornette said (paraphrased): "Their hall is a joke. Whatever city WrestleMania is in and whatever DVD their pushing determines who gets in."

I know we've been over this, but that Stephanie rumor (or something similar) has got to be true. It makes no sense otherwise. Now...I wonder...after Vince passes and Steph and HHH start really running shit, do you think Macho goes in then???

Correct me if I'm wrong...isnt Koko B Ware in the WWF Hall? disbelief

I never heard it described as "molesting", I heard "took her virginity", as in taking advantage of a teenage girl's crush. Same thing, but I think you know what I mean.

I didnt believe it at first either, but everyone at WWF knows this story has been out there for years...no one will touch it, either to deny or confirm. Vince and everyone else know that a lot of people believe this is the reason Macho is being held out. To still hold Macho out (he died and it was covered on every major news outlet!) and never deny this being the reason leads me to believe that there has to be something to it.

Who knows...regardless, Macho BELONGS in every Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame on God's green earth.

Yet ANOTHER J.R. blog!! smile

http://www.jrsbarbq.com/b...stard-rock

Tuesday Blog..JR's RAW Thoughts..Andy Griffith Memories..Who stole the show on Raw??..JR's Main Event Mustard Rocks!!

Tue, 07/03/2012 - 1:16pm — J.R.

Thanks for stopping by our site and I hope that you will share it with others. We're getting ready for our July 4th grill fest here in Norman in the comforts of our backyard. We always appreciate those that help support our passion at http://www.wweshop.com/Category/JimRoss. We make grilling better. Next.....

Things that stood out for me on Monday Night Raw included:

Opening segment with promo work from several culminating with action. I thought that Chris Jericho and Daniel Bryan stole the verbal show in the first segment of the broadcast.

The 8 man tag saw several talents receive excellent TV exposure but the match moved so fast and with multiple moving parts that when it was over I wasn't sure what I saw. I think I remember Santino and his 'Cobra.' Yikes...I've never written that before. smile

For my money AJ stole the show Monday night. Her crazy train, dementia riddled, girl next door persona is working. AJ makes Glenn Close's character in 'Fatal Attraction' look like Paula Deen.

Big Show's march to dominance is taking 'giant' steps. Monster villains in the genre have worked effectively for generations when strategically positioned.

Paul Heyman is SO easily to dislike and so is hisTV persona....just kidding.

RAW 1000 is shaping up to be huge in St Louis. Lesnar added to the impressive list of those that will apparently be there live. For those that ask daily on Twitter @JRsBBQ, I'm not scheduled to attend at this time.

No two in WWE have more in ring chemistry than do Punk and Bryan however Sheamus and Ziggler do some impressive in ring work when paired.

Not sure that mic thing for AW is going to work but perhaps it's annoying enough to help his antagonist persona. I assure you that AW CAN talk.

Always enjoy see Tyson Kidd getting valuable minutes of TV time on RAW. Too many fans over think the various scenarios of the fact that that simply if one is fortunate enough to get on RAW and to leave with a memorable moment or performance it's a good thing. Yes, the Calgary Kid is maximizing his minutes.

Did I detect a little friction perhaps building between WWE Champion CM Punk and WWE lead dog John Cena? (Is a lead dog the same as 'Bull of the Woods?')

When is the last time that a female garnered the closing shot on a Raw episode? AJ's image was the last one we saw from the arena Monday night. I remember the RAW that Trish and Lita closed the show in a memorable bout. What else from the ladies has closed the show on RAW?

The tune in spot that technically closed the show Monday night was awesome.

Are you watching the live, Smackdown tonight with the Great American Bash theme? I'm hoping for some JR's BBQ Sauce product placement if they do any grilling.

Check out my latest contribution to WWE.com and their classics section at http://www.wwe.com/classics/jim-ross/ where I continue the series on writing about my various broadcast partners over the years this time focusing on Jim Cornette and Jesse Ventura. I attempt to explain why I felt that Jesse and I underdelivered.

I have to catch up with my friend @RealKevinNash two movies that are currently playing, 'Magic Mike' and 'Rock of Ages' in the next few days. My wife and I saw 'Ted' Sunday and it was hilarious but not for kids hence the TV14 rating.

A new, Legends Roundtable should hit WWE On Demand very soon and the subject is Monday Night Raw Memories. I know that it's airing in advance of the July 23 Raw 1000 show or so I was told. Keep an eye on @WWEClassics for all the low down.

One of my long time and most memorable and famous baby sitters died this morning....the legendary Andy Griffith. Being an only child, I spent my fair share of time watching TV as a child of parents who both worked out of the home. The Andy Griffith Show was a household staple at the Ross'. By creating his show and being executive producer, Andy was the owner of the territory, the booker and the top hero star who always prevailed in the end with a life lesson and a clearly defined moral of the story that all came within the confines of his 30 minute show. Arguably, without Andy Griffith, World Championship Wrestling with Gordon Solie and the Atlanta Braves becoming the self proclaimed "America's Team" Ted Turner's TBS would not have enjoyed as much success in the early days of cable. I'm sure at some point over the July 4th holiday that I will devote some time to the late, Mr. Griffith's show and may throw in a little 'Matlock' for good measure. We lost a slice of Americana early today when Andy Griffith passed away at age 86. RIP Sir and thanks for entertining me and keeping me out of mischief over the years.

TV producers of today in any genre can learn from Andy Griffith's successful formula. Keep TV simple with easily to follow plots that include interesting characters with which one can make an emotional investment. Seemingly every character on the Andy Griffith show was cast perfectly as if their TV personas were extensions of their own natural personality.

Ideas...use JR's Main Event Mustard in devil eggs and as a base for a salad dressing. Our mustard when mixed with sweet pickel relish also makes an amazing topping for grilled hot dogs and burgers. It's high quality honey mustard with jalapeno mash so it's both sweet and spicy.

Hottest selling items right now at http://www.wweshop.com/Category/JimRoss is JR's Cookbook, personally signed by me...not a bogus autograph...and our All Purpose Seasoning which also is a kick ass dry rub. Our seasoning is amazing and allows you to essentially use ONE seasoning to really add personality and taste to virually any dish whether it be outside on the grill or in the kitchen.

Thanks for stopping by and please follow me on Twitter @JRsBBQ.

Bruno Sammartino Rejects WWE HOF 2013 Induction Offer

WWE reached out to Bruno Sammartino about being inducted in the Hall of Fame next year, but declined.

It was originally reported that Triple H was the one who reached out to Sammartino, and that Sammartino was not impressed with Triple H's approach.

Sal Correnete, Sammartino's representative, issued the following statement:

"It has come to our attention that someone has claimed that Bruno was unimpressed with Triple H. That is an absolutely false statement Bruno had no issue what so ever with Triple H. He liked Triple H and enjoyed their conversation but for reasons personal to Bruno he has decided not to accept the induction in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM IS THE REFUSAL A REFLECTION ON TRIPLE H or his presentation or conversations with Bruno"

For those who didn't or couldn't catch the WWE shows this week...

Raw Results (July 2, 2012):

Last night’s WWE Raw featured Paul Heyman announcing that Brock Lesnar will officially answer Triple H’s Summer Slam challenge on July 23rd (the 1,000th edition of Raw). In addition, both Doink the Clown and Diamond Dallas Page both made their return to WWE television. Finally, the ongoing love triangle between AJ, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan continued. Here are the match results from last night:

1. United States Champion Santino Marella, Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston and R-Truth, and Christian defeat David Otunga, Cody Rhodes, Darren Young and Titus O’Neil via pin fall when Marella pinned Otunga after interference from Brodus Clay.

2. Alberto Del Rio vs. Sin Cara never happens as ADR attacks Cara before the match and slams on the arm bar.

3. World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus and AJ defeat Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero via pin fall when AJ pins Vickie.

4. Heath Slater defeats Doink the Clown via pin fall. After the match, Diamond Dallas Page hit the ring and laid Slater out with a Diamond Cutter.

5. Big Show defeats Kane via pin fall in a No DQ match.

6. Tyson Kidd defeats Tensai via pin fall.

7. Chris Jericho and Daniel Bryan battle WWE Champion CM Punk and John Cena to a no contest when AJ came to the ring and pulled a table out from underneath the ring. After Bryan and Punk stopped AJ from jumping through the table, both men ended up going through it.

Smackdown Live! Results (July 3, 2012):

To celebrate Independence Day, World Wrestling Entertainment presented SmackDown Live, otherwise known as the Great American Bash. The show opened in the backstage area with several WWE superstars having a picnic, only to conclude with Kane lighting the grill with his "magic."

Alberto Del Rio In Ring Segment

The No. 1 contender for the world heavyweight title came out to talk to the WWE Universe about his title opportunity at Money in the Bank. He went around ringside telling the fans that they are illegal aliens and shouldn't be allowed there. After trying to throw a fan out of the arena, Sheamus arrived and attacked Del Rio. Del Rio got the upper hand with the help of Ricardo Rodriguez and the segment ended with Sheamus getting slammed under the hood of Del Rio's car.

Great Khali and Layla vs. Antonio Cesaro and Aksana

This was an awful mixed tag match that saw Layla get the pin on Aksana.

Cody Rhodes vs. Christian

Last week, Rhodes was part of the losing team in Money in the Bank qualifier match and demanded a second chance. The WWE Board of Directors allowed the second chance and Teddy Long put him in against intercontinental champion, Christian.

This was an incredible match between two of the best workers in the sport. The finish came when Rhodes countered the Killswitch and connected with Cross Rhodes to get the victory.

Alex Riley vs. Dolph Ziggler

Listening to the announce team talk like Riley ever had a chance was terrible. Ziggler got the win with ease and advances to the Money in the Bank match.

Michael Cole Interview with AJ

One night after AJ shoved CM Punk on top of Daniel Bryan through a table, Cole asked why she did what she did. Cole called her a "troubled little girl," and said she was playing out a fantasy with two guys that he doesn't get what she sees in. Bryan then appeared and called Cole a sexist and emotionally abusive bully. He said to AJ that he forgave her for sending him through the table because he knew only Punk was supposed to be hurt. Punk then made his appearance and told AJ that he won't pretend that that he was never sent through a table. He told AJ that she needs professional help and that he cared about her well-being. After a brief interruption from Bryan, AJ stepped in between the two men and kissed Bryan, which prompted Punk to walk out of the ring. AJ then chased and kissed Punk, giving the term sloppy seconds a new definition.

Santino Marella, Sgt. Slaughter and Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Drew McIntyre, Hunico and Camacho

Another terrible match that saw Marella get the win with the Cobra.

Curt Hawkins vs. Ryback

Another squash match with Ryback getting the quick win.

Battle Royal

The winner of the battle royal would be the guest General Manager of next week's SmackDown. The final two competitors left in the match were Kane and Zack Ryder. Ryder gets the win after ducking below Kane and pulling down on the top rope.

It's actually pretty good, IMO.

Coming from someone who was a fan of Giant Bernard's when he was in New Japan, he sucks in the WWE.

I don't know if the reason why I enjoyed him so much in Japan was because he was a part of a Tag Team and didn't have to carry the load 100%.

Yes, the Lord Tensai gimmick sucks, but he hasn't done anything to show that he was worthy of bringing and and getting such a big push right off the bat.

Now, Tyson Kidd on the other hand is a guy who's been busting his ass for years, and he's finally getting a little bit of shine. He's the most underrated guy in the WWE, IMO.

He's one of the top 5 best wrestlers in the WWE, and when they actually give him promo time, he's not terrible.

I hope this is the start of something different for him. I hope this is the start of a midcard push, because I think he'd make a great I-C or U.S. Champion.

I agree re: Tyson Kidd. Every single time I've seen him in the ring, it's a good match, regardless of who his opponent is. Him in the MITB match should be interesting. In fact, the Smackdown MITB match should be much more interesting than Raw's, mainly because of the newer blood participating.

Tyson Kidd...Tyson Kidd...I wouldnt know him if I saw him walk right past me. Isnt he somehow connected to Bret Hart?

I've been interested in tuning in to see what the big deal is about AJ. I keep reading how good she has gotten (especially this week...according to all dirt sheets, she "stole the show" on RAW this week). Funny...I've never even heard her speak. lol

Maybe I need to tune in. Which show's better...RAW or Smackdown?

Yeah, he pretty much grew up with the Harts. He was supposedly the last guy to graduate from The Dungeon. He's been with Natalya pretty much since they were little kids.

He's really connected with that family.

Maria Kanellis Gets Involved In Twitter War With Former WCW Announcer Mark Madden

A Twitter feud between former WCW announcer Mark Madden and current Ring of Honor star/former WWE star Mike Mondo has went on for a few days now and resulted in former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis getting involved. Maria got involved after her boyfriend, ROH star Mike Bennett, defended Mondo and ROH, starting his own Twitter feud with Madden.

Maria appeared to have enough after this tweet from Madden to Bennett, mentioning her relationship with CM Punk:

"@ROHMikeBennett Does yer chick miss the big time? Does she miss Punk? She will..."

Maria replied to Madden:

"hahahahaha..... You are ridiculous. Grow up. I dated punk like 4 years ago. Are you in high school? I'll make my own big time. I'm not gonna ride on some guys coat tails. I'll take loyal and sweet over money and pain any day. You aren't worth any more of my time. If I want someone more intelligent to fight with it will be my 3 year old niece. Have a wonderful positive day.... Oh wait, that's what I have everyday."

Madden replied:

"Right. I wrote an analytical column about ROH & whole promotion attacked me. But I'm the immature 1."

Maria's reply to Madden directly:

"Here is what analytical means: Analytical skill is the ability to visualize, articulate, and solve both complex and uncomplicated problems and concepts and make decisions that are sensical based on available information. Have you looked at the wrestling business as a whole? Do you have facts from the information available? Did you solve a problem? Of course not. You just ran your mouth. And then you attack my personal life? You are a sad uninformed human. Blocked."

Madden later wrote:

"@MariaLKanellis Maria just part of the diva assembly line. Every1 has been totally interchangeable. NEXT! Meaningless job."

To which Maria replied:

"Please tell that to my 119000 followers, the Make a Wish Foundation, the hospitals I've visited, the division of ladies wrestling in Nashville I run, the war veterans I've met, and everyone that has ever send me a letter. And didn't you just retweet another part of the diva assembly line? No one is interchangeable. Everyone can make a difference. Even you have a purpose and that purpose is, that I have proved you wrong."

Maria later ended it with the following rant, mentioning her WWE departure, saying she was bored and under appreciated:

"I think it is funny when someone continues to insult you when they think you care. Insult me all you want and it won't hurt my feelings but if you say things that are insulting to my friends, family, my passion, or boyfriend I get pissed. I know where I'm at in my career. I don't need some sexist writers approval. 'you've seen me naked.' haha.... You and millions of others which allowed me to help my parents with their house. By the way it's only a photo. I choose to not resign with WWE not because I didn't love it but because I was bored. I was under appreciated. I could still be there if I wanted. I could have continued to play dumb. But I want more. Not more fame/money but more creativity and control. I love my fans but I don't need to be seen by millions to feel important. I am already important to my family. I love what I am doing at ROH and it makes to happy. Keep your 'big money' I will take my sanity.(The money isn't great anyways. I make more doing trailers for films. Oh yes I do trailers for films, swordfight, produce reality shows, and write scripts. But I am a failure? Hahahahaha....) You, Mr. Writer don't understand wrestling or success. There is no formula. ROH has been with Sinclair for a year. And been around for over 10. We are doing more and more media all the time, trying different things, different champs, and things you wouldn't understand. An artist isn't great until they are great. Who knows when a break out will happen. Everyone pooped all over Punk and now LOOK. He is running things. Haven't you ever heard of actors wearing banana suits for a restaurant until they get that big break? Maybe you can get called at 18 or 35. But if you quit you will never get called. Maybe Ring of Honor is on that breaking point but if we stop 'working hard' we will never make it. I apparently after WWE was supposed to get fat and hooked on drugs but wait I DIDN'T!! I'm in better shape and happy. f--k drugs/alcohol!! I'll take the gym and building projects. Keep treating your column like it is fact. We will keep proving you wrong. P.S. WWE superstars have plenty to say but they can't. I can and will. Watch my show afterbuzztv. By the way over 100,000 people watch. GFY"

Backstage News on Kidd & More

- As seen on SmackDown last night, Ryback picked up a win over Curt Hawkins. It sounds like Hawkins and his partner Tyler Reks aren't finished with Ryback after they commented on Twitter last night.

Hawkins: "Well that meathead @Ryback22 clearly cheated tonight... Good news is I have an in with the SmackDown GM next week, we go way back."

Reks: "Think @TheCurtHawkins would be mad if he knew the coin we tossed for the match was rigged? No worries, we're not done with @Ryback22 yet."

- The WWE crews are off for the 4th of July and Thursday but will return to action on Friday with a live event in Amarillo, Texas. David Otunga noted that he will be in Boston today as his fiancee Jennifer Hudson performs on CBS' "Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular."

- A WWE source indicates that there is something big planned for Tyson Kidd. His qualifying for Money in the Bank and the push on RAW last night are apparently the start of something bigger for Kidd.

TNA’s Austin Aries even better the second time around

Main eventing TNA’s Destination X PPV July 8 at Universal Studios Orlando

By Scott Fishman

Miami Herald Writer

Austin Aries is making the most of his second run in TNA Impact Wrestling.

He has climbed his way to the top, competing in the main event against world champion Bobby Roode on Sunday, July 8 at the TNA Destination X pay-per-view from Universal Studios Orlando.

The longest reigning X Division champion in history returned to the company a year ago with a renewed passion for the business.

“I think right before I came back to TNA, I kind of made a decision to step away from wrestling,” Aries said during a recent conference call. “I think coming to that decision helped me gain some perspective, and when this new opportunity presented itself, I really walked into it holding nothing back. I really put all I had into it and let the chips fall where they may. I think everything comes down to the right opportunity at the right time.

The Austin Aries who left the promotion in 2007 is not the same one who returned in 2011.

“Comparing my two runs with TNA, maybe the first time around the timing wasn’t right or the opportunities weren’t quite what I was hoping for,” Aries said. “On the second time around they gave me some rope either to climb the ladder or hang myself. So far I’ve been climbing…

“Honestly when I walked in, I didn’t have any expectations. I just knew I had opportunity and took it one step at a time. What I did try to have this time around was patience and let my work speak for itself. Let the opportunities present themselves and then take advantage of them. I don’t think I would have foreseen myself being in this situation after a year in the company, but I’ve always been confident in my abilities and appreciate the opportunity to prove my talent and that I belong at the top of the card.”

Interesting enough, before his latest stint in TNA began, he had auditioned for the newest season of WWE’s reality competition “Tough Enough.” He wasn’t chosen, but if his success is any indication, everything happens for a reason.

“It was basically an audition for a television show,” Aries said. “People kind of want to [make more if it] more than it is, but I was dealing with a talent agency. I wasn’t dealing directly with the company itself and the decisions that were made were made through them. I’ve done other stuff outside of wrestling where I’ve gone to auditions for different roles and parts and didn’t get them. It has nothing to do with acumen as an actor or, in this case, as a wrestler, but more or less what they are looking for to fill those roles.

“It was one of those situations where I was asked if I wanted to throw my hat in the ring. I had really nothing to lose, but it certainly wasn’t something I was pinning my hopes on or that devastated me. Anyone who is an actor in the entertainment business, you go out for a lot of different roles. Sometimes you get the part, and sometimes you don’t.”

When the call from TNA came, Aries was ready.

“You don’t always get second chances,” Aries said. “I thought it would have been nice to just go back and see the opportunity that was there. At the very least, I would leave things on a better note. Honestly, at that point, it was a great opportunity and a payday. I figured I had nothing going on that week, so why not? I had nothing to lose.”

It’s been a meteoric rise for the self-proclaimed “Greatest Man That Ever Lived,” ever since he signed a new contract. With every passing week, Aries proved himself to be one of most entertaining performers on the microphone and in the ring. The fans began to get behind the breakout star because he not only could talk the talk, but back it up when the bell sounded.

“I can be a polarizing figure,” Aries said. “It has been something said about me over time, which means I garner a reaction. At the end of the day, that is what we want, whether it is a positive or negative reaction. If people are indifferent, they are probably not too willing to see you perform. Everything is how you structure things and where you kind of point your ire at. Right now, facing a guy like Bobby Roode who is universally disliked by the fan base makes it easier to get behind me, just like it was against a guy like Bully Ray.”

Aries says he thoroughly enjoyed working with Bully Ray, which was a sort of a David and Goliath situation.

“I knew it was going to be a physical test. I knew it was going to be a mental test, and I like to think I passed both of those,” he said. “Bully Ray isn’t one of those guys who blows a lot of smoke up your a--. He will tell you exactly how it is, whether you like it or don’t like it. One thing you know is you will get an honest opinion. So it was important to me to go into that match, more than anything else, that when we walked out of that match that he had respect for me. I’d like to think that he did. I thought we had a great match. It was physical. I think we both pushed each other a little bit, and the result was very entertaining on all accounts.”

In less than a month of arriving on the scene, Aries found himself the X Division champion. Since then, he has battled all challengers, and in the process, brought the gold back to prominence.

“I think not everybody is equipped to be a titleholder or a champion,” Aries said. “ I like to think whatever belt I held throughout my career, I’ve carried professionally and with a certain amount of respect that people can look at it and say, ‘Well, all right, this title belt has worth. It means something.’ I had some issues with belts that I’ve held from the people who have held them before me, but what you go out there and do is put your best foot forward. You try to make sure every time you walk out that people feel like they are seeing the main event.

“Hopefully, we are going to do that again on July 8th at Destination X with Bobby Roode. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to be in the main event against the world heavyweight champion. I think that belt has a lot of worth right now. It should be a great match. Hopefully, the best man wins.”

Aside from signing his second TNA contract and winning the X Division championship, Aries believes fighting Rood will be atop his highlights in the promotion. It has taken Aries almost 12 years to get where he is today, working everywhere from Ring of Honor to Dragon Gate USA. He believes all of the ups and downs have prepared him for whatever comes his way.

“The guys who are the most successful tend to be the guys who have honed their craft in a lot of different places,” Aries said. “I think there is a certain experience level that you are only going to get from working the indie scene or working different styles of wrestling in front of different types of crowds in different places. It’s very hard to learn in a bubble and be put through all of the different situations that you can be put in once you reached a certain level.

“For all the different experiences that I’ve had and places I’ve got to wrestle with guys who have different styles and philosophies to working with the promoters and the way they want to run their companies, I think all the bits and pieces of it can accumulate a wider range of knowledge for the business. I think if you look at the guys right now at the top of their companies, they all have similar backgrounds.”

The time in the business and hard work has also allowed Aries to appreciate the spotlight, which includes standing in the ring with likes of Hulk Hogan.

“It can be surreal at times if you let it,” Aries said.

“If you let that inner child out and think about it. I mentioned to a friend last week that my 10-year-old self would be giddy at the fact that Hulk Hogan is telling me how great I am in the middle of a wrestling ring. If you told me that when I was reading the news magazines at the grocery store when I was 10, I wouldn’t have believed it. Obviously guys like Sting and Hulk Hogan and Kurt Angle have accomplished so much in this business. They are so well respected that when you get compliments from them, it holds more weight than when it comes from a lot of other people.

His past run in TNA was also part of his journey to the top. His standout moments during that period was as Austin Starr, a member of Paparazzi Productions working with Kevin Nash.

“I have nothing but fond memories of Kevin the whole time we did the whole Paparazzi Production thing, and I was associated with him,” Aries said.

“I think Kevin is a great guy. I think he is very smart businesswise to what we do. I felt nothing but positive vibes from him. Honestly, I look back and a lot of the guys who were doing it with me at the same time would agree that those Paparazzi Production skits were some of the most fun I had doing wrestling.

“It was really just a bunch of guys going out and creating moments and having a good time playing off each other. I think Kevin was a big part of that. I think there was always the perception that he didn’t like smaller guys or used certain situations to better himself only, but I never got the sense of that. There were a couple of situations where he had our back and wanted to make sure that we were all doing the best we could, and the company was doing the best they could for us.”

Aries is doing the best he can for the X Division. He is proud of all he has accomplished as its champion.

“It’s crazy when I think about how long I’ve had this thing,” Aries said.

“Unfortunately, because of some injuries and some departures, I don’t think we have had the numbers in the X Division that we had hoped to have as far as more competition for me. I think that is something that is going to change, which means the future X Division champions are going to have a hard time keeping the belt as long.”

Instead of just handing over the X Division title for a world championship shot or refusing the crack at Roode to keep his gold, Aries gave general manager Hogan the idea of an “Option C.” He would relinquish the championship if whoever is the X Division champion during Destination X gets the same opportunity. This in effect makes the title worth increase more than ever.

“Now with the ‘Option C’ that I put out there, this belt is going to be a hot commodity right around Destination X,” Aries said.

“Everyone is going to be gunning for this belt, so it’s going to have even more importance. I think it’s going to be harder to keep it around people’s waist…

“It does give me some bragging rights that nobody has beaten me for the championship, and I relinquished it. It is something that is quite rare. When the opportunity was presented to me like getting to wrestle Bobby Roode at Destination X…As far as being the longest reigning X Division champion, it is pretty remarkable in some ways when you think about it because of all the men who have held the title over the years.

“The competition of the X Division and where you had a lot of top caliber superstars and wrestlers in the division that made it more competitive. The time I came into the company they were kind of rebooting the X Division and injecting new blood so to speak. I think I came at a time where it didn’t have the top competition it had historically…Some of the guys who I have faced I would have liked to do more with. Some of the guys who I would have liked to get in there with were injured or weren’t here. So hopefully, I’ll be able to get in the ring with them and prove my worth against them as well…It’s really time to step out and step up.”

Considering what is on the horizon, it seems Aries is doing just that.
