Just saw the Thrilla in Manila documentary. All I gotta say is whew .

Now I can fully understand why Frazier kept holding a grudge against Ali all these years. All those things Ali did... WOW.

i watched it also and wondered why Ali was so verbally cruel to Joe Frazier. I found one online opinion which i agree with. it starts with a George Foreman quote.

"George Foreman admitted that he never feared any man like he did Joe Frazier.

I believe Ali felt the same way and he was trying to project that fear into Frazier and the extent he took it shows how scared he really was. Ali had fought many black men in the past yet never felt the need to humiliate them to the extent he did Frazier and from a psychological standpoint, there is only one explanation for his behavior."

imo i feel it was about Ali using a strategy to psyche Joe Frazier out and to humiliate him to the point of his visualizing a total loss to Ali.

cruel as it was, it was during a time when the term "by any means necessary" was a militant term and many adopted the phrase. Ali had no shame.

It was almost like Ali was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Frazier... Ali's attempts to psyche him out like he did Sonny Liston and others failed... MISERABLY.

It was probably intentional to "push him to the limit". Thing I get from Ali is whether or not people believe it or not, he does try to bring the best out of his opponent in whatever means he uses to get through to him. I have no idea if it was personal or not but Ali said it wasn't but it seemed to really rub Frazier the wrong way which is why he whup the shit out of him in Manila.

I just finished watching the documentary myself, having never seen it before. It was very powerful and well done, I was very touched by the story. I was a young kid during the time of these fights between Ali and Frazier, so while I remember them going on, I really wasn't able to grasp the full scope of what it was all about until watching this documentary tonight.

The only thing I really regret is that I'm only now learning what a true hero Smokin' Joe really was (...and what a MAN), because at the time all this was going on, many people seemed to buy into all the crap Ali was saying. At the time, I remember wanting Ali to win, but knowing what I know now (...and understanding things now as an adult) I wish Joe Frazier had beat Ali's ass at "The Thrilla in Manila". Although truth be told; he did! And Joe Frazier seems to take delight in the idea that he is responsible for Ali's current condition. Karma ain't nobodies joke, and Ali was very full of himself back then (talking all kinds of shit, and now can hardly utter a word). Smokin' Joe shut him down! I like what Frazier said in regards to Ali's behavior in those days; in effect 'everything you do as a young man will come back and bite you in the ass when you get to be old'.

That piece on George Foreman was pretty good too. Man, George Foreman was a KILLER, lol. Now he's a big ol' cuddly Papa Bear, lol. What a transformation, lol. There are a couple of good documentaries out there that cover the Ali/Foreman "Rumble in The Jungle", one of my favorites is one called "Soul Power", which covers it from the angle of the musical performances.

This [Thrilla in Manila] documentary was all the more poignant due to the realization that at the same time I was watching it, Joe Frazier was lying in state in preparation for his funeral tomorrow. I'm truly saddened by the death of this great warrior. May he be resting in peace. And may Ali receive the forgiveness I'm certain he's asked for in regards to the actions taken, and words spoken, in his youth. If we all could go back in time and change a few things, I'm sure we all would.

peace

Ali had to change. All them whuppings on his head and body had to affect him. I think what Joe did in Manila really affected him to the point he's at now.

No one is exempt from karma, and forgiveness is divine. I agree. Ali was a very charismatic person, and many did not know what was going on behind the scenes. Also, Ali had this gift of psyching people out, and it worked for him. Does Ali wish he could go back, and change a few things, even though the damage is already done? It'll be nice to hear from him. As for Foreman, he was another powerful hitter, and it is nice to see and her that he's doing well for himself. I have never tried his grill, and people tell me it's slamming thumbs up!

It's so heartbreaking to see Ali in such awful shape. Although I suppose I should just be grateful that he's still with us (...and I am).
