I don't know if you have to actually hit rock bottom...but you do have to go thru the lows to fully appreciate the highs, yes ...

hmm.. maybe I should rephrase that.. its a bit too harsh, but thanks for replying.. yeah I was just talking to a friend before and one can really take for granted what one has infornt of them.. when they have lost it all, then they can really appreciate what they had.. its a learning curve not necessarily planned but that strengthens one, I believe

By the way, the exact opposite of this is: Sometimes you have to let go of everything to know what's worth holding on to.

But I agree, that to be more appreciative of the good, you have to expreiece the bad. The worse you get, the more appreciative you are of the smaller things in life that seemed meaningless before.

I think you can ask/pray for a grateful, appreciative heart. In the book of James, God promises to grant wisdom to those who ask Him for it. There's no reason we can't pray for wisdom about gratitude, about being grateful for what He's done for us or given us.

I think that might go a long way to not taking things for granted or toward not necessarily having "to lose it all" in order to appreciate what's in your life. I haven't lost my parents, but I appreciate them, for example.
