Joe Frazier Is In Hospice Care With Cancer (Update: Has Passed Away)

[He has passed away - luv4u]

"Smokin" Joe Frazier is fighting for his life.

The 67-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion has liver cancer and is under hospice care in Philadelphia, according to The Associated Press.

Frazier was diagnosed four or five weeks ago, according to his personal and business manager, Leslie Wolff, who told the AP on Saturday that doctors have not yet told Frazier how long he has to live.

"We have medical experts looking into the all the options that are out there," said Wolff. "There are very few. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop looking."

Wolff, who has been Frazier’s manager for seven years, said the boxer had been in out of the hospital since early October and receiving hospice treatment the last week.

"We appreciate every prayer we can get," said Wolff. "I’ve got everybody praying for him. We”ll just keep our fingers crossed and hope for a miracle."

Frazier’s illness was first reported by the New York Post, citing an unidentified source.

Joe Frazier has liver cancer

Joe Frasier

Joe Frazier fights Muhammad Ali in New York in 1974

Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier is receiving hospice care for liver cancer.

The 67-year-old was diagnosed four or five weeks ago, according to his manager, Leslie Wolff.

He revealed that doctors have not yet told the US fighter how long he has to live.

"We have medical experts looking into all the options that are out there," Mr Wolff said.

"There are very few. But that doesn't mean we're going to stop looking."

Joe Frasier

Mr Wolff, who has been Frazier's manager for seven years, said the boxer had been in and out of the hospital since early October and began receiving hospice treatment last week.

"We appreciate every prayer we can get," Mr Wolff added. "I've got everybody praying for him. We'll just keep our fingers crossed and hope for a miracle."

Frazier was the first man to beat Muhammad Ali, knocking him down and taking a decision in the so-called "Fight of the Century" in 1971. He would go on to lose two more fights to Ali, including the epic "Thrilla in Manila".

Frazier was bitter for many years about the way Ali treated him then. More recently, he said he had forgiven Ali for repeatedly taunting him.

Smokin' Joe was a small yet ferocious fighter who smothered his opponents with punches, including a devastating left hook he used to end many of his fights early.

It was the left hook that dropped Ali in the 15th round of their "Fight of the Century" at Madison Square Garden in 1971 to seal a win in a bout where each fighter earned a then-unheard of 2.5 million dollars.

While that fight is celebrated in boxing lore, Ali and Frazier put on an even better show in their third fight, held in a sweltering arena in Manila as part of Ali's world tour of fights in 1975.

Nearly blinded by Ali's punches, Frazier still wanted to go out for the 15th round of the fight but was held back by trainer Eddie Futch in a bout Ali would later say was the closest thing to death he could imagine.

Frazier won the heavyweight title in 1970 by stopping Jimmy Ellis in the fifth round of their fight at Madison Square Garden. He defended it successfully four times before George Foreman knocked him down six times in the first two rounds to take the title from him in 1973.

Frazier would never be heavyweight champion again.

In recent years, Frazier had been carrying out regular autograph appearances, including one in Las Vegas the weekend of a Floyd Mayweather Jr fight in September.

Frazier fights for his life

BY BERNARD FERNANDEZ

fernanb@phillynews.com

HIS EMACIATED body ravaged by liver cancer, former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier literally is in the fight of his life.

What has yet to be determined is whether the possible final round of that fight for Frazier, 67, will be waged here, in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia, or in a hospital in Russia.

Members of Frazier's family, who have not always seen eye-to-eye with Smokin' Joe's business manager, Les Wolff, professed to be unaware last night of Wolff's possible decision to send the extremely ill Frazier to Russia for experimental cancer treatments not available in the United States.

"In a few hours I'll be calling Moscow," Wolff told the Daily News. "Some physicists here in the U.S. say there are a number of treatments in Russia that might be helpful.

"We didn't find out Joe had this until about 4 weeks ago. He had, in my opinion, a number of misdiagnoses. Things that should have been done years ago - decades ago - were not done until recently. But I can't look at the past. I have to look at what we can do now. We need to make him as comfortable as possible and, hopefully, find a miracle."

Peter Lyde, Frazier's son-in-law and the husband of Municipal Court Judge Jacquelyn Frazier-Lyde, said family members met yesterday to discuss the best way to provide a united front in the event of the patriarch's passing. He added that no one in the group had been made aware by Wolff of the possibility of Frazier traveling halfway around the world to receive some form of alternative treatment.

"We're keeping Pops in our prayers," said Lyde, in the family's first public comments since news of Frazier's illness was reported. "You can see the fight still in him. He's Smokin' Joe Frazier . . . a warrior. He's probably the toughest person I've ever met. He's aware of the good wishes of people from around the world for his recovery."

"As far as that Russia thing, Les and Denise [Mims, Frazier's longtime girlfriend] are making the decisions on the medical side of it. Les speaks for Joe Frazier as his business manager. We speak for Joe Frazier as his family. I'll leave it at that.

"But I would hope we all share the same hope that Pops somehow beats this thing. He has a team of doctors. Who's treating him, I can't say. But now that we know the severity of what he's facing, how do we fix it? Can it be fixed? Ultimately, it's in the Lord's hands.

"We just want what's best for him. If that means him going to Russia, I guess he's going to Russia."

Wolff said Frazier is in a Philadelphia hospice, has lost 50 pounds and is reluctant to see anyone outside of his tight inner circle. Among those who have asked about visiting his bedside but have not been allowed to do so are another former heavyweight champion, Easton's Larry Holmes, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

"Joe doesn't want to see anybody, the way he is now," Wolff explained. "I think you can understand why. He's a proud man.

"He is well aware of what's going on. He's on pain medicine that causes him to sleep a lot, but when he's awake he's quite coherent."

Frazier, who was born in Beaufort, S.C., the last of Rubin and Dolly Frazier's 13 children, moved to Philadelphia as a teenager in search of a better life. He brought with him a work ethic baked and hardened under an unforgiving Southern sun.

After finding work in a slaughterhouse, Frazier discovered his true calling, boxing, where his sledgehammer left hook and indomitable will sent him first to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. There he won the heavyweight gold medal as a replacement for the injured Buster Mathis. Then it was on to a legendary professional career highlighted by his epic, three-bout rivalry with Muhammad Ali. The first of those pairings, on March 8, 1971, was dubbed the "Fight of the Century." Smokin' Joe floored Ali with a leaping left hook in the 15th round en route to winning a unanimous decision.

A 1990 charter inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Frazier compiled a 32-4-1 record as a pro, with 27 victories inside the distance.

In recent years Frazier's health has worsened as the result of diabetes, chronic back pain and the loss of a toe in a lawnmower accident. But no matter the obstacles he's had to overcome, he has remained the same man who went to hell and back three times with Ali and kept punching.

"If you talk about heart, determination, courage, all that good stuff, you're talking about Joe Frazier," said Holmes, a onetime Frazier sparring partner. "I got my fingers crossed. I've been watching the news all day and all night, trying to find out what's happening with him.

"I know it don't look good, but if anybody can beat what he's up against, you'd have to think Joe would be the guy."

I can completely understand why he wouldn't want anyone to see him at this time.

I've had loved-one after loved-one declare how they were "going to beat this thing", until ultimately the inevitable happens. I'm all for doing whatever it takes to save a loved one's life, but in situations like Mr. Frazier finds himself in today; rather than disturb him with all it would involve to send him to Russia for some experimental treatment that in all likelihood probably wouldn't do much toward restoring any sort of quality of life (given the advanced stage of his cancer - and the fact that the treatment is only "experimental"), I think they should just focus on keeping him pain-free and as comfortable as possible, while showering him with all the love that can possibly be heaped upon him.

Ex-heavyweight champ Frazier still fighting cancer

By DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer – 30 minutes ago

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier is battling the liver cancer that has put him under hospice care.

The 67-year-old boxer sleeps for most the day but is coherent when awake, his personal and business manager said. Leslie Wolff, who has been Frazier's manager for seven years, said Frazier has been flooded with get-well messages from former boxers and fans. Wolff tells The Associated Press some fans have offered to donate a liver.

"There is evidence that there are certain people that fight much harder than other people, and in doing so, they last longer," Wolff said Monday. "They have the heart of a champion. Joe ain't no quitter. Even in this struggle, he's showing people you don't give up."

Frazier was diagnosed last month with the disease. His manager says the boxer had been in out and out of the hospital since early October and has been receiving hospice treatment the last week.

The documentary "Joe Frazier: When the Smoke Clears" will be screened Tuesday night at the DocNYC festival in New York.

"No matter what happens, we must make sure his legacy stays alive," Wolff said.

Wolff said doctors have not yet told Frazier how long he has to live. Wolff, who dismissed false reports all weekend that Frazier had died, denied a story he wanted to send Frazier to Russia for treatment. Wolff said he contacted doctors there only for ideas for other potential treatments to fight the disease.

"We just want to see what's out there to see what can be done here," he said.

Frazier was the first man to beat Muhammad Ali, knocking him down and taking a decision in the so-called Fight of the Century in 1971. He would go on to lose two more fights to Ali, including the epic "Thrilla in Manila" bout.

Frazier has not allowed anyone to see him except his immediate family and associates.

"He's in no shape to have any visitors, nor does he want any," Wolff said.

I know, and for a TRUE fighter like Joe, that's still something I can't accept. Joe Frazier, I argue, was probably the toughest SOB in boxing history. He was the ONLY one who didn't take Ali's shit. Frazier was the inspiration behind "Rocky" really. True the Chuck Wepner (don't know if that's his name) fight inspired the story but the courage and determination was ALL Frazier. The guy lost an eye trying to defeat Ali in '75! That guy didn't take no shit from ANYONE! Even when Ali dirtied up his name (which he admitted was part of his promotion for the fights he and Frazier had), he kept on fighting against the odds. The "Thrilla in Manilla" and the so-called "Fight of the Century" were some of the greatest boxing fights of all time with the latter being a David vs. Goliath like fight and the former being almost close to a street fight! Ali almost collapsed at the end of it...
