woot! She's on my uncle and auntie's label. I haven't really loved any of her albums, but I think she's good enough to get a bit more recognition than she does.

Indie: Lilla Releases “I Changed My Mind” Video off New Album ‘The Awakening’

Lilla The Awakening cover600x600

It’s an exciting time for indie R&B/Soul artist Lilla. One week after graduating from Berklee College of Music, she released her second self-produced album, The Awakening. Over the summer she hit the festival circuit, appearing on main stages across both coasts. Backed by her hard-hitting band and armed with a collection of soulful original tunes, few modern performers bring the class, presence, and talent that Lilla brings to the stage.

The Portland, Oregon native has played in many different countries, from Kingston, Jamaica to Beijing, China, working with an impressive array of artists including Ciara, Damian and Stephen Marley, Talib Kweli, Esperanza Spalding, Wu-Tang Clan, Annie Lennox, Willie Nelson, Carole King, Kenny G, and Boyz II Men.

Recorded all over the map, from Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studio in Jamaica to Lilla’s home town of Portland, her new album The Awakening is a celebration of the power of music and its ability to connect musicians, cultures, and people from around the globe.

She has now released the feel good, free spirited music video for her new single “I Changed My Mind.”

Check out the video and more of Lilla’s music below:

Johnny-Gill-HipHollywood

Johnny Gill is prepping for the release of his upcoming album Game Changer, due out this December, and he recently sat down with HipHollywood for a new interview. One of the surprises on the album, that fans will be happy to know, is that New Edition will be making an appearance.

“My brothers, New Edition, we have a song on there with all of us, “For Me & You,” and it’s like just a grown folks song,” said Gill.

But, according to the R&B veteran the group had so much fun recording the song that they have decided to go back into the studio and work on a whole new album together.

“We’re actually just tryin to get the scheduling together to start goin in, I have about 4 songs I had brought to the table that the guys like, that we are gonna get get started on recording, and then we want to definitely visit Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis which is where its all been for us, making them a part of our lives and apart of this journey as we move forward,” said Johnny.

This would be New Edition’s eight studio album, but in the meantime, look out for Johnny’s 7th solo album, Game Changer, which hit stores on December 9.

Joss Stone and Jeff Beck record 2014 Official Poppy Appeal Single

3 November 2014

On sale now ! Help it get to No 1

Grammy and Brit Award singer Joss Stone has teamed up with guitar legend Jeff Beck to record this year’s official Poppy Appeal single.

The single is a soulful cover of 'No Man’s Land (Green Fields of France)', written in 1976 by Scottish-born folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle. Reflecting on the grave of a young man (Willie McBride) who died during the First World War, its chorus refers to two famous pieces of military music, 'The Last Post' and 'The Flowers of the Forest'.

Although the song speaks of the destiny of one soldier in particular, the song was chosen by Joss and Jeff because of the way it honestly reflected the terrible fate of so many.

Joss Stone said: "The song is about a soldier, Willie McBride, but when we started looking into who Willie was, we found no less than three men that it could have been - then we realised that finding him was not actually as important as what he and this song stand for, peace and the sacrifice made by so many."

The song, which also includes a full gospel choir, has been given a classic Joss, soul makeover and features the legendry guitar of Jeff Beck. The pair will be performing the track in front of Her Majesty the Queen at this year's Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 8 November 2014. The Festival of Remembrance will as usual be televised live on BBC1, following a record 6 million viewers last year.

The Poppy Appeal is The Royal British Legion's largest annual charity campaign. In a little over two weeks, some 45 million poppies will be distributed by 350,000 dedicated collectors with the aim of raising £40 million.

The Royal British Legion's Director of Fundraising Charles Byrne said: "The Legion created the Poppy Appeal to help those returning from the First World War. A century on from the start of that conflict, we're still helping today’s Armed Forces families in much the same way, whether coping with bereavement, living with disability, or finding employment.

"The Poppy is more than just a sign of Remembrance it is a symbol of inspiration and hope. We are thrilled that it has inspired two of our country’s greatest musical talents to produce such a wonderful tribute to the memory of the fallen and help us raise funds for the future of the living."

No Man’s Land (Green Fields of France) was produced by world renowned producers Jon Cohen and Jonathan Joseph.

The Legion have also worked with augmented reality app Blippar to produce an interactive single cover. When the cover is Blipped, additional special features such as behind the scenes footage, the music video and personal messages from Joss appear on the user's smartphone.

Just when you thought Nick Jonas’ single “Jealous” couldn’t get any hotter, Tinashe turns it up on the official remix.

The pop heartthrob and R&B sensation get hot and steamy as they duet on the sensual song.

“You’re too sexy, beautiful and everybody wants a taste / That’s why I still get jealous,” they sing.

The original song can be found on Jonas’ self-titled album, which drops November 10 featuring appearances from Demi Lovato, Mike Posner, and Angel Haze.

New Album-Length Tribute to Paris from Zaz feat. Aznavour, Quincy Jones, More

zaz 2

The enormously popular French pop singer Zaz has just announced a new album for worldwide release in November featuring many major guest appearances from international music icons.

The album, a tribute to the many songs and personalities of Paris finds Zaz in the musical company of such stars and luminaries as Charles Aznavour, the bassist John Clayton, singer Nikki Yanofsky, and producer Quincy Jones. A lifelong lover of jazz, this is Zaz’s first album backed by a full big-band.

Legendary 90 years-old singer, songwriter, and actor Aznavour charmingly describes his collaboration with Zaz on “Paris in May” as “zaznavouresque”.

In recent years, Zaz has been one of France’s most successful international music exports, selling over 3 million copies of the her first two albums, with legions of fans in over 50 countries, from Chile to Egypt, Germany to China …

In August 2014, she completed a world tour where she sold out shows on five continents.

The first single, in the preamble to the title that will appear on her third album, says the link between the past and this Paname Paris to present in which lives intensely Zaz.

If Maurice Chevalier sang Paris will always be Paris under occupation, “the song still draws the city’s free-spirited” indicates Zaz.

Even in the darkest periods of its history, Paris remains the city light that attracts her, all those who want to believe in their dreams, where everything seems possible.

Ashanti is getting us into the holiday spirit with a brand new Christmas album entitled, A Wonderful Christmas.

The GRAMMY Award winning singer/songwriter told Arise Entertainmene 360 she decided to do a holiday album after being approached by Target who liked the Lifetime Christmas movie, Christmas In The City, she’s starring in later this year.

At the time, only five songs from the movie were available online. So to produce a complete album, Ashanti recorded 10 more songs.

The album includes one original song, “Can’t Wait For Christmas,” and for the first time ever also features her entire family on a song, in the background of “White Christmas.”

The complete track list for A Wonderful Christmas includes:

1. Sleigh Ride
2. Can’t Wait For Christmas
3. Christmas Love
4. Let It Snow
5. It’s Christmas
6. Give Love On Christmas Day
7. Christmas Is
8. The First Noel
9. Santa Baby
10. White Christmas

When asked about her fondest Christmas memory, the singer/songwriter said, “For me it was the Christmas that I was able to buy both my parents brand new cars.” It was also one of the first times she saw her dad cry.

Be on the lookout for Ashanti starring in the movie Stuck, out some time in 2015. It’s about six people of different ethnicities stuck in a subway car in NYC and after certain stereotypes come out, we see not only how far we’ve come, but how we still have a ways to go.

A Wonderful Christmas is available exclusively through Target and can be purchased online here.

Check out the video of her entire video above.

On their gorgeous new album, Harmony Is Real: Songs for a Happy Holiday, The Living Sisters —Eleni Mandell, Becky Stark, Inara George and Alex Lilly— have created a musical gift so jubilant that it could make even Scrooge break out the eggnog.

The album’s 12 cuts feature the quartet’s sterling, four-part harmonies cascading over lilting melodies that celebrate all facets of the holidays from the naughty to the nice.

Recorded in Los Angeles, Harmony Is Real: Songs for a Happy Holiday consists of the Sisters’ shimmering arrangements of holiday classics, “Jingle Bells,” “Little Drummer Boy” and “Silver Bells,” as well as nine sprightly seasonal originals. “It wouldn’t be a real holiday record without a few standards,” says George. “But we all wanted to take a swing at writing some too.”

From the retro cover photo to the radiant harmonies, Harmony is Real is as comforting and warm as a winter fire’s glow. Even the new tunes have an instantly familiar sensation. “I wanted this record to already feel like it was part of people’s lives for a long time, before it even came out,” Lilly says. “We wanted the record to have both the weight and the festive kitschiness of a classic holiday record.”

Working with Grammy-winning producer Sheldon Gomberg, The Living Sisters recorded their vocals together live whenever possible. “It feels so good to sing together in harmony,” Stark says, adding that they strived for emotion over perfection. “We don’t sing perfectly but it’s like organic produce: it has spots on it, but it’s a more natural process.”

The album opens with “Harmony is Real,” an introductory tune written by Stark that serves as an angelic invitation to the quartet’s exquisite vocal blending. “Harmony is such a beautiful principle for any sacred time and holidays are our most sacred time,” Stark says. “That’s part of the fun of this record: that harmony is ideal and it’s real.”

The Sisters intentionally made an album that appeals to all people, not just those of a specific faith. Mandell’s charming “Neon Chinese Christmas Eve” celebrates the time-honored Jewish tradition of eating Chinese food over the holiday, while her jazzy “Hanukkah” heralds the Festival of Lights. “There are just not that many good Hanukkah songs,” Mandell says. “This isn’t a religious record and we are very inclusive; the song comes from a place of goodness and love.”

As does the entire album. Spreading good cheer was the goal, especially to those for whom the time of year brings sadness. “We’ve all experienced some of that melancholy for the holidays,” says Mandell. “We hope ‘Harmony is Real’ can help people be happy if their holidays are bad,” Stark adds. “A song can really lift your heart.” Even when it’s George’s deceptively upbeat “Merry Happy Christmas.” “The holidays can be really magical, but they can also bring out a real darkness in people,” George says. “Maybe I wanted to touch on that.”

Holiday spirits can’t help but be buoyed by Lilly and George’s jangly “Christmas In California,” which tips its hat to “The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album” and The Muppets’ version of the Beach Boys’ classic, “Little St. Nick.” Lilly found more recent inspiration in The Waitress’s “Christmas Wrapping” for “Skip The Sugar (Good Girl).” “The horns on that song are somewhere between ska, Christmas, and Mariachi,” she says. “I don't think UB40 ever wrote a Christmas song, so I wanted to write what I think they would've written.”

For the women in The Living Sisters, the sisterhood is a gift that gives year-round. “It's such a rewarding experience because you put in a handful of songs and get back a whole record because there are four songwriters,” Lilly says. “Each song felt like a present.” “Living Sisters is a wonderful miraculous thing in my life,” Stark adds, expressing a sentiment echoed by all four women. “I can’t believe I have the opportunity to sing with these beautiful women in harmony…Hopefully, it feels as good to hear it as it is to sing it.”

On this most traditional of Holidays, it should be of no surprise that people want maintain a good measure of the tried and true. So while the gifts will be shiny and new, much of what makes Christmas such a special time are the sentimental feelings that the holiday evokes. Christmas is the holiday that reunites family members and friends as people often reconnect with those whom they haven’t seen since the previous December, if not longer.

Those memories and emotions stirred up by Christmas probably explain the endurance of holiday music. Look, songs can mess with our collective heads. Whenever I hear Maze’s “Happy Feeling” I’m always transported back to a simpler time. So while the understandable reaction would be to be cynical when an artist such as Maysa Leak releases A Very Maysa Christmas, she probably enjoy singing “Joy To The World” for the same reasons that we enjoy hearing and singing to tune.

Maysa loves music and she loves to sing. She just happens to be a very good singer. Before Maysa stood 20 feet away from legends such as Stevie Wonder, became a star in her own right as the best known (and in the opinion of many, the best) lead vocalist for the band Incognito, and released a string of acclaimed and award winning solo albums, she was probably singing the songs that she records for A Very Maysa Christmas during her formative years in Baltimore.

Maysa’s mezzo soprano contains a come hither sultriness and an element of jazz that have long served the artist well on secular love songs that have become her stock and trade both as a solo artist and a key member of Incognito, and she finds a few opportunities to use both qualities on A Very Maysa Christmas. A duet with Will Downing transforms “This Christmas” from a celebration of family into a narrative of an intimate night for two. She drops touch of Latin tinged jazz in the one original cut, “It’s The Holidays,” a tune she co-wrote with Chris “Big Dog” Davis. This is another romantic number that finds Maysa deploying her seductively smoky vocals to the theme of connecting and/or reconnecting with the special people – and especially that special person. Her rendition of “Christmastime is Here” maintains the mix of anticipation and melancholy that captures the spirit of the version first heard in A Charlie Brown Christmas. The mini-medley that combines a spoken word version of the Clemet Moore poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” with Maysa’s soulfully swinging rendition of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” encapsulates the spirit of frivolity, anticipation and fear contained in both pieces, and she proves to be a jazz singer at heart right down to her channeling of a scatting Ella Fitzgerald on her translation of “Silver Bells.”

A Very Maysa Christmas contains a mix of secular holiday tracks and religious numbers such as her midtempo rendition of “Joy To The World” that fuses an R&B instrumental arrangement with a gospel choral arrangement, while “The First Noel” merges a contemporary R&B/hip-hop arrangement with Maysa’s jazz tinged vocals.

So while A Very Maysa Christmas will get categorized as a holiday record, the best compliment that listeners can give this project is that it’s a Maysa album. And that makes for good listening at any time of the year. Recommended.

Tracklist:
01 – Joy To The World
02 – Jingle Bells
03 – The First Noel
04 – The Night Before Christmas-Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
05 – Silver Bells
06 – This Christmas
07 – It’s The Holidays
08 – Christmas Time Is Here
09 – The Little Drummer Boy
10 – Pray For Peace

Doobie Brothers Feel Right at Home With Country Crowd

By Chuck Dauphin | November 06, 2014 5:36 PM EST

The Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers

Jim Rink

Band talks new album 'Southbound,' featuring Blake Shelton, Sara Evans & more country stars.

This week, the legendary Doobie Brothers released a brand-new album called Southbound, which pairs the iconic band with some of the hottest stars of the country format, such as Blake Shelton, Sara Evans and Chris Young. At Wednesday night's CMA Awards, the group had two triumphant performances, showcasing their new country camaraderie.

"It was brought to us by David Huff, who is a producer on the album," Doobies member Tom Johnston told Billboard of how Southbound came to be. "He and Fred Croshal cooked this up. As it was told to me, Fred said, 'You have such a catalog of songs that could fit in the country genre. You should try this.' David brought it to is while we were in a hotel room on the road and asked if we would be interested in doing it. We asked who he had in mind, and he gave us a couple of names, and I said, 'Sure, if you can get them."

Johnston says he loved the idea of a fresh approach. "It was interesting from the start -- the fact that we never re-recorded any of this stuff. If we were going to do that, to do it in a different genre was one of the selling points, because if we were just going to redo them, what would be the point? We all agreed that it would be a good idea, then we got in the studio, and it turned out great." He said watching the musicians do their thing was a highlight of the recording process. "They are so good, and they worked so fast. Two takes, and it was done."

Michael McDonald Talks Do...ntry Album

The group's Patrick Simmons echoed Johnston's thoughts about the musicians in Nashville. "The sonic thing they created was kind of unique. They stuck to the original form of the songs, but their different instruments together gave a different tinge to the project."

Fellow Doobies member John McFee agreed with the assessment that some of the group's music might very well be considered country today had they gotten their start in recent years. "Country has definitely incorporated some elements that were once considered rock -- like distortion on guitars and some of the sonic elements -- but some of the music like 'Black Water' would be at least Americana, if not out-and-out country. So there's always been that element in the music, and that's one of the reasons that some folks probably thought this would be a good idea, and actually would work -- which it did."

One track that works particularly well is "You Belong to Me," which features Johnnyswim's Amanda Sudano Ramirez -- the daughter of Donna Summer. "Michael [McDonald] knew her when she was a little child. He had known her for years," said Simmons. "She's probably the most outside the scope of this. Michael had Vince Gill singing originally on it, and I don't think he felt that the two of them singing back and forth on 'You Belong to Me' was going to work," he admitted with a laugh. "So Vince played guitar on it."

Another of the younger generation that made an impact on the Doobies was Charlie Worsham, of whom Johnston said, "He's a bad boy. I was hanging out with Scott Hendricks and John Esposito at Warner Bros., and they were playing me some of their new artists. When he came up. I thought he was really good. I don't know anything about him or who he was, but out of all they played, he was the guy. They gave me the album, and I took it over to David, and I said, 'This is the guy that needs to do "Nobody."' He played banjo, mandolin, and his singing was incredible. He just knocked me out of the park. I was really happy with that one."

Southbound marks the first time since 1976 that leads Johnston, Simmons and McDonald were all involved with the Doobie Brothers. What was the synergy in the studio like with McDonald? "Every time we see him, even if it's been a year or two, it's like it has been no time at all," Johnston said. "It just feels like yesterday." McFee adds: "He's kind of talented too. He brings a lot to the party. It was good to get a chance to do some music with him again."

One aspect of making the album that amazed Johnston was that each of the artists and musicians had a story about how much they had listened to the Doobie Brothers' music. "That was humbling. We didn't know. We had no idea, and that started with the studio guys. Every one of them made a point to say something along those lines. That's the thing about being in this business from genre to genre, you don't get to mingle with each other -- particularly if you tour a lot. You sometimes get to find out that you had an impact on people that you didn't even know about."

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Keep Shelly in Athens - "Fractals"
members: RΠЯ and Myrtha

SoundCloud

"Fractals" is the smouldering new song from the Greece-based duo that will doubtlessly leave most listeners wondering if they've travelled back to the 1980s.
