NJ Mother put 5-year-old in Tanning Bed

NUTLEY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey mother is facing criminal charges for child endangerment after police said she put her young daughter in a tanning bed.

But Patricia Krentcil told CBS 2′s Derricke Dennis on Tuesday night that the whole thing was a big misunderstanding. Krentcil, 44, loves to tan and she may even be addicted to it.

“I’ve been tanning my whole life, going to the beach, tanning salons and so forth,” she told Dennis.

While the mother of five from Nutley, arguably pushes her own skin to the limit, she’s adamant she would never tan her 6-year-old, fair-skinned daughter Anna.

“No not at all, not at all, not whatsoever,” Krentcil said.

But that’s exactly why Nutley Police arrested and charged Krentcil with child endangerment — for allegedly taking Anna to a tanning salon and into an actual tanning bed, causing a slight burn.

“There’s not room…I would never permit it…It didn’t happen,” Krentcil said.

Krentcil said when the school nurse asked her daughter how she got burned, she simply said, ‘I go tanning with mommy.’” However, the woman said her daughter’s burn was not from getting into a tanning bed, but from being outside and playing in the backyard.

“She’s 6 years old. Yes, she does go tanning with mommy, but not in the booth,” Krentcil said.

While little Anna might not be able to tell the story exactly as it happened, Krentcil is still in trouble with the law.

“The whole thing’s preposterous!” she said.

Krentcil said the incident has darkened her favorite hobby, but not enough to stop.

Even if she did not put her daughter there what kind of example is it to the poor girl to look at her mother doing that to her body sad. The photo looks totally photoshopped, because who would ever want to look like that, but I am afraid it might be real disbelief. The way she looks barf ill. She must have serious mental issues.....

Not to mention the risk to get skin cancer by going to tanning salons which is very high. Already going there one time a month makes it higher, I don't want to think about how often that woman goes there.

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I first heard it on news radio this morning. The newsman said to go to the station's link and see the mom: "You have to see it to believe it".

I was shocked when I clicked on the link! omg

I have a coworker who lives in that town. It's a pretty close-knit community, so I'm going to ask her if she's ever seen this woman.

nod It's hard to believe.

If your coworker ever saw her she sure will remember her......

And she is making her red-haired daughter believe she is ugly with her fair skin, so sad sigh.

I dont believe this is all truth... If one colors their hair, does that lead their daughter to believe her hair color is ugly?

Clearly the Mom has a screw loose, but just because the Mom thinks it looks good doesnt mean she is pushing that belief off on the daughter... My mom didnt wear makeup or care to fix her hair, but you wont catch me DEAD without it! Kids dont always follow nor care what their parents think, especially when its something as far out as this... she will be embarrased rather than feel ugly..

~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~
I hope you are right, but as she is going to such extremes I think it might give her daughter that impression. Especially as it isn't easy to have very light skin anyway as the girl does and people might comment on that anyway. But of course they will talk a lot more about how her mom looks. Changing your hair colour is easier to explain to a kid IMO. But who knows you might be right and she might actually LOVE her skin just because of her mom.
When I see pregnant women, I can't help but feel sympathetic and sorry. It's not easy rasing a child today. I pray that when that child enters this world, he/she has a great journey. Maybe I've seen to many f'd up parents, turning out f'd up kids. It's not the childs fault. sad
There should be more rules and regulations on having children...but then again, some of my best friends are "accidents" and I love them dearly! lol
Yeah I guess it depends on what state the mother or father is because if they bring up a kid when their times are hard then why would they want to bring a precious being into it knowing how messed up the world is?
'Snookie eat your heart out' tan. This woman and this story was aired on the Today show this morning and I was drinking coffee. I spat out my coffee in horror when I saw her face, I was that shocked at her appearance.
