One of my very favourite artists is John Atkinson Grimshaw. He was an English victorian painter who specialized in moonlight, stark bare trees, haunting street scenes, harbours & countryside etc. Don't know why I love his art so much, but I see myself standing in his paintings, seeing what he saw, smelling the cold damp autumnal & winter air like he must have done. His work stirs up much emotion for me. I love the atmosphere he creates especially with moonlight on water. I'm sure he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I think he saw beauty in the same way I do.

i like his light. very cool that you found that connection.

I'm probably most moved by the Italian Renaissance masters...

Michelangelo

Titian

Da Vinci

Raphael

And I really like Hieronymos Bosch, of similar time period, but Dutch.

I'd trade 'em all for the later Caravaggio, though. worship

Among more contemporary painters, I dig the less kitschy stuff by Kadir Nelson, Mati Klarwein and Robert Lentz.

This thread makes me want to steal time to brush up on the curent scene. I'm sure there's sooo much talent out there of which I'm not aware.

I generally don't like old-style paintings so I'd have to go with something more modern, like Hisashi Tenmyouya's cool reimaginings of traditional Japanese art. I do like August Strindberg's stormy skies though.

Lately that is probably my favorite period, too. I used to go for something more openly weird, but now i like the restraint and subtlety of a Leonardo, as well as the pure technical mastery

Of course, John Gascot. That's a given.

But there was a guy at Lakewood Church this weekend named David Garibaldi, who did a painting set to music. He gyrated all over the place, throwing up splotches in a seemingly random pattern. But....well - watch for yourself! (Don't read the title if you can help it!)
