DID YOU HAVE CHITLINS FOR THANKSGIVING? OR SHOULD I SAY "CHITTERLINGS"

I had some chitlins for thanksgiving. My girlfriend is Asian, and she attended my family thanksgiving activities and she was unaware that black people pronounce chitterlings as "chitlins". She never ate any chitlins before and she was baffled to hear us say chitlins instead of chitterlings because she saw the correct spelling (chitterlings) written on the buckets. I can't imagine hearing any of my family members say "will you please pass the chitterlings?" I never heard the correct pronounciation of the word chitterlings pronounced by a black person ever. Have you?

Yeah, I like Charles Barkley. He makes a lot of sense and he ain't afraid to say what's on his mind. Chitlins is good, especially when you put some hot sauce and mustard on them...yummy.

well, i grew up on johns island, sc (which is very much predominantly black), so that might be why... but i've only heard it chitlins...

i'm a vegitarian now, but i have eaten chitlins... chitlins, gizzards, livers, damn near any part of the animal we could get... nod

I typed chitlins into google and received my answer in .11 seconds. For the record I chose one website, but they all said the same thing so take this as a fact.

Chitterlings is the formal name, but most folks call ‘em Chitlins. And, if you know about chitlins, well there is nothing formal about them. They are the large intestines of a pig. As such, they possess a distinct, er aroma when you cook them. Some people turn up their noses (literally and figuratively) at the mention of chitlins. They are a food that most people either love or hate. However, Chitlins have a unique and storied history in Southern American culture. And, I’m here to tell ya, when served with hot sauce, ham, turkey, macaroni & cheese, collard greens and sweet potato pie…ain’t nuttin better!

As the story goes, chitlins were served to slaves as the discards of the pig after the slave masters took all the best parts. Forget about the ham, bacon, pork chops and loins. What we got was the ears, feet and chitlins. Since they were considered slave food, some African Americans consider them demeaning or offensive and refuse to eat them. For the same reason, some Black folks are closet chitlin eaters. They love them, but don't want people to know, and wouldn’t be caught dead ordering them in public. But, don’t make the mistake of thinking chitlins are an African American dish.

Chitlins are also very popular among Southern whites, who consider them part of Southern cooking.

Chitlins are also part of Cajun cooking. Andouille sausage is made from chitlins and tripe.

Mexicans eat chitlins in a spicy, tomato-based soup.

Hungarians use chitlins as casing and stuffing for sausages.

Chitlin sausages are also a delicacy in France; And,

Chitlins can be found in certain Asian dishes.

You don't just eat chitlins, though. You gotta clean them first. Unless you’ve purchased Moo & Oink Hand-Cleaned Chitlins. After cleaning, chitlins are put on for a long boil, often with hog maws, a little vinegar, salt, pepper and onions. To absorb the distinctive smell while they’re cooking, some people toss in a potato or an apple.

I already know the history about chitlins. I'm just curious to see if anybody pronounce the correct pronounciation of the word chitterlings.

Hey, Lovemachine, that article is about as dead-on as you can get. Though I didn't know that other cultures outside of America ate chitlins. And I've never known some Blacks to be closet chitlin eaters, but it doesn't surprise me. I've eaten them when I was younger, but had a bad experience with them, and don't eat them anymore.

i think old people down south (where i'm from) had no teeth and it sounded like 'chitlins' and as culture evolved, so did the word. With no teeth, evrything is mush

My dad made chitlins when I was a kid,and I thought they were okay.But now that I know what they really are (pig intestine),I won't touch them!

No,I don't eat Inerds of any kind. I don't like that kinda stuff. True I like Caribbean Food,Soul Food and everything but Inerds,Gizzards? I'm not into that or Calf's Liver. Not for me. I'll stick with Curry or Jerk Classics instead.

I think that's a reference to menudo, but i was always
told that it was cow's intestines in the menudo. Spices,
hominy, and inerds...yummy!

shit, i put mustard and hot sauce on everything... :LOL:... i still do...

but especially chitlins... because of the smell, i wouldn't even try to eat them without mustard & hot sauce... unless i stirred them up into my collard greens... that's good too... no need for the mustard, but i still gotta put hot sauce on 'em...

Most of my family loves them barf I can't stand them barf And it is pronounced "chitlins".I don't care how it spelled.

"Cha-cha" is the pickled green tomato,onion, stuff you put on beans, greens & chitlins.Im sure you have had it.

In Nashville,Tn back in the 80's,it was a place that had a chitlin pizza !It was pretty good too.

Oh, ok..I know what you're talking about now, I never referred to it as cha-cha though. Yeah, I have cha cha with my chitlins but I refer to them as toppings though, lol. Damn, I never had a chitlin pizza before, lol! Have you ever had any fried chitlins?
