Super Bowl Bounces Bruno Mars Up Billboard Charts

Super Bowl Bounces Bruno Mars Up Billboard Charts

Bruno Mars performs during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show at MetLife Stadium on February 2, 2014 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Theo Wargo/FilmMagic

Mars' second album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," flies from No. 18 to No. 7 on theBillboard 200 chart with 42,000 -- up 180%, according to Nielsen SoundScan. His first album, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," jumps from No. 82 to No. 19 with 16,000 (up 303%).

Both albums rise in the wake of less than one full day of impact from the Super Bowl -- as the new sales tracking week finished on the same night as the game. Mars' sales could increase further next week, after a full seven days of sales are generated after the big game.

The impact of the Super Bowl on Mars' music sales -- and on the Billboard charts -- is unique compared to all other halftime headliners in the modern era of Super Bowl halftime entertainment.

Since 1993, when Michael Jackson headlined the halftime festivities, the main performer on the show has generally been an act with a fairly deep catalog of albums and songs. Mars, however, has only released two albums -- "Unorthodox Jukebox" (released in 2012) and "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" (2010).

Thus, all of the sales and chart impact felt by Mars will be concentrated on just those two albums (and their respective singles). Unlike previous years, where everyone from Beyonce and Madonna to Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen saw their post-Super Bowl chart impact spread across multiple albums and songs.

Last year, Beyonce headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, where she was briefly joined by her Destiny's Child group members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Unlike Mars, Beyonce didn't have a current album riding high on the charts at the time.

In the week ending February 3, 2013, Beyonce saw her most recent album, 2011's "4," re-enter the Billboard 200 at No. 100 with 4,000 sold (up 123%). The following week -- after a full week of sales impact was felt from the game -- the album climbed to No. 79 with 6,000 (up 59%).

In terms of digital songs sales, Mars has 10 of the top 200 selling songs of the past week, led by "Locked Out of Heaven," which he performed at the Super Bowl. "Locked" re-enters at No. 32 on the Digital Songs chart with 54,000 downloads sold (up 134%), while "Young Girls" also re-enters at No. 41 with 46,000 (up 94%). He also returns to the chart with "Just the Way You Are" at No. 47 with 41,000 (up 285%).

Below the chart -- but among the top 200 sellers -- he gains with "Treasure" (38,000; up 105%), "When I Was Your Man" (33,000; up 75%), "Gorilla" (15,000; up 56%), "Runaway Baby" (13,000; up 627%), "Count On Me" (10,000; up 171%), "Grenade" (10,000; up 75%) and "Marry You" (10,000; up 60%).

Red Hot Chili Peppers, who joined Mars on the former's hit single "Give It Away," also dent the charts this week. "Give It Away" sold 10,000 downloads for the week (up 620%), while the Peppers' "Greatest Hits" re-enters the Billboard 200 chart at No. 41 with 9,000 (up 445%).

Behind the Scenes with Stars at the Super Bowl

February 03, 2014

ET's Rob Marciano was behind-the-scenes at the Super Bowl and caught up with the stars who were on hand for the big game.

Rob interviewed celebs as they arrived at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, and was on the field during the game and halftime show performance with Bruno Mars. While Bruno didn't stop to do interviews after the show, his brother, Eric Hernandez, did speak about the performance that also included the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

"The reality is this is the biggest stage ever. So we all knew that, but we had to treat it as it's a normal show," Eric said. "We trained for it, we've been out here for a week, we played out there in the cold... I think we pulled it off today, it feels really good."

Has The Superstar Torch Been Passed To Bruno Mars?

Perhaps the artist with currently shines brightest is Bruno Mars , who just capped off a winning Superbowl half-time concert that brought him a level of exposure that could hasten his already accelerated race to the top. In a scintillating performance, Mars showed the craft and confidence that could well cement him as a superstar for years to come.

To some degree, Mars (real name Peter Gene Hernandez) was both a stretch and a risk for the National Football League. After years of presenting long-established stars like Paul McCartney, Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Madonna and Beyonce (who graced the stage last year) for their Superbowl half-time shows, having someone who hasn’t quite attained such legendary status caused some to question the wisdom of the NFL’s choice. In order to hedge their bet, the League added California funk-rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers to the bill for one song. This actually turned out to be a fit since Mars has credited them as a major influence in the past, and their music, while more agressive in nature, meshed well with Mars.

Still, Bruno could have easily carried the show by himself, as he proved with his excellent high-powered performance. After selling 10 million albums in just a three year period (quite a feat in this new music business world we currently live in), with four #1 records, 18 Grammy nominations (!!), more than a billion YouTube views, and a well-earned reputation as an spectacular performer, the NFL should have stuck to their initial plan and let the man do his thing sans guests.

That said, the 12 minutes of exposure before 100 million television viewers might have been worth $100 million in publicity to Team TISI +0.31% Mars. Although it’s true that Superbowl half-time performers are only paid expenses (which can still amount to a substantial sum), that airtime on the biggest stage of the year is probably the only such venue that can actually turn a star into a superstar, and we’ll soon see if that happens in Mars case.

I believe that superstardom for Bruno Mars was inevitable anyway. He and his team now regularly create the very thing that first and foremost crates a music superstar – great and memorable songs. One measure of how successful his songwriting has been is that not only has Mars songs worked for him as an artist, but he has also written big hits for Cee Lo Green, B.o.B, Flo Rida and others as well. Plus, the man packs some serious talent into an attractive package (as evidenced by his drumming to open the show – he’s got some chops!) with a clean persona that makes him extremely media friendly. You can make a star via social media today (and Mars has exploited that venue well), but superstardom can only take hold with the help of the mainstream media.

In the coming weeks and months, watch the profile of Bruno Mars rise to new heights that few of his contemporaries have yet to achieve. In a way, it was truly fitting that he shared the Superbowl stage with the Chili Peppers. Through their appearance, the torch has indeed been passed.

Here is a SUPER RARE video of a 13 year old Bruno (then Hernandez) talking about his love of performing and what his future aspirations are (get my grades up, go to college, become a famous entertainer--hey Bruno 2 outta 3 aint bad! lol)

Also has footage of him performing with his dad's band The Love Notes. He had the same talent, confidence and great stage presence that he displays now back then as well. He was born to do this!

Bruno Mars Heading for Top Three on Billboard 200 After Super Bowl

By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 07, 2014 5:44 PM EST

Bruno Mars, who earned the largest TV audience ever for a Super Bowl halftime show last weekend, is now aiming to return to the top three on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

His Super Bowl show on Feb. 2 was the most-watched halftime performance ever, with an audience of 115.3 million U.S. TV viewers, according to Nielsen.

With all those eyeballs tuned in, it's not a huge surprise to see that his second album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," is aiming for a big jump on next week's Billboard 200 chart. The set might sell 70,000 to 80,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Feb. 9, according to industry forecasters.

That should place it firmly in the top three on next week's Billboard 200 chart, along with the arriving "Now 49" album (aiming to sell around 80,000 to 85,000) and the "Frozen" soundtrack (80,000 to 85,000 as well). The top 10 of next week's chart will be revealed on Wednesday, February 12.

This past week, which reflected the sales week that ended on day of the Super Bowl, "Unorthodox Jukebox" vaulted 18-7 on the Billboard 200 with 42,000 (up 180%).

His first album, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," will also see a big sales increase. It's heading for perhaps 25,000. This past week, it jumped 82-19 with 16,000 (up 303%).

Tickets for Bruno Mars' Hawaii Shows Sell out Fast

Tickets for three upcoming Bruno Mars concerts at a Honolulu arena sold out in less than two hours, setting a record for the venue.

Out-of-staters bought 42 percent of the 17,000 tickets for the Hawaii-born singer's April shows, while locals snapped up the rest. The out-of-state purchases were made by people on the mainland and Canada, according to the Blaisdell box office, Ticketmaster and credit card ZIP code information.

Most of the tickets were sold on the Internet or by phone, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Friday (http://ow.ly/toxJS).

The shows at the Blaisdell Center Arena are scheduled for April 18, 19 and 21. Tickets for the Hawaii shows and more than three dozen other concerts that are part of Mars' spring-summer tour went on sale the morning after his halftime Super Bowl Sunday show.

Ticket sales started at 9 a.m. and set a Blaisdell sellout record by 11 a.m., according to the Star-Advertiser. Hawaii was the last city to open its box office.

Local promoter Tom Moffatt said he hadn't experienced a sellout like Monday's in his 50-year career.

Only 6 percent of the tickets were bought at the box office, according to Ticketmaster.

Even though Blaisdell officials cautioned that standing in line wasn't the best strategy, several hundred people waited at the box office Monday morning.

"The Internet sells tickets much faster," said John Fuhrmann, events and services administrator for the Blaisdell complex. "A person walks up to the box office and says hello, and I have probably sold seven rows (online) in that amount of time."

Moffatt expressed nostalgia for standing in line for concert tickets.

"I would like to go back to the old-fashioned system where they line up and that's how the tickets are distributed," he said.

Bruno Mars sellout wasn't just in Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii wasn't the only place where Bruno Mars sold out concerts. Ticket sales for his "Moonshine Jungle Tour" of the U.S., Canada and Mexico resulted in the third-busiest day in Ticketmaster history for online and phone traffic.

"It's supposed to open at nine o'clock to go online and purchase tickets. We logged on at 9:08 and it was sold out. No luck," said fan Charlayne Dacanay Ranchez, who tried to get tickets when they went on sale Monday.

The entire Bruno Mars tour went on sale nationally, with over 35 dates, on Monday. Those sales were boosted from Mars' Super Bowl halftime show the day before, watched by more than 115 million people.

Mars has also sold out shows at the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden, among others. Four years after his last show in Hawaii, Mars is now a global superstar.

What is irking Hawaii fans is seeing tickets for his Honolulu concerts on sale online for up to thousands of dollars. "It's not just any mainland operation, it's local people, too, from right here at home, selling their tickets, or trying to, for a profit," said promoter Tom Moffatt.

In one case on Craigslist, someone is offering to sell tickets for 75,000 Hawaiian Miles each. That's worth nearly two round trips on Hawaiian Airlines to the West Coast.

Moffatt also warns that there are some tickets on the re-sale site StubHub that may be fakes. "Some of the seats we've seen mentioned on Stub Hub, for example, aren't even available and were not sold to anyone," he said.

He also insists that Ticketmaster's sales protocol is fair. The company sells seats by phone, the Internet and in person, all at the same time, first-come, first-served.

Moffatt said, "Nothing about Bruno Mars was done any differently than has been done for dozens of shows at the Blaisdell since Ticketmaster's been in place. There was simply a huge demand for a small supply of tickets."

There's been no decision yet on whether there will be a fourth concert. But Moffatt said, "For any show, the best strategy is for buyers to go online as much as possible to order tickets. That is the best strategy on the consumer side for any show, but especially popular ones like Bruno's."

Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox Album Projected For No.1 Return

Njai JoszorMonday, February 10, 2014 Comments (0)

Bruno Mars' album "Unorthodox Jukebox" is set to claim the top spot on this week's album chart.

Some fourteen months after its release in 2012, the "Locked Out of Heaven" led album is projected to what it didn't all those months ago and that is obtain the no.1 spot on the Billboard 200.

Trusted sources say the album could sell up to 80,000 copies by the end of the tracking week, besting both new and older releases, including new music from Toni Braxton, Babyface and Beyonce.

According to Billboard, the Super Bowl's 115.3 million audience has also been snapping up copies of Mars' debut album, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans." That album is projected to sell another 25,000 copies by the end of the tracking week.

Interview w/Bruno:
After facing criticism in the press, Bruno Mars decided to speak out on “Ellen” with a powerful message to aspiring young musicians.

For her classic hidden camera prank, Ellen sent a nurse into Bruno Mars’ dressing room for a medical session she'll never forget! Check out what happened, here!

On a serious note, this is the great speech Bruno gave, he was addressing his critics who criticized him being picked for the Super Bowl Halftime show:

That was, by far the most disgusting thing I've heard. Not because it was taking a shot at me. I was thinking about aspiring young musicians who wanna do this...

Listen, all, young aspiring musicians out there. If music is what you wanna do. If music is what you love, your passion... It doesn't take a fragrance, it's not about the tabloids. It's about you, your hard work, practicing everyday. Practicing your vocals, practicing your instrument, and practicing your songwriting.

Hopefully, one day you write a song, the whole world wants to get down to. I promise you. One day you will have your moment to shine, and you're gonna have a lot a people saying you can't do this, and you not good enough. But I promise you, if you go out there and sing, put your heart and soul into it nand you follow your dream... One day, you gonna be sitting next to Ellen talking about how you broke records and rocked the Superbowl... I DID IT!

Bruno Mars Responds to "Disgusting" Super Bowl Backlash on The Ellen DeGeneres Show

While many applauded Bruno Mars for rocking the Super Bowl stage sans any over-the-top spectacle and just letting his killer vocals shine, the 28-year-old singer still received a fair amount of backlash after his performance at the big game.

The "Locked Out of Heaven" crooner addressed the criticism during his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing today, Feb. 10, where he gave an inspirational speech to the audience about pursuing your dreams after slamming critics who claimed he didn't have enough star power for the Super Bowl stage.

"How long did you rehearse for that?" Ellen asked the Grammy-award winning performer.

"Months," he replied. "As soon as we got the call I was thinking about ideas and, you know, how are going to pull this off? It's the biggest stage on Earth."

The funnygal then asks the pop star if there was ever a moment when he questioned performing at such a massive event, following in the famous footsteps of iconic stars such as Beyoncé, Madonna and U2.

"No, like how do you say no? Nah, nope I'm good," he says with a laugh. "It was, I know it was early; it's very early in my career. I've only got two albums, so I don't have the legacy or anything like that, but you don't know you know? Tomorrow's not promised, Ellen, so I had to go for it."

Sounds like the right attitude—although Ellen also addressed some of the unfortunate backlash.

"Yes, but you know, you may not have more than two albums, but you write hit after hit after hit," she said, complimenting the accomplished performer. "Every song that you write everyone knows your music; everyone sings along to your songs, you have beautiful songs. And what I could not believe, I didn't talk about this with you backstage, but it's hurtful because there were people that were saying and I know you listen to some of this which you should never listen to it, but the New York Times wrote an article saying that."

"What they say?" Bruno interjected.

"You know, you know what they said, but they basically didn't think he was a star," the talk show host explained. "They said he wasn't a star because he wasn't in the tabloids and he doesn't have a fragrance...He's not ready and it's too big for him and he couldn't do it and he pulled it off I think beyond what anybody…" Ellen said before Bruno fires back at the haters.

"I did. I did hear that and I think that was by far the most disgusting thing I think I've heard. Not because it was taking a shot at me, but I was thinking about aspiring young musicians who want to do this and even hearing the thought you need a fragrance or something like that is just is, you know what I would like to make a little speech and talk to them about this. Can I? Can I do that?" he asked before making a heartfelt speech.

"Listen. Any young, aspiring musicians out there, if music is what you want to do, if music is what you love and your passion. It doesn't take a fragrance, it's not about the tabloids, it's about you putting in the work, practicing every day, practicing your vocals, practicing your instrument, practicing songwriting," he said. "Hopefully one day you write the song the whole world wants to get down to and I promise you, I promise you one day you're going to have your moment to shine and you're going to have a lot of people saying that you can't do it and you're not good enough. But I promise you, if you go out there and sing and you put your heart and soul into it and you follow your dream, one day you're going to be sitting next to Ellen DeGeneres, talking about how you broke records and rocked the Super Bowl. Stand up America!"

Cue the Rocky anthem as a beaming Bruno Mars rushed the audience.

‘Bruno Mars Act’ would forbid scalpers from snatching up tickets to Hawaii shows

Bruno Mars has had the attention of the entire nation this year since performing in the halftime show at the Super Bowl, and that includes the Hawaii Legislature, which may name a new law after the Hawaii-born pop star.

Currently circulating in the Legislature, the “Bruno Mars Act” would forbid people from using computer software programs to circumvent security on a ticket-seller’s website in order to buy in bulk. House Bill 2012 would also forbid people from scalping tickets.

And Senate President Donna Mercado Kim thinks Hawaii residents got the shaft last week when it came to getting tickets to Mars’ Hawaii concerts.
Kim sent out a statement Monday morning saying that she has introduced a resolution requesting that ticket sellers only offer the tickets at the box office during the first 48 hours after they go on sale.

Kim offers this reason: the tickets for the three concerts scheduled for April at Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena sold out in two hours.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported 42 percent of those sales were made to people on the Mainland and in Canada and only 6 percent were bought at the box office.

“If you’re a loyal fan standing in line to purchase a coveted concert ticket and plan to attend that concert, you should be able to have more that six percent of a chance to purchase ticket,” Kim said in a statement.

Senate Resolution 12 applies to the Hawaii Community Development Authority, Stadium Authority, Department of Enterprise Services of the City and County of Honolulu, Board of Regents, President of the University of Hawaii and Chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Kim said all hold events at the Blaisdell Center, Kakaako Park, Aloha Stadium, Waikiki Shell, University of Hawaii Stan Sheriff Center and the Hawaii Convention Center.

The Bruno Mars Act...I like that! And I'm all for stopping these legitimized scalpers 3rd party ticket resellers!

Rio 2' Director On Janelle Monae, Casting Bruno Mars: 'We Felt We Could Push It'

By Phil Gallo, Los Angeles | February 13, 2014 5:31 PM EST

Janelle Monae's participation in "Rio 2" owes to a meeting two years ago between the singer and director Carlos Saldanha at a Rock in Rio performance.

"She had a few Brazilians in her band and I think that helped when I asked her if she wanted to sing in the sequel," Saldanha told Billboard after a presentation Feb. 13 of clips from the film on the Fox lot. "The music was much more integral to this movie and we started much earlier on the music."

The music for "Rio 2" includes Monae's "What Is Love" that opens the film and includes new songs from Bruno Mars, his Smeezingtons bandmate Philip Lawrence, and Kristen Chenoweth, who gets to unleash her Broadway pipes on a ballad and during Jemaine Clement's samba-flavored rendition of the Gloria Gaynor disco hit "I Will Survive."

Saldanha became interested in casting Mars -- it's his first voiceover role -- after seeing him on "Saturday Night Live." After working with Mars, he rewrote his character to make him less macho and, after a recording session, had a segment reanimated to fit his singing. "He pushed it in a way that said 'this is the character' and we felt we could push it," Saldanha said of the revisions.

Atlantic Records will release the soundtrack around the time the film opens in theaters, April 11. Producers-composers Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown reprise their roles from the first film as does composer John Powell.

Saldanha said the film would most likely have 12 songs, all of them rooted in traditional folk music of northeastern Brazil as the film is mostly set in the Amazon. A 12-member Sao Paulo band that uses only vocals and body percussion, Barbatuques, contributes to the score and songs.

"It's a different kind of music from the first one, which was mostly samba," Saldanha said. "It's multicultural and represents Brazil and the USA. We looked at folk dancing and folk songs of the region. Sergio and Carlos have great ears and they make sure everything is done (rhythmically) the way it's done in Brazil.
