Review: POP 2 shows a disregard for pop as its known, with Charli XCX gleefully deconstructing convention

Charli XCX continues her polarizing alliance with the PC Music label delving deeper into ‘future pop’ on her second mixtape of 2017.

Aimee Armstrong
Aimee Armstrong 14 Dec, 2017
Review: POP 2 shows a disregard for pop as its known, with Charli XCX gleefully deconstructing convention

The musical career of London born Charli XCX is twisted and inverted to the point where an implosion feels imminent. She finds herself on a pedestal, surrounded partially by her poptimistic original fan base, and partially by her chums from the PC Music label. Founder of said label, A.G Cook, whom she references on 'I Got it', is only credited for production on a sole track, 'Out of My Head' on POP 2, however the songs here, texturally are PC Music’s post EDM deconstruction amplified to a million.

The tape is the follow up to Number 1 Angel from earlier this year, a comparatively simplistic record which relished in recrafting the classic verse/chorus structure. POP 2 (also referred to as pop2) however shows a certain disregard to the strands making up pop music’s DNA. Although still harboring the same accessible grooves and emotive climaxes- everything is mutated. The addition of a ‘.0’ to the title would be more evocative of the record’s nature, a semi cybernetic upgrade of the most tried, tested and profitable form of contemporary music.

To peruse the ambition of synthetic pop progression Charli incorporates a sundry ensemble which includes names as disparate as MØ, Mykki Blanco and Kim Petras. Opening with an overdue collaboration with fellow ex-chart topper Carly Rae Jepsen, the pair gloss a woozy and strange sonic pallet, something that at times wouldn’t feel out of place of on Rustie’s Glass Swords Oneohtrix point never Garden of Delete.

Throughout the track list, XCX, with two fingers up, becomes the embodiment of the artificial pop diva her cynics would paint her as. Almost every track is saturated in layers of auto tune - creating a robotic personality with an uncanny appeal. However, this trite use of vocal manipulation can become jarring particularly within the back to back slow burn of 'Lucky' and 'Tears'. Ultimately stalling the project elapsing in a 5th of its run time.

Robotic voice modulation and seemingly AI developed choruses have led XCX to criticisms like “two-dimensionalizing of women”, relevantly, 'Femmebot' would seemingly portray Charli as some male aimed sex toy. This, however, shows a lack of understanding of PC Music’s underlying commentary gender expectations. SOPHIE, Hannah Diamond, QT and XCX all strive to mimic the feminine stereotypes. For all its deconstruction, melodramatic balladry and black mirroring. POP 2 is fit with dancefloor ready junctures, the fieriest cut of the bunch being 'I Got It', which manages to be sensual yet gnarly. Charli mumbles the title cyclically over the chorus before verses from Brooke Candy and Cupcakke crash through.

POP 2 is perplexing throughout. Cuts to silence and haphazard switching of rhythm make it constantly disorientating. With the exception of the chart beckoning 'Out of My head' with Tove Lo, every track here has the structure of subverted pop destined for the decades beyond.

Rating: 7.5/10

Eva Cassidy’s posthumous “Acoustic” commemorates late singer

Image result for Eva Cassidy

Eva Cassidy fans all over the world are ecstatic about the release of a new album commemorating the late artist. “Acoustic” contains 20 of Cassidy’s remastered solo recordings.

Brief life and legacy of Eva Cassidy

Her young life taken far too soon by cancer, Eva Cassidy was a legend before her time. With only her voice and a guitar, she had the ability to interpret a variety of standards from various genres. But it wasn’t until after her death at only 33 years old that her music was released to the greater public. Her friends and family had a deep desire to honor her memory. Their love for the late singer pushed them to ensure that not only would her music be remembered, but that her story be told. Today, she is immortalized by her music, which has grown quite a following since 1997.

Cassidy was painfully shy, but she didn’t let stage fright hinder her love of performing. She would frequently play in public, and as a result, developed a cult following. Cassidy’s most famous stint at Blues Alley birthed a live-recorded album, “Live at Blues Alley.” She then went on to record “Eva by Heart,” released a year after her death by producer Chris Biondo in 1997.

Eva Cassidy and the musRelated imageic industry

Cassidy was beginning to turn the heads of curious record label executives. But for them, her ability to cover so many different genres was a problem. She was almost too talented. They simply could not figure out where to place her. Pop was an easy choice, but her folksy, grassroots style left her unmarketable in a world full of cookie-cutter music. And so the record companies were at a standstill. Their time to make a decision would be cut short as Cassidy died of melanoma in 1996.

Success and Eva Cassidy

When Blix Street Records released “Songbird” in 1998, they had no idea it would become her best selling album nearly two years later. The album reached platinum status four times over and also went gold in the US and Australia, as well as other countries.

Out of this album came Cassidy’s best-known renditions of classic songs, including “Songbird” and “Fields of Gold.” But perhaps her best-known song to date is the hauntingly beautiful “Autumn Leaves” recorded at Blues Alley in the same year of her death.

The years following would bring more album releases including “Imagine,” “Simply Eva,” “The Best of Eva Cassidy,” and “Nightbird.”

Cassidy’s love for her craft kept her going through the most painful days of her illness. Once, when asked if she felt well enough to perform, her response was simple:

“I have the easiest job in the world. All I have to do is sing and play the guitar.”

The chanteuse has long been laid to rest, but her memory remains alive in her music. Listen and remember a legend with a voice of pure gold taken far before her time.

Album review: PROJECT MAMA EARTH – Mama Earth

PROJECT MAMA EARTH – Mama Earth

Provogue [Release date 10.11.17]

The thematically titled ‘Mama Earth’, is an all-star collaboration featuring Joss Stone on vocals, Nitin Sawheny on guitar, Jonathan Joseph on drums, Etienne M’Bappe on bass and Jonathan Shorten on keyboards.

It’s a stellar line-up that takes its cultural point of departure from the ancient Cameroonian rhythms of Mangambe and Bikutsi in particular and funk in general, while drummer Jonathan Joseph’s drive and spark explores the full gamut of Afro rhythms.

He generates the kind of spontaneous combustion that jammers can only dream about, while Joss Stones’s ethereal phrasing is a perfect foil as she twists and turns the grooves to her own ends.

‘Mama Earth’ challenges given musical genres and takes the leap of faith that wherever the creative muse goes, the musicians have the ability to follow.

The histo-cultural traditions that underpin this project have in part been explored before in the jazz field, but not with the same open ended approach.

The album grows by degrees and builds from the opening solid arrangement of the title track, on which everyone plays their part in an funky rhythmic tableaux well suited to Stones’s contemporary r&b style. There’s a Latino feel to the horns and an unexpected tempo change, confirming the band’s adventurous approach.

‘Interlude 1′ is the first of 5 conceptual interludes that helps colour the bigger picture, before we are into ‘Waterfall’ which has a more straight ahead rock feel, as Stones’s vocal swoops and impassioned performance works hard to make a connection with juddering rhythms.

‘Spring’ opens with a different rhythmic pattern and ushers in more Stones extemporisation over bv’s and a sparkling horn arrangement .

Unsurprisingly, given the spontaneous approach not all the album consistently reaches the heights, but as we get deeper into the album, everything starts to gel, particular on ‘What Would You say’ when her phrasing comes to rest on some stop-start jazzy guitar lines, cymbal crashes and funky rhythms.

There a delicate lightness of touch from the rhythms section which at times has the compressed feel of early 70′s Billy Cobham. Stone flutters over deep bv’s and the band works up the deepest groove so far, via judicious horn parts, while she lyrically poses the question: ”If the earth had a tongue what would she say?”

In between a combination of slick changes andcool Steely Dan style horns she subtly shifts from frontline to bv’s and back again.

The running water and percussive chimes (or are they cow bells?) of ‘Interlude 4′ anchors the theme of mother earth, before ‘Entanglement’ – arguably the best track on the album – on which she really comes into her own with some expressive phrasing as she celebrates the interconnectness of everything on an aptly titled song.

The ensemble playing on this track moves from the meticulous to the inspirational with celebratory stuttering rhythms and nuanced bv’s, as Stone delivers her eco- philosophical message: “we drink from the river, we flow with the tide, we meet where our dreams worlds collide.”

The whole album is encapsulated from the 2 and half minute mark of a track when the all -star ensemble morphs into one with a seamless musical focus.

It’s moments like this that are frequently romanticised, but all to rarely achieved. But there’s more, as some delicate bird song and an acoustic interlude serves to draw us into the meditative ’Breath’. It’s the perfect meeting of subtly voiced rhythms – a tabla and fretless bass style sound – melded with an evocative vocal which demands total immersion in the music.

Whether by design or not, this concluding track feels like a natural resolution to what’s gone before. The band gently percolates as Stone phrases emotively and the band slips into the fade all too quickly

‘Mama Earth’ is a very ambituous and honest album. Up to the half way point it’s a well played mix of Afro fusion with r&b trappings which you might file under well played and worthy. But then something special kicks in on ‘Spring’. And as the textures and colours bubble up, the horns kick in and Stones effortlessly hits a top note, the whole project slips up a gear. A subtle drop-down of dappled bass notes, muted trumpet and gentle voice bursts forth into the defining line: ”Spring has sprung on me”, as the music directly evokes the celebratory mood of the lyrics.

The end result is that the ensemble sounds more organic, and the only down side is that they didn’t have more time to do more, for once they light the fuse Project Mama Earth sparkles with celebratory intent. ****

Music in My Heart -- Pride's first record since 2011's Choices

Charley Pride / Music In My Heart (2017) Living Country music legend Charley Pride is celebrating his 50+ years as a recording artist in 2017 with an all-new music album! In 2016, Pride began crafting many new recordings with artist-songwriter Billy Yates acting as his new creative partner and producer. Yates, a highly-acclaimed, traditional Country artist and songwriter, is renowned for penning "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" and "Choices" for the legendary George Jones, the latter of which helped Jones land a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Yates has enjoyed a few hits himself, but has also contributed songs to many other fellow Country artists including George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Chris Young, Rhonda Vincent and Sara Evans. The magic of the Pride/Yates collaboration is self-evident on MUSIC IN MY HEART, an unapologetically traditional Country album that marks a high-level return to form for Pride. Die-hard Country music fans will find the song repertoire to be of unquestionable pedigree, with gems from highly regarded tunesmiths such as the late Merle Haggard, Whisperin' Bill Anderson, Tommy Collins, "Country" Johnny Mathis, Ben Peters ("Kiss An Angel Good Morning"") and Yates underpinning the effort. Features the songs "New Patches", "That's The Way It Was In '51" and "Standing In My Way".

Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer: Not Dark Yet review – a majestic sister act

4/5stars
(Silver Cross/Thirty Tigers)
Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer
Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer: ‘delicate and harrowing’. Photograph: Jacob Blickenstaff

Sibling harmonies are so central to country that it’s remarkable that sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer have not sung together before, pursuing parallel glittering careers instead. Their voices interweave majestically on cover versions that stretch with surprising ease from bluegrass to grunge. Country stars such as the Louvin Brothers and Merle Haggard are an easy fit for the Alabama-born pair. Less expected is the gothic croon of Nick Cave’s Into My Arms, while the Killers’ My List and Nirvana’s Lithium are reframed from rock anthems to piano ballads. The one original, Is It Too Much, addresses the scars left by their father’s murder of their mother and subsequent suicide; a delicate, harrowing piece.

Gene Simmons has revealed the full 166-song track list for his new Vault Experience box set. You can see the listings for all 11 disks below.

Later today (Jan. 6), in Los Angeles, he'll personally give out copies of the collection and spend one-on-one time with purchasers. He'll make similar appearances around the world through July 2018, and you can see the full list of dates and get complete details on his website.

Gene Simmons Vault Experience consists of previously unreleased recordings that he's made over the past 50 years, including with past and present members of Kiss. It also includes an embossed gold foil commemorative book of rare photos and a "Gene Simmons businessman action figure" and an oversized coin bearing the motto "In Gene We Trust."

Two months ago, we premiered "Hand of Fate" from the Vault Experience, and he told us that he decided to release his archives in this manner because "fewer and fewer people are going to stores, record companies are broken, people are downloading and file-sharing, and I didn’t want my songs to go out that way. That’s like smoke and mirrors ... popcorn farts. You can’t feel it, you can’t touch it, the art of it isn’t there. So I decided to put out a physical box set -- probably the most expensive one ever, and the largest. And the only way people can get it -- there are only going to be a few thousand made -- is through GeneSimmonsVault.com. This has never been done before. Because I’m blessed and I can afford it, I’m physically going to be going around the world and hand-delivering the vault into the fans' sweaty palms."

Gene Simmons Reveals Entire 166-Track Listing For 38-Pound Box Set ‘The Vault’

The KISS legend’s supersized box set contains unreleased music from the past 50 years—and it only costs two grand.

FRAZER HARRISON / GETTY IMAGES

Gene Simmons has released the entire list of tracks included on his long-awaited limited edition set box set, The Vault. The KISS bassist posted the list of 166 tracks included on the five decades in-the-making set. The Vault contains 11 discs and is a must-have for diehard fans of the legendary rocker. The set can only be purchased on Simmons’ website and is not available in stores. Simmons plans to make personal appearances in several major cities to hand deliver The Vault to his fans.

The Gene Simmons Vault Experience consists of 166 previously unreleased recordings made by Simmons over 50 years, from 1966 to 2016. Some of the tacks include collaborations with members of Kiss as well as cameos by famous friends like Bob Dylan, Joe Perry, and Eddie and Alex Van Halen. In addition to the plethora of music, fans will get collectibles including a commemorative photo book and a Gene Simmons action figure.

In an interview last year with Ultimate Classic Rock, Gene Simmons explained why he was releasing his archive of work in such an unusual way.

“Fewer and fewer people are going to stores, record companies are broken, people are downloading and file-sharing, and I didn’t want my songs to go out that way,” Simmons told UCR. “That’s like smoke and mirrors…You can’t feel it, you can’t touch it, the art of it isn’t there. So I decided to put out a physical box set — probably the most expensive one ever, and the largest. ”

Simmons revealed that only a few thousand copies of The Vault will be made. And because he’s “blessed and can afford it,” Gene will travel around the world to hand deliver the set to his most loyal fans. The base price for The Vault is $2000, with higher priced “experience” packages set as high as $50,000.

Gene Simmons previously told the Domenick Nati podcast that he will flyto fans’ locations on his own dime to personally hand deliver the massive Vault set.

“As a thank you to the fans I’m gonna get on a jet and come to your doorstep along with other fans in the area at a convenient time and a convenient place and I’m going to hand deliver The Vault to you,” Simmons said. “You get your Vault for two grand and then I fly on a jet and I go to see you. There are other things you can do, like a Gene Simmons party at your home, or you can go to the studio and be a producer.”

Gene Simmons’ first pit stop to deliver The Vault is at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles on Jan. 6.

Los Angeles! Ready to get your Vault and meet the Demon himself, @genesimmons? There's still time to get yours! http://www.genesimmonsvault.com

In an interview on KSHE 95’s “Hair Jordan” show, Simmons described The Vault as “literally and physically the largest box set of all time.”

“[It stands]three feet tall,” Simmons said, ” You need two arms to wrap around it and two arms to pick it up, ’cause it’s over 38 pounds. It has metal hardware, metal wheels. I’m really proud of it.”

Swing Out Sister’s ‘Almost Persuaded’

Swing Out SisterOne of the nicer things that happened to me in 2017 was an encounter with Corinne Drewery and Andy Connell, otherwise known as Swing Out Sister. The circumstances — the funeral in Grimsby of Corinne’s dad, the lead singer and bass guitarist with the R&B band in which I played during the mid-’60s — could have been happier. But it was fun to tell her about the band, about the nights we supported Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Tom Jones, and about how Rae, her dad, was always on at me — quite correctly — to stick to a simple backbeat rather than trying to lay Elvin Jones licks all over the 12-bar blues of Jimmy Reed and Howlin’ Wolf.

It was some time after Swing Out Sister registered their first big hit, “Breakout”, in 1986 that I realised I had a tenuous connection to the girl with the Louise Brooks bob and the great pop-soul voice, whom I had seen as a very small child more than 20 years earlier. It took another 30 years for us to meet again, and to have a conversation which revealed the depth of the love and knowledge of music that she and Andy share.

When I saw that their 10th studio album, Almost Persuaded, was being self-released via PledgeMusic before Christmas, I signed up. The product of three years of thought and work, the CD arrived a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been playing it almost non-stop ever since, enjoying the way the duo create and sustain an escape into a neo-Bacharachian world of romantic elegance. The settings for their poised melodies and lyrics feature cool grooves, beautiful keyboard textures, deft horn flourishes and the mentholated sounds of vibes and (synthetic) strings. The music makes you feel that you’re sitting in a penthouse lounge, looking down on the lights of the city, with the first drink of the evening in your hand.

There’s no irony in play here, which is one of the reasons I like it so much. It’s a kind of uptown pop music that flourished in the era of Dee Dee Warwick’s “When Love Slips Away”, Lou Johnson’s “The Last One to Be Loved” and the Forum’s “The River Is Wide”, but with updated components and a modern sheen. In other words it’s civilised escapism, pure and simple, designed to carry you into a different world.

The arrangements soar and swirl and sigh, restrained by fine judgement from excesses of lushness or sentimentality. There are hints — and they are only ever hints — of Francis Lai and Michel Legrand, of blaxploitation soundtracks and early Eurodisco. The best song, the gorgeous “All in a Heartbeat”, comes in two versions, and the second of them sounds like a classic to me, switching from restrained verse to ecstatic chorus with a heart-lifting rush that reminds me of Corinne’s deep affection for Northern Soul.

From start to finish, Almost Persuaded is beautifully conceived and artfully crafted, and is warmly recommended to anyone who fancies slipping into a seat in that penthouse bar, high above the city lights.

Rick Springfield Explores His Blues Side on New Album 'The Snake King': Exclusive

Rick Springfield

Maybe he's still pining for "Jessie's Girl," but Rick Springfield has got the blues -- at least on record. The Grammy-winning rocker is releasing The Snake King, his first blues-oriented album, Jan. 26 via Frontiers Music SRL.

“All my first bands that I played in as a kid in Australia were blues bands, trying desperately to copy as best we could the amazing music we were hearing coming out of the Chicago blues scene and the older stuff from the deep South,,” said Springfield in a statement. “My guitar playing was always influenced by the same guys who influenced all the English players I grew up with, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, etc. Everyone was playing their version of what they heard from the Southern Blues and the Chicago scene.”

Springfield, who has scored 17 top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, has incorporated a handful of his original blues tunes on the road the past two years on his “Stripped Down” tour, and that led to the full collection. “The blues songs are so much fun to play, and they got such a reaction from the audience that I started thinking about including some of that vibe in my next album,” he said. "And with the shape of humanity’s struggle against this amazing planet, I wanted the album to be more lyric driven, so, for better or for worse, it produced The Snake King.”

As track “Little Demon” shows, the album gives Springfield a chance to show off a grittier side that he has often displayed in concert and, at more than five minutes, the song lets him stretch out on the bluesy guitar breaks.

There will be a limited-edition vinyl version of The Snake King available exclusively through Frontier Records’ website. It marks Springfield’s first vinyl issue since 1988’s Rock of Life.

Fans can pre-order the album, Springfield’s 19th studio set, at http://radi.al/TheSnakeKing.

Springfield, who appeared in Dave Grohl’s Sound City documentary and has penned two New York Times best-selling books, has logged considerable time on big and little screens lately. He played opposite Meryl Streep in the late Jonathan Demme’s Ricki & The Flash, plus a multi episode arc in HBO’s True Detective. Springfield also played the devil in the CW’s Supernatural and recently was seen in an episode of American Horror Story.

The Snake King track list:
1. In The Land Of The Blind
2. The Devil That You Know
3. Little Demon
4. Judas Tree
5. Jesus Was An Atheist
6. The Snake King
7. God Don’t Care
8. The Voodoo House
9. Suicide Manifesto
10. Blues For The Disillusioned
11. Santa Is An Anagram
12. Orpheus In The Underworld

Good, really good love their sound and love the frontman's voice, but I have yet to find their lyrics.
