Of all times? No, not a chance.

I still get thrills thinking about a Rebel Blockade runner with an Imperial Star Destroyer flying over my head chasing it. I was 7 in 1977, that single shot remains the most amazing thing i ever saw in a cinema, i suppose if i was 7 now, Avatar would similarly blow my mind.

Beautiful, but it lacks heart and soul.

I don't.

I totally agree with what you said. It's probably visually a spectacle to see, especially in 3D, but does that make Avatar a great movie? Nope. I've heard more about how much is costs than the content. In fact, I seem to remember the same "most expensive movie ever made" hype the last time James Cameron made a movie about some sinking ship.

The fictional love story that was added to Titanic was a selling point. But I was only interested in watching the true story of how the ship sink.

Nope. It isn't the greatest, but it was a great fun way to spend a couple of hours. The script is awful, but I was transfixed throughout regardless.

The true story? As if nothing was embellished? I think the technical side of things is what was more true, as the love story and those characters were totally fictional. It really was just a CGI film. I mean, we knew how it was going to end, so let's get to the end and watch the CGI. It was very well done for 1997. The CGI realm was really starting to blossom at that time, with Lucas having just released the redone Star Wars films and the prequelology coming out soon, Hollywood was truly getting creative for once and making some visually stunning stuff. Titanic was part of that. Cameron was truly obsessed w/ ship wrecks and the Titanic specifically. There were a couple of specials on Discovery|HD with him doing wreck dives and exploring things, including the Titanic. It's probably why he hasn't made a movie since Titanic.

I liked it when I saw it, but then the more I thought about it afterwards, the more I it disappointing. There were no surprise twists and no jawdropping special effects that broke new ground. neutral

I read that if Avatar did well at the box office, James Cameron would like to make a sequel. But I really didn't see anything in the movie to explore in a sequel. confused

And given his track record, that won't be until 2021.

Of all time? Hellz No. Those first 3 star wars movies deserve that credit because they basically used small models/anamatronics/remote control with limited digital technology and created some realistic looking effects. Plus Lucas's work on those films and the technology he used paved the way for films like Avatar. I think one of his computer companies back then eventually became Pixar.

When you can create a visually stunning sci film with special effects and not have 90% of it be computer animated or blue screen then you can claim "greatest sci-fi". Oh and can we please include the Lord of The Rings trilogies, they are fantasy flicks but if we're talking film technology then they definitely should be included for consideration.

carry on.

Avatar doesn't need a sequel. For any, James Cameron should consider making an all-new original movie on something else.

Pixar has such a great history. I'm glad you brought it up. On the Pixar Film Shorts DVD, there's a mini-documentary on there about the history of Pixar. They really were pushing the envelope w/ CGI and animation back then. The stories are just incredible of their early days. Folks should check it out. Most of the people

You're totally right about Lord of the Rings. I was never a fan of the books when I was a kid. I remember everyone reading them, but I never found the idea of hobbits to be anything interesting. I even resisted the movies when they came out. (I kind of stray away from hyped movies at first, sometimes waiting until they come to TV before I view them.) But the movies eventually captured my attention. I ended up buying the 4-disk editions that came out. Totally love the stories, the CGI, the conflicts, etc.

You're right about the first Star Wars films. Models, blue screens, miniatures, etc etc etc truly set a new standard in film making. Sure it's easier sometimes to just render a model in a computer, but the hands on practical models has a whole different feel. I don't mind that Lucas enhanced the older films w/ some added graphics. The basic models etc were still in there. It's just like someone dusted everything off a bit. The prequelology is another show we won't go into here.

I enjoyed the film much more than I expected to. I may see it again this week. I wouldn't call it the greatest of all time though. This movie reminded me of a mix of "The Last Samurai" and "Dances With Wolves" in space.

Hmmmm now thats a big statement

i would have to say Nay! Whilst it is a fabulous film - i was blown away as to how good it was, i'm not sure that it will stand up to the likes of :

Alien - now that was amazing, and still is to this day. And to think it was mad on such a small budget, and it skyrocketed Sigourney to the best Sci Fi heroine of all time

The sequel 'Aliens' didn't fail to deliver either - it was amazing, and again still is today.

the later two, well whilst i'm a fan, i can see why they didnt reach the heights of the first 2!!!

Terminator 2 is another fuck off Sci-Fi film, so to pick one is just too hard.

Lets just see if Avatar reaches some sort of legendary status over the coming decades

and lets not forget Blade Runner

I was just glad it wasn't a typical alien movie. There was a lot of blatant, and subtle, political overtones and messages in it, especially based on Apartheid.

Completely agree about those two, and the first Terminator flick. I'm not expecting Avatar to be the best scifi of all time, I'm not even expecting it to be the best James Cameron scifi movie, with T2 and Aliens for company but if it comes close to his former works I'll be more than happy.
RIP sad
