PASSING STRANGE... the greatest musical i have ever seen and the new SPIKE LEE film of it which i am now addicted to

okay, so i am going to sound incredibly uber-geeky, but fuck it...

i saw this show 5 times on broadway, and have been eagerly anticipating the release of spike lee's filmed version. the movie is only playing for a few days more on a single screen here in nyc

HOWEVER

it is available now on pay-per-view, and i can not recommend it enough. in 2 weeks i have gone to see the movie 5 times in the theatre, and taken everyone i can to see it with me. i have not yet watched it on pay-per-view because i want to see it on the big screen as many times as i can, and the PPV will make me lazy about going to see it.

this is the most incredible musical i have ever seen, and spike's film captures the three final performances (one of which i was at) beautifully

welcome to the real...

Thanks so much for this, Chris. It's just in time to screen at the Toronto International Film Fest. I wonder if it'll be a late add. hmmm

I saw this... easily one of the best musicals I've ever seen in my life. I didn't know that Spike already completed filming for this...I need to check my local arthouse theatres and the local film festivals to see what their plans are for it!!!!Thanks for the heads up! dancing jig

spike filmed the last 3 performances. i was at the very last one which was INCREDIBLE. the improv section of "alright" before intermission went on for 12 minutes... no lie. we were all dancing in the aisles, screaming, singing, and jumping on our chairs. they even pulled eisa who played the mother role and the understudies on stage for it.

sadly, no. the show only ran about 6 months. after it lost the tony to "in the heights" (because white audiences connect more to latin people in silly drivel about winning the lottery than black people creating incredible art twocents ) it closed pretty quickly.

however, the experience of spike's film is almost as good as seeing it live, and sometimes better than.

I'll totally pay the $5.99, but I like to throw a bit more money at Spike's projects and see them on the big screen.

from the view...

whoopi is also a huge fan and came several times.

NOTE: this is a medley, and trying to lift anything from this show out of context doesnt work well. it's like trying to cut a few inches out of a tapestry and thinking it will work.

as do i. have you seen the 20th anniversary edition of do the right thing yet?

as much as i hate when they double dip, and the criterion dvd release years ago was awesome, it's so worht it to have it on bluray.

I saw the movie "Passing Stange" last week while in NYC...I'm still humming songs like Arlington Hill, Keys and We just had sex. I purchased the Soundtrack CD at the IFC movie theater and can stop playing it. I will purchase the DVD when ever it comes out.

Excellent Musical!!!! Check out the movie!!!
