Have you ever met a very intelligent ten year old? I have. My daughter is 9 scores horribly on tests due to her dyslexia but has a wisdom far beyond her years and has shocked adults with it, not just me. Yet there are some things you would or at least should feel uncomfortable saying to her. If she smarts off at me in an arrogant fashion I will say something but not nearly what I will say to her 10 years from now if at 19 that same noise came from her mouth. And if she speaks like that at 29, oh, she will be sorry.

A persons age should temper your response.

I doubt there are any org member under the age of 12/13, which is, in my opinion, the age where you can start being completely honest with someone (even in an argument).

It sounded as if you were addressing respect and that young folks should understand that they usually can't be right when they argue with someone much older; - that's what I would criticise.

Actually the exact opposite is true. I am gently telling some well seasoned folks to take it a bit easy on someone young enough to be your child. I am not saying patronize them either; Pdogz knows what I mean.

Dave, I am not asking you to be dishonest with a 12/13 year old but most definitely you should temper your response. Edit it to your audience.

It's not about being right or wrong in an argument, it's about understanding where each side is coming from respectfully.

When I was a much younger person, I considered myself to be rather smart and mature for my age. One thing I used to absolutely HATE was when an older person wouldn't take me seriously. And it used to REALLY annoy me when that older person would say: "You'll understand when you get older". But guess what? When I got older and reflected back, I better understood what that person was trying to say to me. But that need to understand goes both ways, which is why I promised myself to never forget what it felt like when I was younger to hear that from an older person.

The point of this thread, as I understand it, is two-fold. On the one hand, to remind older folks to take it easy when arguing (or trying to make a point) with a younger person, because there is a certain context that younger people haven't had the opportunity to grasp yet. And on the other, for younger people to take it easy when arguing (or trying to make a point) with an older person, because they're not likely looking at a given situation in the same way as you (and may no longer be able to). In either case, there's no point in ripping each others heads off in the process. It's about mutual respect.

But considering this is the Internet, there are many cues that will be missed (...like the age of the person we're speaking with) because we're not actually having this discussion face to face , which in my opinion allows for a lot of misunderstanding and hurt feelings. That's why I think the idea of this thread was a good one, although understandably; not everyone would feel comfortable participating. This was just one of many ways to help everyone understand who it is we're talking with on this board, and to help the conversations flow smoother and with less conflict.
