I'm diggin' the way his cape looks, and the fact that he doesn't resemble Christopher Reeves, therefore making this actually look like a brand new entry in the movie canon.

Really? One of the first things I thought was that he resembles him.

This dude is a wee bit too buff for me though.

What is it with these muted super-hero colors of late?

I swear, it won't be long before the Wonder Twins get their own movie, but they'll be decked out in muted, lethery, outfits.

With the trend of comic book movies going darker, I wonder what Superman's issues will be. Will Superman have OCD and be an alcoholic?

I doubt Superman can get sloshed or have an anxiety disorder because of his alien physiology. wink

Are you kidding me? As good an actor as Henry Cavill is, BUFF he ain't! He's smaller than Brandon Routh for a start!

Who's ready to go up, up and away again?

The first photo of Henry Cavill in costume as Superman for the new big-screen version entitled " Man of Steel" was just released Thursday morning. It shows Superman looking like he's rising to his feet against a smoking, smoldering vault door.

The costume retains the basic look from the comic books: blue with a red cape and boots. But the suit has a textured, almost rubbery look that's different from previous movie incarnations, like Christopher Reeve's stretchy bodysuit. The colors look darker and more muted than previous versions of the suit, and the raised "S" insignia on his chest also looks better. Since he's in shadow its difficult to tell if he's also wearing the classic red trunks which are actually getting eliminated in the upcoming revamp of the " Superman" comic books.

Cavill, a 29-year-old British native best known for the TV series "The Tudors," recently told Total Film magazine that he's been working out and chowing down to get himself into shape for the role. "I'm on 5000 calories a day," Cavill said, "You've got to eat protein first, then a little bit of carbs." He needs plenty of fuel for his exhausting workout routine: "I'm training two and a half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits."

It was also announced earlier this week that Cavill will be joined by Laurence Fishburne, who will play Perry White, Clark Kent's editor at the Daily Planet. Fishburne is just the latest Oscar nominated actor added to the cast, which includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod. Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner also star as Superman's biological and adoptive father, respectively.

5,000 calories a day!!! omfg

I'm guessing his suit doesn't have rubber muscles then. lol

I hate everything but the cape. Otherwise, its crap. Too rubbery. Too fish-scaley. Too much like the new Spider-Man costume. Too dark.

I can't lie, I would love to see a Smallville movie and see Tom Welling in the Supe outfit. I thought at the end he did a good job separating his Clark persona.

The last time I watched the movies was back when I was a little kid, so I might be remembering this wrong, but...Clark Kent did actually come off as a little nerdy and neurotic to me, so I don't think either of those is really a far-fetched thing lol .

Xibalba - I don't know, he looks ENORMOUS to me. Do you see his legs? They're huge.

Does it look like he's got a prosthetic brow on in this pic? Where's his eyebrows? Looks kind of like this:

So did I, but man, 'Superman Returns' was a bore-fest.

General Zod? No Doomsday or Darkseid?

His head shape and hair remind me more of George Reeves who play Supe in the 50's tv show, from that standpoint I don't mind. The suit itself is ugly, what's the point of the scales and sheen look? It's still two years away so, GOD willing I'm alive still I will definitely go see it.

Exactly. And I'll ask the question again. Isn't Hollywood supposed to be "creative"? Why are there sequals and remakes? Ugh. Frustrating. It's okay, Europe or Asia will come up with something that we'll eventually copy and call it an original.

Very cool....he's got something evil in his face. Never liked this "good guy" Superman image.

The last Superman was so boring.

You noticed that, too, eh? I also like the edge this guy seems to have.

A character who's darned near incapable of using his tremendous power to do dark stuff is far less intriguing -- and less realistic -- than one who is capable yet chooses otherwise.
