When I last spoke with Jessie Ware two years ago, her debut album Devotion had yet to chart in 10 different countries and whirl her around the globe on tour. “I'm just having fun and trying to pretend I'm a pop star, really,” she said then.
And the workaholic singer’s forthcoming second album, due out later this year, has the potential to bring her modern take on smooth soul to even bigger audiences.
“Tough Love”, which was recorded during a rare two-week touring break last spring, is marked by a deep sense of longing and inspired by the trails of maintaining a long-term relationship while jumping from continent to continent. “It's not always easy being away from the person that I love so much, but I’m also doing something that I really, really love,” she says. “It's realistic that it's not always real easy.” As is the trend with Ware’s life nowadays, though, there is a happy ending to this story: She is set to marry her longtime boyfriend on a cobblestoned Greek island later this summer. I was pleasantly surprised that this first single is more of a downtempo track—it draws you in rather than demanding your attention. I can't go more downtempo than that. I had just finished a busy American tour, and I was hanging out with BenZel for two weeks in New York last spring to suck it and see what happens. So we ate loads of Momofuku—f**kin' love that place—went out, had fun, and wrote some songs that cemented our relationship with this record. BenZel are like family now, they're like my brothers and I'm their annoying sister, and we want to kill each other, but we adore each other. You'd think that it could've been one of the most daunting groupings, because Benny is ridiculously successful, but it was the most fabulous relationship I've had with two producers. Not intimidating at all. Which also has to do with me understanding the artist I want to be.
Thanks to the success of Devotion and the hitmaking caliber of some of your collaborators—like Miguel and Ed Sheeran—on the new record, it seems like you’re in a good position for gaining an even bigger audience. Does that weigh on you? Would you want that? I mean, I'm fucking lucky that I get to do this as my job—and it definitely feels more like a job this time around, no doubt. At first I was like, [child's voice] "Oh my God, this is great! Sing to people! Having a band!" And now, touring is a job—but it's a wicked job and I love it. I just want to be able to do another album. And if more people know me, that would be lovely, because it means the music is getting out there. In the meantime, I've got a wedding to plan and shit to do, so while this is always going to be an amazing job, I'm very realistic about it. How’s the wedding planning going?
Well, I didn't kill my mother this week—I can't help but put all my nervous energy into stressing about a wedding! I'm getting married in Greece on an island that I've been going to since I was little. So yeah, I'm going to be a wife, which is probably going to be no different than being a girlfriend, but we'll have a good party. The schlep for people to get there is unbelievable, so I'm very lucky anybody is bothering even coming. How would you compare it to the photos from KimYe’s wedding? I loved their photo booth! I am definitely going to try and copy their “just married” photo. I just need someone to bring me those leather jackets in the schvitzing heat in Greece in August. I love Kanye and Kim Kardashian so much. But there's no bloody flowers in Greece at that point, so we definitely won't be able to have a wall of peonies.
And then we were going to go to this romantic spot high up on the island, but we had to walk up all these bloody stairs. I'm already schvitzing. It's hot. I don't want to take the stairs. And he's like, "We're taking the f**king stairs." And I'm like, [gasps] "OK." Bless him. He had a ring and he proposed. I don't think he even got to propose—I snatched the ring out of the box before he even asked. I was like, "I'll have that." It was gorgeous and sweet and kind of perfectly imperfect, and that's probably how we are.

Charli XCX Turned Down A Christina Aguilera CollaborationBy Jason Lipshutz, N.Y. | July 01, 2014 5:30 PM EDT "She's cool, but it just wasn't right," says the songwriting phenom of Xtina.Charli XCX is still sharing the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 chart with Iggy Azalea, as "Fancy" spent a fifth week atop the chart last week. The U.K. singer-songwriter guested on another Top 10 smash, Icona Pop's "I Love It," last year. Sadly, however, she had the opportunity to forge yet another collaboration -- with Christina Aguilera -- but passed on said opportunity."I've passed up on many a thing that could have made me a big artist or something," XCX says in a new interview with Popjustice. "Like I was offered a feature on a Christina Aguilera song and I turned it down. It just wasn't right. She's cool, but it just wasn't right."Other revelations that the "Boom Clap" singer dropped in the sprawling interview: her full-length follow-up to last year's "True Romance" was supposed to be a "punk album," but that album -- which was finished -- has been scrapped for something more radio-friendly.
"I was over the music industry, I was over all of it. And I went to Sweden and made a punk album," she explains. As for what will actually come out, XCX says, "I've made a pop record. I think it'll be completely finished by the end of July, I'm not doing any more writing sessions now … I still want to put out all the stuff I did in Sweden. That is going to happen at a later point."Charli XCX on 'Fancy' Fame: 'I Feel Valued'So who has Charli been working with on this new album? "Weezer, Rostam from Vampire Weekend, Stargate, John Hill," the singer-songwriter lists. The 21-year-old also worked with Dr. Luke, but on material for another (unnamed) artist, not her own album."Boom Clap," XCX's single from "The Fault In Our Stars" soundtrack, has peaked at No. 29 on the Hot 100 chart. The singer confirmed that the single will indeed appear on her as-yet-untitled next album.. . Released in Feb 2014The Queen Of Soul creates a rich musical portrait of Franklin s incomparable run at Atlantic Records between 1967 and 1976. Packed with 87 songs arranged chronologically, the set opens with generous selections from the first five studio albums she recorded for the label I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Aretha Arrives, Lady Soul, Aretha Now, and Soul 69. Recorded between 1967 and 1968, all five of the albums topped the R&B charts and gave the world classics like "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Chain of Fools," "Think," and the #1 smash "Respect." The set also mixes in several rare outtakes of songs like "It Was You" from Aretha Arrives and "Talk to Me, Talk to Me" from Soul 69.

Richard Marx, 'Beautiful Goodbye': Exclusive Album PremiereBy Brad Wete | June 30, 2014 12:35 PM EDT Singer-songwriter Richard Marx has done plenty during his illustrious nearly 30-year career. There’s been classic single’s like “Right Here Waiting” from his 1989’s “Repeat Offender” album. And to this day, he is the only male artist in the history of the Billboard charts to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 of the Hot 100.Lately, though, Marx got in a songwriting groove that led him to today, the eve of his new album "Beautiful Goodbye” being released."I wasn't really intentionally 'making an album,'” Marx tells Billboard of the set, out July 8. “I was, as is usual, writing songs with a variety of other artists for their projects, and writing my own songs in-between, when I realized a few of the latter really fit well together, and so I kept going in that direction. The album is musically diverse in that it draws influences from everything from EDM to Sade to Chopin to Antonio Carlos Jobim.” Listen to the album exclusively here on Billboard:As far as content and vibe, one word likely describes "Beautiful Goodbye” best: sexy. Marx explains, “it's mostly a series of songs about seduction, sex, and the mystifying sensual dance between two people. His two current favorite songs on the set are “Whatever We Started” and “Beautiful Goodbye.” “These choices may change daily,” he adds, “but at this moment, it's those two. They're both heavily influenced by some of the EDM I've been listening to the past few years, especially trance stuff. That's very sexy music to me.”Check out the album and let us know what you think of "Beautiful Goodbye” on Facebook and Twitter.Listen to some tracks here: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6141112/richard-marx-beautiful-goodbye-exclusive-album-premiereTracklist:

The main reason radio sucks so much, they do not play new music, except for certain college stations.
Radio is so conservative and numbers heavy. You hear the same 100 songs over and over. Really scary. The public doesn't seem to care.
If I hear Man In The Box one more time I will barf.
We have a great new band here in Cincy named Nevele. They do a jam band, progressive thang:
Smooooth. This could be a hit. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Many artists can recall their earliest childhood inspirations, when their career path became clear, but that wasn’t the case for soulful PHOX frontlady Monica Martin.
In eighth grade, the Baraboo, Wis., native imagined one day owning a hearse. By 18, she realized she had no career aspirations whatsoever.
She lived with her grandmother, drifted through high school, and was discouraged from pursuing anything creative.
But she was halfway good at bowling, which got her hanging out with musician upperclassman Matt Holmen. The day he accidentally overheard her warbling along to a radio tune, everything changed.
Martin’s self-worth grew along with her newfound songwriting skills.
“Parking will be tough,” she admits. “But I’ll probably go the distance and get alternative fuel for it, and then have a bumper sticker on it that says ‘I’d rather be on my bicycle!’” [Edited 7/8/14 11:15am]

'World Peace Is None Of Your Business'July 06, 201411:03 PM ET 56 min 4 sec
Greg Gorman/Courtesy of the artist
The rhetorical essence of punk is the decision to say what others believe should not be said. It points out the "" lurking within or near every "yes." It demands an ongoing reckoning with true outsiders, and with what remains wrong in society despite everyone's best efforts, simply because people and the structures they make are flawed. By this definition — more philosophical than musical — Steven Patrick is the greatest punk rocker ever to spit in a queen's eye. Morrissey would likely be horrified that a critic would call him a punk at 55 (or at any age, really); his music with and throughout his long solo career is so much more melodic and eclectic than what that term often invokes. Yet with his 10th solo album, World Peace is None of Your Business, he reasserts punk's impropriety as the force that makes his music inimitable. World Peace is sweepingly powerful and effortlessly transgressive. Morrissey is in fine mature voice, belting with gusto and going gentle without strain. His touring band provides wide-ranging support in arrangements that incorporate everything from Portuguese to lounge-music cool to rock grandiosity. Longtime guitarist Boz Boorer is the anchor; Gustavo Manzur, on keyboards and percussion, is the utility player pushing the sound. Producer Joe Chiccarelli makes it all cohere, giving Morrissey room to emote within the wash of musical elements. The title track of World Peace is a directly political song, an angry shout of empathy for those suffering in hot spots from Egypt to Ukraine. But it also decries the value of protest, or any kind of engagement with the system as it stands. "You poor little fool," he hectors kindly at those who would hold signs or even . Pop protest songs usually offer uplift, dwelling in alternate realities. Punk ones like this say: No future, as things stand, for you. This is Morrissey's way — demolition through critique. The Smiths-like "Staircase at the University" depicts the suicide of an academically overpressured student. "The Bullfighter Dies" celebrates human loss in the name of animal rights. "Kick the Bride Down the Aisle" passes (arguably too-cruel) judgment on its female subject within a critique of wedded bliss. The Burt Bacharach-like "I'm Not a Man" lists everything Moz finds execrable about masculinity, ending with a bitter cri de coeur: "I'd never destroy this planet I am on! What'ya think I am, a man?" But wait: To those who say we can transcend such roles, Morrissey offers the sweet heartache of "Earth is the Loneliest Planet," a Latin-flavored lament for someone stuck within gender dysphoria, feeling like a failure as both a woman and a man. His character sketches prove Morrissey's commitment to real human diversity — not the shiny rainbow kind, but the sort that gives voice to irredeemable misfits, to mean people, to criminals. "Mountjoy" reflects on the history of one of Ireland's best-known prisons from the perspective of an anonymous prisoner who can "only cry when I see the sky." The equally devastating "Istanbul" captures the guilt-ridden voice of a father who has lost his son to gang violence. These portraits, like so many Morrissey has written, stay where it's painful, and in doing so are profoundly compassionate. In middle age, Morrissey may feel the need for some compassion himself. "Oboe Concerto," the album's closing set piece, brilliantly blends pique at the human condition — the oboe in the lyrics (musically represented, eccentrically, by Boorer's clarinet and sax) represents unsettling thoughts, like a hated song "stuck in my head" — with a rueful awareness of mortality brought on by the recent loss of close friends. A feisty drum solo leads not to catharsis, but to Morrissey muttering, for half a minute, "round, round, rhythm of life goes round." He's not affirming anything. He's just being realistic, saying what has to be said. Tracklist:
