The one movie I refuse to watch. And I went to see The Passion Of The Christ. My sister told me that after a group went to go see that movie they had to have drinks and tell each other they loved each other.

Irreversible

ooh wee. That movie I saw. And yes, it was almost gratuitous.

I'll give a synopsis for those who haven't seen "One Guy One Cup" aka "One Guy One Jar"...

Basically a guy decides to put a glass jar up his rectum. Goes okay...until the jar breaks. Lots of blood, shards of glass.

It's weird to me that it's been this far into that leg of the discussion before anyone just spelled that out. Instead everybody keeps linking to it and saying "Don't WATCH it!" or putting disclaimers...

Old Boy and Spoorloos - absolutely agree, should have included them on my own list. And it probably goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway: a big boo to the Vanishing, the American remake that completely demolished the ending of Spoorloos.

I like Requiem for a Dream, but it never had any impact on me. It's so visually splashy (musically too, as I recall), almost cartoonish in parts that I always felt disconnected from the material, except for a few of Ellen Burstyn's scenes. I generally feel the same way about Pi & Black Swan, but not about the Wrestler, which left me feeling quite depressed for a good length of time.

Nice post! I hated "Black Swan" (didn't cry, didn't feel uncomfortable; just bored and underwhelmed by almost everything).

Not trying to sway your opinion of "Requiem For A Dream," just explaining why I find it so disturbing. I think the 'winter' portion of the movie is just heartbreaking. Heartbreaking. When Jennifer Connolly's character is on the phone with Jared Leto's character and she says, "Harry, can you come today?" and you know that he won't, and you know that she's about to do something awful for a fix - I just lose it every damn time. And then Harry's amputation and how every one of the characters ends up in the fetal position. So, so sad. I'm getting tears in my eyes just thinking about it. I also think the soundtrack really adds to the thought. Oh, and when Ellen Burstyn talks about how old and lonely she is. She is so good! (And should have won the Oscar over Julia Roberts that year).

"The Wrestler" had me sad for days, too.

Have you ever seen "I Stand Alone" or "The Seventh Continent"? I hear "The Seventh Continent" leaves viewers down for days afterwards.

A Serbian Film. For those of you who haven't seen it - DON'T!! For those of you who haven't heard of it, go to imdb.com or wiki and read the plot synopsis. I'll say this, it was this movie that coined the term "newborn porn." Honestly.

"Mother" isn't creepy or disturing in the way you think (like a horrible mother who's overbearing or psycho or what have you), but the movie did stick with me for days after.

Other movies I've HEARD are disturbing but have not seen are:

The Seventh Continent

Incendies

I Stand Alone

Visitor Q (the movie poster alone is disturbing!!!)

No Mercy

I've heard of many films on this list.

My issue is that I can't watch 'torture' scenes or scenes in which a person is made to do something fatal that they a repulsed by, etc. against their own will.

I also think a lot of these 'art' films are really gore pornos for an increasingly desensitized audience. We've gotten to the point where we're the Romans and our media is the coliseum. I think a lot of these films could have easily made their artistic points without so much gore or violence, and done so with more class. But, that's not to point of many of these films, nor the intention of the audience buying/renting them. We want to be 'shocked'.

So, I guess the list that I have is a wimpy one in comparisson lol

My list:

1. Saving Private Ryan--the D day scene was hard to watch , as was the death of the Jewish soldier up in the hotel room while the wimpy interpretor downstairs did nothing.

2. Pulp Fiction. Many of the scenes in it. But, mostly my shock came from how the audience laughed at the scenes of violence. I was floored by that.

3. The Wicker Man---the movie isn't any good (neither the original nor the remake). And, it's not scary at all. What did my head in is the fact that I find it horrifying for a person to have to be subjected to other people's religious practices or cultural beleifs when they are of harm to the person. Female genital mutilation, widdow burnings, etc. just to name a few. Although poorly acted and hoakie, the climax of the movie where the male character is placed inside a giant wicker man and set on fire (a method of death that horryfies me), the concept turned my stomach, if not so much the execution of the scene.

4. Graffiti Bridge--no, I'm not joking. I'm serious. It was my 'eureka' moment when I realized that Prince's view of women is comical, oversymplistic, and tragic. Here, he gives us an 'angel' who doesn't have the scruples or self-respect/insight to tell the supposed good guy "the kid" from the bad guys "Morris and Jerome". She speaks of heaven, and yet gets drunk with them in their limo. It's not that I find these things morally terrible. It's that Prince paints them as morally lacking, and that somehow he isn't in light of this. He repeats this "darlin nikki, lolita, 'do it like she like it'" female persona throughout much of his career.

God, the list goes on, but I've embarassed myself enough. lol

Wow, imago, this ^^ plus your "violent nature" thread, you seem to be a truly sensitive guy (I don't mean that pejoratively). I agree about the "gore porn" and gratuitous torture. As to your

1. I agree, most well done war movies really get to me. Being in those war situations must be true hell on earth; so many moral conundrums, so much pain and terror. "Band of Brothers," of which "Saving Private Ryan" is only a small episode, is quite hard to watch. Even worse, "The Pacific" - when those japanese women came out carrying the babies, and then the American soldiers think it's safe only to realize there's bombs in the swaddling ... I couldn't sleep. They used women and babies like kamikaze! How do you go back to Louisiana and Iowa after witnessing that?

2. Yes, audiences are desensitized to violence. But I think Tarantino deliberately tries to combine humor with violence, so maybe the audience laughter was "appropriate."

3. You know they used to burn people to death in wicker like that back in ancient Gaul (France area)? Pretty much all the stuff you mention here were actually done by people. Just like "violent nature," institutionalized violence and torture was the norm. In certain times and cultures, you'd be a babe in diapers when you've already witnessed death, killing, maiming and torture.

4. Or, maybe it's just a badly made movie?

Extraordinarily disturbing and I wouldn't even recommend that one to my worst enemy as a cruel joke. I don't know how you fared after watching it, but I feel like one will never be able to erase what they've seen in that film. Ever.

I'm not sure, but I think the lead charcter also played a role in the commercial movie "Takers" and just seeing (what I thought was) him onscreen again freaked me out so badly I couldn't relax or sleep afterwards. I mean, where the F** do you have to go inside of yourself to be able to play such a role? I don't want to know that kind of darkness. I do not.
