Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Shuffle Up the Charts: Album Sales Up 82%

By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 12, 2014 1:00 PM EST

Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Shuffle Up the Charts: Album Sales Up 82%

Both of Bruno Mars' albums are in the top 11 of the Billboard 200 chart this week, in the wake of his Super Bowl halftime performance on February 2.

"Unorthodox Jukebox" climbs 7-3 with 81,000 (up 92% in the week ending February 9), while his first album, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" just misses re-entering the top 10, as it glides 19-11 with 26,000 (up 58%).

Mars' combined album sales for the latest tracking week totaled 107,000 -- up 82% compared to last week's sum (59,000).

The last time a Super Bowl halftime performer was in the top 10 the week after the big game was in 2009. That year, Bruce Springsteen's brand new "Working On a Dream" fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in the week after the game -- the album's second week on the chart. The album was released the Tuesday before the Super Bowl, and debuted at No. 1 with 224,000. It then sold 102,000 in the week after the game.

Rather excitingly, this is the first post-game week where a halftime performer has been in the top 10 -- with an older album -- since 2003. The week after the game that year, Shania Twain's "Up!" jumped back into the top 10, rising 12-8 with 67,000 (up 41%). (Twain co-headlined the show that year with No Doubt.)

In terms of digital song sales, Mars has 10 titles among the top 200 sellers this week -- with four of them in the top 40.

His biggest seller for the week was "Locked Out Of Heaven," which rises 51-23 on the Digital Songs chart with 70,000 sold (up 32%).

In total, Mars' catalog of digital songs sold 389,000 for the week -- up 32% compared to last week's sum (295,000). biggrin

Bruno Mars' chart and sales performance after the Super Bowl stands in stark contrast to that of Beyonce, who headlined last year's big game (briefly joined by Destiny's Child).

In the first full week after last year's game (week ending Feb. 10, 2013), the combined album sales of Beyonce and Destiny's Child were 28,000 (with a growth of 40%). The biggest selling album for either act that week was Beyonce's "4," with 6,000 (up 59%).

In terms of song sales, Beyonce and Destiny's Child sold 280,000 downloads in the week after the game -- up 68% compared to 167,000 the week previous.

Could "The Bruno Mars Act" Change The Way Tickets Are Bought For High Demand Concerts?

When Bruno Mars finished his Super Bowl half-time show, America had found a new king of pop. No state was more excited about his ascendency to the throne than his native Hawaii. To celebrate, fans lined up on Monday after the Super Bowl to get Bruno Mars tickets for his upcoming Moonshine Jungle tour stop at the 8,800-person Blaisdell Arena. Not surprisingly, the show sold out in two hours. Unfortunately for the throngs of proud local fans, only 6% of tickets were bought at the box office. As a result, a lot of fans left disappointed and without tickets and now one Hawaii politician is taking action.

In the two hours it took for Bruno Mars to sell out his show, 42% of sales came from people from the Mainland or in Canada. Of course, that 42% has no intention of actually going to the concert and are only interested in selling the hot tickets for a quick profit. In order to limit that kind of profiteering, Hawaii Senate President Donna Mercado Kim introduced Senate Resolution 12 yesterday, also known as the “Bruno Mars Act”. The “Bruno Mars Act” would limit all ticket purchases within 48 hours of the on-sale to the physical box office. It would ensure that anyone who comes all the way to the box office to buy tickets for their favorite should would almost certainly be guaranteed to leave with a ticket in hand.

The average face price for Bruno Mars tickets to his show in Hawaii is just under $100, and the current average price on the secondary market is $446, which make it the 6th most expensive show in his tour. 42% of the Blaidsdell Arena equates to 3,696 tickets. With a difference of approximately $350 between the face price and the current average price on the secondary market, $1.2 million in profit will made by people reselling Bruno Mars tickets for that show alone. Most of the buyers will be native Hawaiians who want to see the show, but couldn’t get out of work to wait in line.

In the Bruno Mars act does pass, it could be an interesting test in one way to curb profits in the ticket resale market. In a state like Hawaii that is physically disconnected from the rest of the country, it could actually be an effective way to ensure that people who wanted to see the show had ample time to get the venue to buy tickets. With 350,000 residents in Honolulu, there are a lot less people that could come out to buy tickets, and most of them would genuinely be interested in actually seeing the show. At that size, Honolulu ranks as the 54th biggest city in the country, just ahead of Anaheim.

Given it’s nature as an island city, it’s also hard for residents of other cities to get there to buy tickets. For the rest of the country, however, that’s not the case. With millions of dollars on the line, entrepreneurs would happily travel a few hours for the chance to get a piece of $1 million in profit. A mainland version of The Bruno Mars Act would likely just mean immeasurably long lines and a system that brokers would manipulate in more manual ways. The good news for ticket fans is that most concerts don’t actually sell out. As an example, even after all of her tasteless self-promotion, Miley Cyrus tickets are available directly from the box office for over half of her shows. Jason Aldean tickets for his “Burn It Down” tour are also still available directly from the box office for all but one of his shows. All to say, even if “The Bruno Mars Act” does become law, it’s not something that would ever make sense on the mainland.

While Bruno Mars doesn’t play Blaisdell until April, he’s still one of the hottest tickets for this week when he plays the first of several shows at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. At a $1,000 average ticket price, that show is actually the 3rd most expensive ticket in music or sports this month behind the Super Bowl and the NBA All Star Game and ahead of events like theDaytona 500. At 3,200 seats, The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan is one of the smallest venues that Mars will be playing over the next year, and a chance for fans to get up close and personal with the hottest act in music.

Calm down you lot, Bruno is talented but he is not the greatest talent in human history. I know Prince has been disapointing but guys like Rahsaan Patterson have more talent than Bruno.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Well, I had to say this.

Bruno Mars doesn't make the best music in our generation, he's for sure talented, but his two albums from my critical point of view lack a lot of good meterial to have me or other listeners calling them acutal good albums.

You know why I'm sticking too much with this guy? It's because I have faith in his talent and I know he's going to give actual GOOD music (In his way of course) in the future. Why I'm saying this? It's because I've seen him talking about it forever, he's been always studying the right people musically and a dude with such an experience in all parts (Producing, writing, playing instruments and listenting to different genres from reggae, pop to funk and 50s/60s doo-wop) cannot be wasted among the current filthy and trashy status of pop music.

I stan for Bruno because he's imo the only mainstream artist who deserves your little bit of attention, he's now among the most famous 5 artists in the globe, it's really hard to get there, and let's just say some people love to follow a generation sensation who deserve it, we all once had our favorite super star. Apart from the real music I listen to, It is something that makes some of us be attractive to mainstream artists, that's why we always bitch about Kanye, Drake and all, a music without its mainstream figures would seem so boring and meaningless, good music is just there waiting for you, but then there's the other part of music you just like and want its maker to get better!

Wait, I never said all this to convince you to like Bruno or his music or anything he has, I just said that cos you can't blame me or Kitty or anyone for staning for somebody who is a treasure among mainstream acts.

Beautifully said Shawy! clapping clapping clapping Couldnt have said it any better, and I totally agree with everything you said! Yes we stan for Bruno because we can see the enormous potential he has to become great! He's not there yet, and we can admit that, but he's well on his way. He WILL become great in time and far surpass Beyonce, Kanye, Justin Timberlake, etc and whoever else is considered to be "legendary material" in our generation today. The difference between Bruno and those other artists I just mentioned is they have been overhyped as "legendary material" but Bruno actually IS legendary material. He is the real deal! He's not a bunch of hype or a marketing, gimmick. He's a true artist in the real sense of the word but people need to realize he is still GROWING as an artist, musician, songwriter and a person as well. I'm confident that his next album will be even better than his first two! This guy will be soaring high in the next few years. He's got the natural talents and gifts, in time he will grow and keep getting better and more brilliant with time. nod

BRIT Awards: Bruno Mars Celebrates Win With 'Treasure' Performance (Video)

After headlining the Super Bowl halftime show in a sleek gold blazer and slicked-back hair, the singer kept it casual when singing his latest hit.

Just after winning the award for international male solo artist, Bruno Mars celebrated by taking London's O2 Arena stage to sing "Treasure" at the BRIT Awards on Wednesday.

Rather than wearing anything similar to his Super Bowl halftime look -- a sleek gold YSL blazer and his signature hairsprayed hairdo -- Mars and his Hooligans band went casual to perform their latest hit. Mars wore a black leather jacket, cap and lace-ups, but added a few well-harmonized vocal interludes to the song bridge, while reprising the song's vintage-style choreography.

Beyonce, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Lorde and Disclosure, Ellie Goulding, Bastille, Arctic Monkeys and Rudimental were also confirmed to perform at the O2 Arena stage.

Watch a clip of Mars' performance at the BRIT Awards above.

Bruno Mars Wins Best International Solo Male Artist At 2014 Brit Awards

Bruno Mars has been crowned the best international solo male artist of the year at the 2014 Brit music awards.

The achievement is no small feat as he had to battle such household names as Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Drake, and John Grant to pull the upset.

For those who follow this versatile artist, the selection comes as no surprise following Bruno Mars’ appearance as the main act in the Super Bowl Halftime Show on February 2.

His performance drew attention to the raw talent the singer-songwriter displays on stage during his live performances, which is contagious and leaves the audience wanting more, more, more and was received with critical acclaim.

This is the second time the American artist has captured this award, Bruno Mars previously won in 2012 and this begins a great year for the singer, who topped the US charts with “When I Was Your Man” (it reached number two in the UK).

Bruno Mars was also selected to perform during this year’s Brit awards along with Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Beyonce, and Arctic Monkeys.

It’s hard to believe Peter Gene Hernandez, Bruno’s real name, only has two studio albums. In 2010 he released Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which reached number three on the Billboard 200 with worldwide number-one singles “Just the Way You Are” and “Grenade”, as well as by the single “The Lazy Song”.

The album received seven Grammy nominations, winning Best Pop Vocal Performance for “Just The Way You Are”.

His second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox was released in 2012 and peaked at number one in the United States with international singles “Locked Out of Heaven”, “When I Was Your Man”, “Treasure”, and “Gorilla.”

Bruno Mars has sold 10 million albums in three-years and 58 million singles worldwide. He has a combined downloaded earnigns as a singer, songwriter, and producer of over $115 million. In 2014, he was ranked number one on the Forbes 30 list.
