Rupert Everett Slams Jennifer Aniston's 'Tasteless' Career

Don't expect Rupert Everett to work with Jennifer Aniston any time soon -- especially if she makes another "tasteless rom-com."

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, the actor said that certain stars retain A-list status despite underperforming at the box office, and used Aniston to illustrate his point.

"If you look and analyze the careers of many, many stars, you'll find that they're mostly sustained by the business," Everett said. "You'll find there's lots of women and lots of men in the business that the powers that be decide are right for their business, and they'll stand with them for quite a long time.

"OK, something will go wrong, like Jennifer Aniston will have one too many total flops, but she's still a member of that club," Everett continued. "And she will still manage to -- like a star forming in the universe, things will swirl around her and it will suddenly solidify into another vital tasteless rom-com, a little glitter next to the Crab Nebula."

Since Friends ended in 2004, Aniston has starred in such flops as Derailed, Rumor Has It..., Love Happens, The Bounty Hunter and this summer's The Switch. Her box-office hits were The Break-Up, Marley & Me and the ensemble flick He's Just Not That Into You.

Her next movie? The Adam Sandler romantic comedy Just Go With It, due out Feb. 11, her 42nd birthday.

But Aniston isn't the only one Everett took issue with: The My Best Friend's Wedding star also called out Colin Firth's performance in Mamma Mia!

"Colin Firth -- I don't think was at all good in Mamma Mia! I would have thought it was almost a career-icide," Everett said. "On the other hand, I think his [Oscar-nominated] performance in A Single Man was the best performance of his life."

Thank you Rupert for saying what millions of us were saying all these years. There's NO stretch in that woman's whole movie career, its the same "goody two shoes" role in every movie. I could stomach her 1/2 way in "Friends" and the movie "Office Space" but the rest is just drivel. And pleeeeeeease don't get me started on the sympathy bullshit due to the Brad/Angelina bullshit rolleyes

Also, I have no desire to watch Mamma Mia so I can't comment, however I do agree that ALL the cast in "A Single Man" showed out,,,,not only Colin, but Julianne as well. But the true star of that film was the director IMO.

Meh. I get his point, but it's kind of tasteless to single only Jennifer Aniston out, because he seems to be talking about the larger Hollywood system, but all everyone is focusing on is her in the quote. If he was going to name names, I'd love to see him take a bat to some of his friend Julia Roberts' movies. And has anyone seen the shit that Katherine Heigl stars in? (Not to mention the guys who get to star in those awful rom-coms but don't have to take the hit for them, like Gerard Butler, who aspires to mediocrity but gets a pass anyway.)

Plus, a guy who said yes to "The Next Best Thing" should be careful throwing stones. biggrin

Oh Please! Rupert? When is the last time that dude had a box office hit?

Ok so lemme get this straight....3 out of her 7 movies were hits. Um...what's wrong with that score? Who wouldn't want 3 million out of 7 million dollars for example? I personally liked Derailed and The Break Up. She may not have much range but consider that Julia Roberts was once in the same boat as well as Tom Cruise. Jennifer did get an Oscar nod for The Good Girl or whatever it was called. Maybe she hasn't found the right role to showcase her drammatic talent but in the meantime she still gotta work and pay her bills.

I just don't think Rupert is in any position to call somebody out or even call out the movie industrty when he's not pulling in box office receipts aside from the voice he does in Shrek - a friggin cartoon in all actuality.

Studios and producers are in the business of making money so if Jennifer is bringing the green then why wouldn't they stand by her? It is we the movie going public who have the power to decide whether we will see her or not and so far, there are enough fans to keep her career afloat.

Rupert needs to keep many a people's name out his mouth. He talks too much crap about other people's talent or lack thereof according to his distinguished ass. Shit he need to ease up on that botox that's what his ass need to do.

I'm gonna argue the other side for a sec, because I believe, from what I've read, that Rupert was making a point about how his career tanked after he came out of the closet and he wasn't able to get work because of that. He's decrying the whole system that promotes Aniston but derails him, and it's not based on the quality of the work or the box-office. That's how I take it, anyway.

I still think it's unfair to single out Jen, though.

WTH is Rupert up to these days? lol Jennifer Aniston gets work because people like her (fans as well as those in the business). And I don't believe Rupert is so daft as to not understand that box office is not the way a majority of movies become profitable these days.

Also, The Bounty Hunter was far less offensive than I was expecting. lol

We agree it's unfair to single out Jen. She's too easy a target. Heck you could single out Adam Sandler because his comedy is crass and not all of his films have been hits. I think his last couple films flopped: Funny People and some mess he made about a grieving husband post 9/11.

Rupert's career tanked, IMO, because he's probably burned bridges with high profile people and because it's too easy to typecast him. You can only play the debonaire british sidekick so many times. He's just not that marketable and it's not because he's gay else he wouldn't have been able to have the few hits that he did manage to make e.g. My Best Friend's Wedding. Look at Neil Patrick Harris; he's gay plus ugly as I don't know what but the dude has charm and audiences respond positively to him. Everett is just past his prime. He's up in age, no longer attractive, gossips too much and I think there's are still people that associate him with porn. I've always heard he used to be a porn star. Aside from Sylvester Stalone, I can't think of any male porn stars who have transitioned into successful leading men in hollywood.

He lost any ounce of credibility when he walked out of Celebrity Aprentice because he claimed he couldn't talk to people unless the words were written down for him like a script.

Aniston bores me to tears. But there are few things more pathetic than a dying old queen flailing and lashing out for his last few bits of attention. confused

So sad, too. He used to be kinda hot... and dignified.

Pretty much my take too. You don't shit where you work; Mr. Everett could've made the same criticism without every mentioning anyones name. Tacky

Cerebus and DesireeNevermind points of view are spot on. What seems to be the problem really, an actor is on as good as the scripts. Screenwrites compared to those I'd say 25 year ago are just straight up inferior, these people don't have enough talent to adapted someone else's story for Christ sake. I'm aware Ms. Anistion was on a hit TV sitcom. Maybe she keeps getting work because studios think she can bring people into the theaters or push come to shove, people will rent her movies based on name recognition. I can't comment on her talent or the lack of, I've never seen her in anything. shrug
