I've been asked by a few family members to write a wish list for Christmas but I have to say I'm struggling with it. Most of the things I want can't be bought with money, let alone be wrapped as presents and put under the tree.

I know exactly how you feel. I used to feel the same way when my family and I exchanged gifts. We used to put all of our names into a bowl, and everybody would pick a name. Whichever name we got, that was who we bought the gift for. We stopped doing that last year, and I'm glad that we did. My brothers all make 6 figures (which is more money than I'll ever make in my lifetime). Whatever they need, they can just go out to the store and buy it. My parents are now retired, but are also financially comfortable, and have everything that they need. It just got to be pointless buying gifts for the adults in my family. Now we just buy gifts for the kids, and that makes it so much nicer. No wracking our brains trying to figure out what to buy each other, and no pressure. lol

RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Here in Germany people don't make a big deal out of Christmas gift giving, and I like that a lot. You normally just give a person you love some small token gift that rings sentimentally vs. a big ticket item. The concept of Black Friday for instance, completely baffles me at this juncture in my life. I look at the footage from the chaos that day sparks and I don't get it, what's the rush to just buy buy buy? If you drop dead tomorrow you can't take any of it with you.

It's been years since I've had a wish lst for Christmas; I don't usually have any expectation regarding gift giving because Christmas at it's heart has nothing to do with that. If someone wants to make te gesture of giving me something, I'm the kind of girl that's satisfied with a new pair of fluffy house shoes, bath/body products, a book or music gift. My priorities have changed as I've been blessed to grow older, and extravagance for the sake of extravagance at Christmas rings false to my core and is actually kind of offensive in my eyes.

That might be a surprise coming from someone in the fashion industry(and all that shallowness that THAT entails lol ), but I am actually a devout Christian--- so Christmas for me is a high holy time, & the last thing I'm thinking about is gifts. It's the time for me to really center in, and focus on the birth of Christ, the purpose in His birth, what that entails in new beginnings for the life I live on this earth, as well as the After Life. It's the time that I can give thanks for my redemption in the Savior, and to re-align myself with His teachings & what is priority in my spiritual walk with Him... to remember that because of Him, we who are His children are called to be Salt and Light in this troubled world. So actually, I guess that the last part is really what is on my Christmas list; to try my best to be Salt & Light in the world, not for my own glory, but to magnify the beauty and healing power that is life in Christ.

With Jesus and His message of love as the center of my joy, and believing all things will come to pass for good reason when it's all said and done..yeah, I'm really just fine with house shoes...they just gotta be the fluffy ones lol

Ron and some of my friends (mainly PositivityNYC) usually give me gifts from my wish list.

I keep one on Amazon and now one on Dick Blick (art supplies drool)

I told my aunt and she was like "I don't know I can do that. I like to buy you things I like." neutral

It's really common that people think like that. I guess I understand it in an I-would-like-this-thing-to-make-you-as-happy-as-it-makes-me kind of way, but when you specifically say that you want something else? Then it's really odd that they insist on a porcelain cat just because it looks appropriate in their own baby blue book shelves.

True! lol

What I've figured out is that I can't afford certain things I know my Hub would die for, say like, a Steinway piano or a sail boat lol ...what I can actually afford, I always feel him out and say "what do you think about so and so..? Would you wear/use something like that...?".... if I get an affirmative, then I jot it down to remember for a pool of things I know he would enjoy or find useful. I think gift giving, overall and regardless of occasion, should at least be something useful that your giftee can enjoy.

Maybe this is when those gift vouncher thingies can be handy. Just wrap those suckers up in a pretty box & hand them over, let the person get what they would like present

Yeah, it's always good to try to gauge whether or not they would like what you have in mind. The hard part is to be stealthy enough about it. A "so darling, what would you say if...someone...suddenly wanted to give you, say, a Samsung Xperia Galaxy phone? Would that make you happy?" ruins the whole surprise, lol.

When my father was living, he bought "Thriller" and "Purple Rain" on vinyl, then a family member of mines threw all the vinyls away, and kept the "Thriller' album cover, cleaning up. Don't ask me why shrug

I was at the bus stop and saw a dude randomly holding a copy of Purple Rain a couple weeks ago. Brought a smile to my face lol

I'm actually okay myself. Well, actually there are a few things I really want but they're things my family can't give me, like some income generating assets, a hot Playboy model girlfriend, and to move back to a really awesome place of my own in Chicago. Otherwise I'm more focused on trying to give gifts. A couple of years ago I was extremely desperate to get a new computer since the one I had before was about eight years old and ancient in tech time. But I finally got that, and eventually I was able to add a new TV, an iPod, and an HP Touchpad, so I am not hurting for gadgets. But I,d really like to see all of those people hurting because of the bad economy get some really decent jobs next year that can sustain their families so people won't need to occupy anything. But it seems some people are far too greedy and too full of themselves to see it would benefit them more to get these people working again and make them even richer.

Nobody asked me for my wishes, so this could end up either a nice surprise or a big disappointment in which case I believe it would be within my rights to throw a big hissy fit. I deserve it!! All I want for christmas is to throw myself on the floor kicking and screaming and generally making a complete spectacle of myself, preferably in a public place :cloud9:
