festival

The most anticipated music event of the summer is back for its fifth year with an unprecedented lineup featuring three of the world’s top musical artists: Eminem, Bruno Mars and Arcade Fire. Virgin Mobile Presents The Squamish Valley Music Festival, produced by Live Nation Canada in partnership with festival creators brand.LIVE Management Group, takes place at the Logger Sports Grounds and Centennial Fields in Squamish, British Columbia, August 8, 9 & 10, 2014.

Overall investment in the Squamish Valley Music Festival is in excess of $12 million for 2014. “This event represents a turning point not only for BC’s live music industry, but also for Canada’s event industry as a whole,” says Paul Haagenson, President, Live Nation Canada. ”To date, Squamish is Eminem’s only Festival announcement in 2014, and will be his first western Canadian show in more than a decade.” Headliner Bruno Mars picked up the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album this past weekend and will perform at the 2014 Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show, while Arcade Fire has gone from Canada’s little secret to global superstardom.

“It’s a huge coup to be able to offer this caliber of talent to music fans in our region,” says Haagenson. “Not only that, we’ve created an event that is welcoming top international talent while at the same time generating significant economic revenue for the District of Squamish and province of BC. We anticipate music fans will come from around the region, across Canada and the Pacific Northwest to enjoy our unparalleled Festival experience.”

Squamish Valley Music Festival has expanded onto the Centennial Fields, allowing the event to increase its footprint from 32 acres to 81 acres, safely accommodating more than 35,000 guests per day, up from 19,000 per day in 2013.

Executive Producer of the Squamish Valley Music Festival and Vice-President of brand.LIVE, Paul Runnals says, “Our campgrounds and Festival site have been expanded and we’ve worked very hard to ensure that this year’s experience will be efficient, safe and enjoyable for all involved. We’ve engaged the best in the business to ensure that Festival-goers will be able to enter and exit the event smoothly and any impact to Squamish residents will be minimized as much as possible.”

The event has been working with the same transportation expert who oversaw the entire transportation program for VANOC during the 2010 Games. “We are confident that our overall event plans, will ensure this event runs smoothly in key areas of transportation, onsite accommodation, security and impact to the community,” says Runnals. “We feel we have one of the most breathtaking locations in the country and with the convenience of being only 40 minutes from downtown Vancouver, we know that this event will continue to generate significant tourism and economic benefits to British Columbia and specifically throughout the Squamish region.”

“Today’s music landscape consists of fans who take in all genres and are as passionate as ever about discovering new artists,” says Erik Hoffman, Live Nation Canada Vice-President of Talent. “This year’s programming will speak directly to these fans. The line-up represents exactly what is happening in music at this moment and will feature an amazing mix of artists from around the globe alongside the best emerging talent from our own backyard. We couldn’t be prouder of who’s coming to our party.”

“As presenting sponsor, we are extremely excited to be part of the Festival’s growth over the past three years. With this extraordinary talent lineup, 2014 will be the Festival’s biggest year yet,” says Kevin Campbell, Director of Brand Experience, Virgin Mobile Canada. “Virgin Mobile Members will get the chance to be part of the ultimate VIP access starting with our presale February 3.”

Squamish Valley Music Festival has engaged Blueprint Events, western Canada’s leading Electronic Dance Music (EDM) promoter, to curate the Festival’s newly redesigned EDM arena.

The event is also expanding its use of an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) enabled wristband system. Ticketholders will receive their RFID wristband via registered mail in the weeks leading up the event and must register online to activate it. The RFID system will allow for smoother, more efficient access at gates, faster processing for all onsite transactions and will allow Festival staff to better assist guests.

“We’re pleased to announce that our RFID system also allows us to be the first fully cashless festival in Canada,” says Runnals. “This will speed up service times at beer gardens, food vendors and merchant sites around the grounds. Guests can load their RFID wristband with credit prior to entering the festival grounds, and will have multiple options to add credit if necessary.”

Weekend passes to Virgin Mobile Presents The Squamish Valley Music Festival go on sale Friday, February 7 at 10:00 am. Tickets will be available at Ticketmaster. Virgin Mobile Members presale starts Monday, February 3 at 10:00 am and ends Thursday, February 5 at 4:00pm. Members who purchase a Festival pass will receive a $20 credit applied to their RFID wristband, while quantities last. Visit www.virginmobile.ca/benefits to see the exclusive access and deals available for Virgin Mobile Members.

Wanna Be a 'Billionaire': Bruno Mars and Travie McCoy Sued Over Copyright

Demetrius Orlandus Proctor says he's owned the 2010 hit since 2011

January 29 2014, 8:00 PM ET

With a fresh Grammy under his belt and a Super Bowl Halftime Show on his horizon, Bruno Mars is about as "in the limelight" as a guy can get — especially one whose last album came out in 2012. But while Unorthodox Jukebox continues to win big for the pop-maker, an older song that he worked on is now causing some trouble. On Tuesday, a man named Demetrius Orlandus Proctor filed a lawsuit claiming he holds to copyright for the Travie McCoy team-up, "Billionaire."

McCoy, Mars, and the latter's Smeezingtons writing partners Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine are all named in the suit, submitted to a Maryland federal court on January 28. Proctor says he's owned the copyright to the music and lyrics of the track since March 31, 2011, though the song was released in March of 2010 and became an immediate hit. Back then, Mars toldBillboard the idea for the song came to him while he was on a project in England with a minuscule budget.

"Me and Ari Levine went out to London to work on producing and writing for an artist. We had per diems, so they gave us £250 [about $350] each to live off of for 11 days," he said. "And everything there was so expensive. We were like, 'Is this the biggest mistake we've ever made? We thought we were broke in California; what are we going to do here?' So we've got no money, and I'm walking the streets and came up with, 'I wanna be a billionaire, so frickin' bad.'"

Fans have noted a strong musical similarity to Sub...Santeria," but Proctor, a Washington D.C. has nothing to do with that composition. Instead, he's submitted as evidence a certificate of registration from the United States Copyright Office for something called "Frisky Vol. 1 to 30 (Tapes)," which was evidently made in 2000. It's unclear what relation that document has to "Billionaire," but we have an email out to the plaintiff.

Proctor claims the defendants were "willful and intentional" in infringing upon his copyright, maintains that he has the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute the work in question, and requests that "Defendant shall destroy all copies of Plaintiffs ' Recording that Defendants have downloaded onto any computer hard drive or server without Plaintiffs' authorization and shall destroy all copies of that downloaded recording transferred onto any [other] physical medium or device."

Why I Love Me Some Bruno Mars

Posted: 01/31/2014 5:08 pm

By Cynthia Dagnal-Myron

I'm only watching the Super Bowl for ONE reason this year:

Bruno Mars.

Let me give you some background on that.

I grew up on Chicago's Southside in the late 50s and early 60s. So, I'm old enough to remember when Stevie Wonder was Little Stevie Wonder. Old enough, like Van Morrison, to know what "Jackie Wilson Said." So old that I was there when Old School was new.

But I have a pretty open mind. I was, after all, a rock critic back in the 70s and 80s. My daughter loves to show her friends pictures of "Mom" with Steven Tyler and Roger Daltrey and all the other rockers I hung out with back then. I love seeing her friend's jaws drop, too.

But when I agreed to go to a Bruno Mars concert with her, I wasn't entirely sure I was ready.

Cute kid, yes. And I know a catchy chorus and tasty turn of phrase when I hear one -- he's a little hit machine if there ever was one. But I quit going to concerts right about the time I quit reviewing them. After five years of almost non-stop concert going I had definitely bopped 'til I dropped. Out. Completely.

And most of the other artists she likes haven't hit me where I lived. They're not supposed to.

Don't get me wrong--I still crank up the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails so loud that she yells at me to turn it down.

So I agreed to go along and have a look at this guy. And when we got there, my first impression was that I'd made a serious mistake.

Our section was full of really young girls, many also accompanied by their mothers and clutching all kinds of Mars merch. Some had bedazzled their own fan shirts and other gear. And next to us, a gaggle of gigglers was squealing over... everything about the boy.

Now, my mother had to take me to see the Beatles back when because my friends and I were only, say... 11 or 12 in their heyday. And I realized, as I looked around at all the little teeny boppers in our section of the stadium, how brave she'd been.

Bruno has squealy girl fans, but the Beatles had an insane girl posse -- I heard ONE chord at the start of both Beatles shows I attended. ONE chord, followed by a deafening wall of"Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" that never let up.

Of course, I didn't care one bit. I was in the presence of John Lennon, the man I loved, even if I couldn't hear a damned thing he said or sang. Love is, at that age, both blind anddeaf. Dumb? Well... yeah, kinda.

So there I was smirking at all the little Bruno babes when the "pre-show" playlist began. And damned if it wasn't about as Old School as me. I was sorely tempted to bust out with some sit down versions of the dances that went with them.

But I didn't want to embarrass daughter dearest the way I had at the theater when I heard "Knee Deep" during that Keenan and Kel movie -- Good Burger, I think it was. I love me some Parliament-Funkadelic, too.

Finally, the whole stadium lit up with what I have to admit was one of the most impressive "star reveals" I've seen in a long time. And soon I was a little girl at the Regal Theater again--the place where I saw Little Stevie Wonder, a totally unknown and even littler Michael Jackson, James Brown and many more. Many times.

Mars can crazy leg like Brother Brown, to be sure. And he's not a poseur. This kid grew up on doo wops and deep R & B. And like the soul brothers and sistahs of old, Bruno worked that stage. Back in those old days, the aisles would have been packed with girls and guys gettin' on that good foot right with him.

Most of the little girls squeeeeeing their heads off for Bruno didn't "get" some of the little nods to those days and to days not so long ago. The music he referenced was probably not part of the suburban slumber party circuit.

But oh, boy, did I remember bein' out there on the floor with the whole fam-damily, moving to the music Mars was weened on, too, apparently. Those inevitable "Soul Trainline" scenes at the end of almost every black "family" movie really did happen. And I wriggled my little hips down plenty of 'em.

So I saw a different show than the little screamy girls, because I was there when that pompadour he sometimes sports was all the rage. And somehow, his parents managed to take him back there, too. So that he could take us back there and also know it well enough to successfully mix it with something new of his very own.

He lost his mother not so long ago, bless his heart, but I am sure she'll be right there with him at halftime this weekend. She knew what a little doo wop'll do, if you learn how to work it right.

You done good, Mom. And here's to ya' Bruno. See you at the Super Bowl.

Why this year’s halftime show will be first of its kind

When Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers take the field at MetLife Stadium on Sunday for the hotly anticipated Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show, organizers urge the crowd to stay in their seats and use their heads — literally.

“We are essentially creating the largest ever LED screen in the stadium,” said Ricky Kirshner, whose New York-based company Touchdown Entertainment tackles the halftime bonanza from staging, lighting, sound production and also televising.

“Everyone will get a wool hat with a built in LED screen in their warming package under their seat cushion. We’re asking for audience participation. People, please don’t leave your seat.”

The technologically advanced fashion will result in 800,000 pixels, turning the stadium into one of the biggest LED screens ever made.

“It will take up the entire stadium. It’s the first time we’ve done anything like this. If you were to look at the Grammys where there’s a backdrop, this extends that backdrop to the entire stadium,” said Kirshner, whose company has produced the last seven Super Bowl halftime spectaculars.

I can't decide if I want to go to his concert in April. Sales start Monday.

I know it will be sold out since he is a Hawaii boy and generally they will support him, not to mention the Filipino support he will get from the Filipino community here, they love music and especially from Filipino performers. Then you also have the young kids/teens who will want to go. So it will be such a mixed crowd, and will be sold out as soon as the tickets go on sale. Not to mention, I won't have a ride and nobody wants to go with me.

If I had a car, I'd go alone. I'm used to going to concerts with or without someone, just need transportation.

Pepsi, Microsft, LG among advertisers chasing Bruno Mars

Corporate America is craving Bruno Mars — but the 28-year- old Grammy Award winning singer has yet to fall in love with Madison Avenue.

Mars, whose worldwide fame is expected to grow enormously after his Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday, has so far turned a deaf ear on the host of endorsement offers sitting in his lap, sources said.

Microsoft, LG Electronics, Beats and a range of soft drink firms are chasing the Hawaiian-born star, who has 17.6 million Twitter followers, a source told The Post.

If marketers had their way, Mars would look more like a Nascar driver than the cool crooner he is.

Jarrod Moses, a branding expert, told The Post that if Sunday is a fun day for Mars, the singer will be able to jack up his endorsement fee ask to “$2 million to $4 million.”

Mars’ music has been licensed to appear in ads for Hyundai and Pepsi.

Mars was named Billboard artist of the year in 2013 and picked up a Grammy Award last weekend.

The Warner Music Group artist is worth around $17 million, according to reports.

“Mars appeals to Latin Americans, he’s pop, he’s an amazing musician and an amazing persona,” Moses added. “He’s been smart to be conservative.”

Meanwhile Mars’ label, Warner’s Atlantic Records, is gearing up to make the most of his Super Bowl appearance. His latest tour, “Moonshine Jungle,” continues this winter. Mars is also set to be a guest DJ for Apple’s iRadio.

It's Super Bowl eve and the halftime show is less than 24 hours away. I am very excited for this performance! I know Bruno is going to bring the place down when he performs. biggrin

My prediction is this: A lot of people's minds will be changed tomorrow night and Bruno will gain new fans. After his performance, people will look at Bruno in a whole different light than what they did before. His critics will be (or at least should be) silenced and they will have to give him his props. He's already famous, but this will take his fame to a whole new level. Folks who have been sleeping on this guy will wake up and realize that he is a bona fide super star.

An artist in the true sense of the word.

The REAL DEAL.

Bruno Mars being chosen as the headlining Halftime show performer is no mistake. They knew what they were doing when they chose him. He may still be somewhat of a newbie fame-wise, but Bruno has been working and preparing for this his whole life. He's worked hard and paid his dues in show business, and NOTHING was freely handed to him. He deserves this opportunity and every bit of success, fame and accolades he gets. He's got what it takes to make this halftime show one of the most memorable and most talked about shows in the history of halftime shows. Its his time to really shine and show the world what all he's capable of--and its time for the people who have underestimated, doubted, or straight up hated on him to recognize that he is a truly gifted, very talented, musician/singer/live performer. A legend in the making.

Bruno is gonna slay,

People are gonna learn that day,

That Bruno don't play

And that he's here to stay!

So prepare yourselves to be blown away wink

And to give some of you unfamiliar with Bruno's talent a taste of what you may see tomorrow at haltime, check out this footage of Bruno jamming on the guitar in a recording studio. From 2008!
