That time Bruno Mars played in front of 700 people at Bottom Lounge

There will likely be over one hundred million viewers watching Sunday when pop star Bruno Mars follows in the footsteps of Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, U2 and Madonna and headlines the Super Bowl halftime show. The Super Bowl is expected to be the highest-rated broadcast of the year in the U.S.

And to think, it was only three and a half years ago the “Locked Out of Heaven” singer performed at Bottom Lounge in the West Town neighborhood, which has a capacity of 700.

The soldout show took place in Nov. 2010 -- a month after his debut full-length album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” was released. There is no gap between the stage and the audience at Bottom Lounge, so Mars was able to interact with the crowd on a more personal level. As you can see in the video above, he playfully grabbed audience members’ cameras and filmed himself during the intimate show.

Obviously, a lot has changed since then.

Mars, 28, has won two Grammys and been nominated for 18 of them. In 2012, he was the host and musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” (I don’t think I’ve seen a better music performance on “SNL” than when he sang “Locked Out of Heaven” with his band dancing behind him). Mars has outgrown Chicago’s smaller venues. His Moonshine Jungle tour hit the United Center, which has a capacity of 23,500 for concerts, last July and he’ll perform June 20 at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park (capacity: 28,000).

As for Bottom Lounge, the next artist scheduled to take the stage at the venue is Paradise Fears. You can watch the South Dakota pop-rock band perform there Wedneday. Or you can just catch Paradise Fears when it headlines the Super Bowl in a few years.

Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Show Sending Him Back to Top 10 on Billboard 200

By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 03, 2014 3:17 PM EST

Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Show Sending Him Back to Top 10 on Billboard 200

Bruno Mars is set to return to the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart, thanks to his Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday, Feb. 2.

According to estimates from industry sources, the entertainer's latest album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," sold perhaps 40,000 copies in the week ending Feb. 2. That would represent a 164% gain compared to the previous week, when it sold 15,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The album's official sales figures, as tabulated by SoundScan, will be released on Wednesday, Feb. 5 (the same day as when the new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be unveiled).

If "Unorthodox" returns to the top 10 with 40,000, it will mark the album's first visit to the top 10 since the Billboard 200 chart dated Sept. 14, 2013, and its best sales week since March of 2013.

"Unorthodox Jukebox" was already aiming to sell around 19,000 in the week ending Feb. 2, thanks in part to Mars' exposure at last week's Grammy Awards (Jan. 26). Mars was presented the award for best pop vocal album on the Grammys, but did not perform on the show. (He got additional screen time from his nominations in other categories -- like record of the year and song of the year -- though he didn't win those races.)

According to Fox, who cite Nielsen data, Mars' halftime show attracted the largest aud...Super Bowl, with 115.3 million viewers. That figure surpasses the prior record of 114 million set by Madonna two years ago. The big game drew 111.5 million TV viewers, down from the 109 million that tuned in a year ago (February 3, 2013).

Last year, Beyonce headlined the Super Bowl halftime show (110.8 million), where she was briefly joined by her Destiny's Child group members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Unlike Mars, Beyonce didn't have a current album riding high on the charts at the time.

In the week ending February 3, 2013, Beyonce saw her most recent album, 2011's "4," re-enter the Billboard 200 at No. 100 with 4,000 sold (up 123%). The following week -- after a full week of sales impact was felt from the game -- the album climbed to No. 79 with 6,000 (up 59%).

The impact of the Super Bowl on Mars' music sales -- and on the Billboard charts -- will be unique compared to all other halftime headliners in the modern era of Super Bowl halftime entertainment.

Since 1993, when Michael Jackson headlined the halftime festivities, the main performer on the show has generally been an act with a fairly deep catalog of albums and songs. Mars, however, has only released two albums -- "Unorthodox Jukebox" (released in 2012) and "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" (2010).

Thus, all of the sales and chart impact felt by Mars will be concentrated on just those two albums (and their respective singles). Unlike previous years, where everyone from Beyonce and Madonna to Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen saw their post-Super Bowl chart impact spread across multiple albums and songs.

3rd show SOLD OUT. They may add another 4th show but there is no confirmation of it yet. Looking at the schedule it would be possible for him to do another show since his next stop isn't until the middle of May. I'm pretty sure that it will be sold out just as soon as it goes on sale again since the venue only holds about 8,000 or so. I don't think my chances of gettting a ticket is gonna happen. sigh

Now I really want to go.

Amidst high demand, third Bruno Mars concert sells out too

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Bruno Mars concert tickets were gone in record setting time. Fresh off a huge Super Bowl performance local boy Bruno Mars sells out three Hawaii concerts. So will there be a fourth one added? It's too soon to tell but there is hope.

"Ugh, I'm disappointed!" exclaimed Wendy-Ashley Lim, of Makiki who came down to the Blaisdell box office for a chance at tickets.

Hundreds with high hopes fell flat. Not even those who camped out got tickets because numbers were passed out on a lottery type system, not first come first served.

"I'm just disgusted. They give us tickets and we're here all night and then we still don't get tickets. The mainland bought them all. Everybody on the computers bought them all," said Jury, of Honolulu who said he camped at the box office all night.

"I was online for an hour and I couldn't get in on three computers," said Brent Kuniyoshi, who failed to get tickets online and came to the box office but that didn't work either.

Roosevelt High alum Bruno Mars sold out three concerts in less than two and a half hours. The Blaisdell holds about 8,000 people. So why not have the concert at Aloha Stadium that can seat upwards of 36,000 in concert settings?

"We sent figures off. We looked at both venues and I think, you know Bruno has performed in the arena as a little kid with the Love Notes and I think Bruno wanted to come back where he did his first shows," said Tom Moffatt, A Tom Moffatt Production and long time promoter.

Nostalgia aside there's logistics as well. The tour production is geared toward indoor arenas which is another reason the Bruno Mars people opted against the outdoor Aloha Stadium.

"I wish at this point we could have gone outdoors but I think Bruno wanted to play in the arena where he grew up," said Moffatt.

Then there were the complaints seats weren't blocked off for locals only. Fewer than 100 people who showed up in person got tickets. The rest were sold online.

"They should have accommodated at least the people they gave the tokens to. We stood in line. We were patient and no more tickets," said Gary Martinez, of Mililani who didn't get tickets.

"I'm hoping it was just luck that some people got it rather than some people had connections," said Robert Lipman, of Kuliouou.

"Kept clicking, clicking, clicking and got some nice seats on the bottom at face value," said Louie Ferreira of Waikiki who was able to get tickets online, but only when he put in single seat orders.

"All I know is Ticketmaster has the contract with the Blaisdell. So we have to book tickets through Ticketmaster," said Moffatt.

So will there be a fourth show? There is a chance, but no timeline on an announcement.

"I can't talk about it now. Right now we have three shows, they're gone and hopefully there will be a fourth show, but there is nothing on the table right now," said Moffatt.

Now tickets online are being resold online at sites like StubHub. Pairs of tickets are going for $230 and front row seats are more than $3,000.

It's because of these legitimized scalpers ticket resellers--there are hardly any more tickets left because they bought a ton of tickets from Ticketmaster so they could resell them at a highway robbery price. You can still buy tickets to Bruno's shows--even in Hawaii, but you will probably have to go through one of the legitimized scalpers ticket resellers and pay a much higher price or settle for the leftover cheaper, nosebleed seats from Ticketmaster.

Everyone And Their Mother Watched Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Performance

The Unorthodox Jukebox singer beat Madonna and Beyonce for the most-watched performance in the game's history.

He may not have shut down the lights at MetLife Stadium or flipped off this great nation, but Bruno Mars' Super Bowl halftime performance was the most-watched one in history.

We're not sure if it was that opening drum tirade, his mid-performance split or a (predictably) shirtless cameo from the Red Hot Chili Peppers that had 115.3 million glued to their televisions, but it was enough to outshine performances both Beyonce (110.8 million viewers in 2013) and Madonna (114 million viewers in 2012).

Not surprisingly, Mars' halftime show — which featured amped-up takes on "Locked Out Of Heaven," "Treasure" and "Runaway Baby" — was the most popular portion of Sunday's game. Perhaps a bit more surprising was the fact that the showdown between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos — or the three-hour-long wait for Denver to do anything whatsoever — was the most-watched television show in U.S. History. (111.5 million people tuned in on Sunday, narrowly topping 2012's 111.3 million.)

Not even a day after his blow-out performance, Mars' Unorthodox Jukeboxwas also back at #1 on iTunes on Monday morning (February 3). His debut, Doowops and Hooligans, which dropped back in 2010 and houses such hits as "Grenade" and "Marry You" — was back at #3 on the overall album list.

Just last month, Mars beat out the likes of Robin Thicke, Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Justin Timberlake to take home the award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 56th annual Grammy Awards. Next up, the "Just The Way You Are" will embark on his international Moonshine Jungle Tour.

Super Bowl attracted over 700,000 Shazams

Last weekend's Super Bowl attracted over 700,000 Shazam tags, leading to millions of interactions.

More than half of those 700,000 Shazams happened during Bruno Mars’ half-time show with the biggest spike in activity coming when he was joined by Red Hot Chili Peppers to sing Give It Away.

Shazam CEO Rich Riley said: "Our timeline experience offered users the ability to replay the ads, catch all the new music as it was unveiled, and get exclusive content."

This year, all the Super Bowl ads were Shazamble and interactive content initiatives included 500,000 tracks of the new AfroJack single given away by Bud Light in a world exclusive, a playlist of the half time show starring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, exclusive world premiere track downloads, and playlists from the teams’ cities.

The Top 5 most-Shazamed moments of the Super Bowl were:

· Bruno Mars/ Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give it Away
· Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are
· Chevrolet – Life
· Jaguar - Rendezvous
· Bruno Mars - Runaway Baby

The recently-introduced Auto-Shazam feature accounted for 15% of the totals Shazams during the Super Bowl.

Bruno Mars: 7 things we love about him

By Lisa Respers France, CNN
updated 12:52 PM EST, Mon February 3, 2014

(CNN) -- Rooting for the Seahawks or rooting for the Broncos in the Super Bowl? Heck, we were rooting for Bruno Mars.

The Grammy-winning artist had a tough act to follow this year with his halftime show, given that last year's star performer was Beyonce. And let's be honest -- no one wants to have to follow Beyonce.

But we have to admit, Mars rocked the house (or rather stadium) and his obvious joy at performing for what was basically almost the entire world was pretty infectious.

For those not familiar with Mars, he's pretty awesome. Here are just a few things to love about the guy:

1) He was a baby Elvis

As a child growing up in Hawaii, Mars performed with his family in a Vegas-style show. Born Peter Gene Hernandez, he was only 4 years old when his family heard him belting out some Motown tunes and added him to the act, which included his father, Pete, a percussionist, and his mother, Bernadette, a singer who passed away in 2013.

According to Mars, when he was a baby his dad wanted to call him Elvis, so at age 6 the tiny singer became one of the youngest Elvis impersonators in the world. Baby Bruno said he loved everything about his idol, including "his lip." Too cute.

2) He's a return to the singer-songwriter

Mars doesn't just belt out the tunes, Mars also writes them. While struggling to be discovered as a singer, he got his start in the industry writing and producing hit songs for other artists, including Travie McCoy's "Billionaire," Flo Rida's hit "Right Round," and K'Naan's "Wavin' Flag," which became the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

3) He's really good at impressions

His turn on "Saturday Night Live" may not have gotten as much attention as, say, Justin Timberlake's, but there was no denying Mars was out of this world when he portrayed an intern at Pandora who has to imitate several artists -- including Green Day, Michael Jackson, Steven Tyler and Justin Bieber -- when the power goes out.

Not only was it hilarious, but his version of Bieber's "Boyfriend" was quite possibly better than the original.

4) He represents for the vertically challenged guys

He's a whole lot of talent packed into a little frame. Mars is reportedly 5-foot-5.

5) He can always find the bright spot -- even when being arrested

How can we forget that famous mug shot with him grinning when he was arrested for alleged drug possession? Mars later explained the smile by laughingly saying "I have no idea (why he smiled). It was a picture."

6) He really is as cute as a Monchhichi

We hooted when fans started pointing out the cropped-haired resemblance to the Monchhichi doll, made popular in the 1980s. But there is no denying either the similarity or the utter cuteness of both.

View image on Twitter

7) He's a supportive brother

While his star has ascended, there are others in his family who are waiting in the wings to find fame. Four of his sisters have formed a singing group called The Lylas, and last year they launched a reality show on the WE network. While he didn't appear in the first season, his sisters said he offers plenty of advice -- even though when he does, "We pretty much ignore it,...have said.

They may want to start listening.

Apparently there is a delay sending out tickets because Tickemaster wants to make sure everyone buying tickets are legit and not bots .. eek The demand is high.

Yeah I heard that too. Hopefully Ticketmaster will do a real investigation into who all got the tickets and how they got them so fast. I know it wasnt all regular and new fans snatching up those tickets. There needs to be a better system in place for ticket buying so that people who actually want to buy tickets for themselves can get first pick of those tickets and instead of being screwed over by the scalpers and ticket resellers.

Bruno Mars scores big with Super Bowl

By Lisa Respers France, CNN
updated 12:19 PM EST, Tue February 4, 2014

(CNN) -- Perhaps Bruno Mars really did win the Super Bowl.

According to Billboard, the Grammy-winning singer is set to return to the charts after his halftime performance on Sunday. It reports that sales of his latest album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," rose by 164% after Mars took to the Super Bowl stage with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The album was released in December 2012.

Such an increase in sales is not rare or unexpected. Last year's halftime performer, Beyonce, reportedly saw a bump in sales of her "4" album by 123%.

And Mars is not an unknown quantity, though some of Sunday's viewers may have just discovered him. In 2010, he won a Grammy for best male pop vocal performance for his song "Just the Way You Are." In January, "Unorthodox Jukebox" won Mars his second Grammy, this time for best pop vocal album.

The album may re-enter the top 10 when sales figures are released by Soundscan on Wednesday. This year's Super Bowl drew a record-breaking 111.5 million viewers.

As is customary, Mars did not receive an appearance fee for his Super Bowl performance. Artists do it for the exposure, and that has clearly paid off for Mars.

Zack O'Malley Greenburg f...bes writes that the singer may see the most return in increased ticket prices and sales for his Moonshine Jungle tour.

"In 2013, the singer grossed $72.4 million on 84 shows; his average ticket price sits at about $66," O'Malley Greenburg writes. "With the added exposure from the Super Bowl, he could easily push prices closer to the $120 average of his halftime show predecessor, Beyonce."

Atlantic Records Press Release:

Bruno Mars Smashes the Stage at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show; Tickets for "Moonshine Jungle World Tour" Go on Sale Tomorrow, February 3rd; Mars' Grammy Award-Winning Album "UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX" Officially Certified Double Platinum

Marketwired

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Feb 2, 2014) - Bruno Mars made history tonight as he took the stage at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show as the youngest artist ever to serve as the sole NFL Super Bowl Halftime headliner.

The multi-platinum, multi- GRAMMY®-winning singer/songwriter/producer/musician opened the show with a rousing drum solo on a kit designed to honor his late mother, Bernadette Hernandez. The artwork was modeled after Bruno's arm tattoo dedicated to his mom.

Mars and his eight-piece band, The Hooligans, were dressed from head-to-toe in clothes created custom Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane.

Mars acted as musical director behind this epic performance, which included upbeat, energetic deliveries of multiple hits from his catalogue including "Locked Out Of Heaven," "Treasure" and "Runaway Baby."

The Red Hot Chili Peppers then took the stage to perform their unforgettable song "Give It Away," as Bruno's special guests. Mars invited the Red Hot Chili Peppers to join him on the Pepsi Super Bowl Half Time stage in August 2013, prior to being announced as the halftime performer. Mars said the Red Hot Chili Peppers were the first name he thought of to join him because they are a "soulful" band who is "passionate about creating music and performing."

The historical halftime spectacular also included a special video package honoring men and women of the United States Armed Forces, capturing personalized messages for their loved ones.

Mars ended the performance with a powerful solo rendition of his GRAMMY® Award-winning No. 1 single "Just The Way You Are," standing midfield, backed by the biggest firework display in NFL Super Bowl history.

Tomorrow, February 3rd at 10am local time, tickets for Mars' eagerly anticipated additional leg of his blockbuster "Moonshine Jungle World Tour" will go on sale at brunomars.com/moonshinejungletour. The acclaimed trek will hit arenas and amphitheaters across North America throughout summer 2014, with dates getting underway May 27th at Fresno's Save Mart Center (see attached itinerary). The global superstar will be joined by special guest Pharrell Williams in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. In addition, Aloe Blacc will join the bill as supporting act on multiple dates.

Last Sunday night at the 56th Annual GRAMMY® Awards, Mars added a second statue to his collection, taking home the award for "Best Pop Vocal Album" for his blockbuster second album, "UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX." What's more, the acclaimed album has been officially certified Double-Platinum in the United States by the R.I.A.A. for sales in excess of 2 million.

Billboard's 2013 Artist of the Year, Bruno Mars is a critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer and musician. With 130 million singles sold worldwide, the 18-time GRAMMY® Award nominee and winner has made music history more than once, including such milestones as scoring his first five Billboard "Hot 100" chart-toppers faster than any male solo artist since Elvis Presley. In addition to his two acclaimed multi-platinum albums -- 2010's "DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS" and 2012's "UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX," of which share a combined certification total of 74x platinum worldwide -- Mars has logged an extraordinary catalogue spanning 22 "Hot 100" hits, marking his numerous gifts as singer, songwriter, musician, and producer.
