I think what irritates people most about Justin is he is a wanna be, punk and he tries to hard. His very contrived.

Again, that's your opinion. Not sure where it comes from, either. He's been doing this in public since he was a child. That's not contrived or wanna be - that's who he is.

Frank was awful on SNL and on the Grammys he needs to learn how to sell it. He doesn't project energy, he sucks it in. He should look to Reba or Streisand for inspiration, those ladies can stand still and command a stage.

As for Justin Timberlake or as B introduced him as the man "born to make music,"HAHAHA. Next thing you know his PR team is going to call him the king of pop!

I was bored with the songs from JT, but a great performance though.

In my house, when Beyonce said this man was "born to make music" I started screaming "Oh my god, Prince is coming out!"

I was so pissed.

This is the hype that I'm talking about. They acted like he was some demigod. "He's backkkk.."

Shyt. I don't care.

My guess is he needs that extra prep and molding, (something labels/managers use to do back in the day but dont anymore). You gotta remember Frank blew up through social media and word of mouth.

Alicia keys (at least 14)has more grammys than Prince ( 7 for Prince) David Bowie (Not counting lifetime achievement awards) along with Queen have no Grammys.

No offense to Alicia but you sure aint no Prince, Bowie, or Queen. That's a telling of the times. Even looking at the albums nominated for best album, none of them would stand a chance against any of the 3 mentioned at their peaks.

You got that right!! This is another one who I think is over sensationalized by the media. Is it simply because she plays the piano and stays fully clothed for the most part? Is that all it takes to be consisdered a "talented artist"? I used to be a fan of hers. Her first two albums were great and soulful. I think she has sold out and watered herself down to cater to the masses. Now she's doing duets with Maroon 5? Really? What a joke! Who the fuck listens to Maroon 5 and why??

I think Justin Timberlake can be enjoyed more by some of us if we remove the nagging subtext from the equation.

What subtext?

That he gets way too much praise for being the savior of R&B.

That he believes his own hype.

That he'll do anything to remain uber-popular.

And the most glaring; If he were black no one would care.

Where is any of that coming from? Who has said it? What facts do you have to back it up? Because nobody I know feels that way. In short, that's YOUR baggage. That's what you put on him. And how the hell is not making an album for six years doing "anything to remain uber-popular"? lol

Shard said:

-Justin Timberlake was as I always say, mediocre. He wasn't terrible but certainly not great and damn I am SICK of the hype about him! The way they had Beyonce introduce him as if he were an all-time great or something falloff Also, is Timberlake purposely trying to get Robin Thicke comparisons? His new hair style and dressing up is what Thicke does...not to mention borrowing from Prince and Sinatra.

What hype? The last few weeks since his album was announced? lol Again, dude has been gone from music for at least four years. He's also been making and releasing music longer than Robin Thicke. And in case you (and others) missed it, people in the music business actually, ya know, LIKE him.

Also, here's a picture of Robin Thicke from the time of his first album before some urban contemporary, R&B stylist associated with Interscope Records and Pharrell Williams got ahold of him and cleaned him up so they could move some units.

You're welcome.

People gonna hate. But hate intelligently, please. lol

You could be right, but my intention was to try and analyze why there might be hesitation to accept him. I know there was major fallout (not commercially for him) over the Janet jackson thing. And from observation (again i don't personally know Justin) he does SEEM to believe his own hype. Other points I was trying to look at from more of a sociological subtext and a study of how the media, and we, work together in our acceptance of certain perceptions.

Then again, as you well know, I'm not an expert on Justin. I'll shut up one of these days. lol

No, no! Please don't. I know I sure as hell won't. lol I don't even particularly care about any of this, or Justin Timberlake. But I don't understand the vitriolic reactions, either, and it makes for good conversation.

I've been calling bullshit on the Janet Jackson fallout from day one. How anybody could think that Justin Timberlake would say "Oh yeah, that's cool!" if she approached him beforehand is beyond me. I've always thought his reaction after the fact was perfectly acceptable. What else was he supposed to do? Come out in support of Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"? People make me laugh. lol

I get the media and sociological subtext points, and they're an interesting discussion. But in line with him "believing his own hype", I don't think they're nearly as relevant as they're made out to be. He's been disgustingly succesful at everything he's tried since he was 15 years old. From all accounts he worked damn hard to get there and is still incredibly humble. A) That's not hype, that's confidence in your own abilities. B) Why shouldn't he have it?

This conversation is even more ammusing to me from an audience that grew up, one would assume, with Prince. So my hypocrisy.

Aretha better watch out. Beyonce earned her 16th Grammy last night.hrmph Aretha has 18 (20 if you count the special awards). If Beyonce releases another album before Aretha does, she will probably surpass the Queen of Soul for the most Grammys won by a black female and will probably be dubbed the new Queen of Soul.lol Aretha will be on the war-path if that happens.

..LOL...Kit you are so wrong for that....But I think you'd agree that B-Girl is not known for having Soulful vocals. She's been dubed a Pop Princess in waiting since she went Solo. To garner the title Queen of Pop she'll have to suffer the Wrath of MiMi Cannon...

Don't gorget Alison krauss still reigns as GRAMMYS biggest Giant..She has 28 Grammys...I wonder if she has a Room designed to house all those Grammys? She has to have an awards room @ her Crib...

lol lol

Krauss also has 14 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, 9 Country Music Association Awards, 2 Gospel Music Associate Awards, 2 CMT Music Awards, 2 Acadamy Of Country Music Awards, 1 Canadian Country Music Award, at least, and probably a bunch of other crap, too. Plus 5 Gold Albums, 4 Platinum Albums (three of them multi-platinum), and that's just the US certifications. I would think once you've been that succesful that you probably don't need to look at them all the time. But if she doesn't have an awards room, she's definitely taking up a lot of storage space. lol

It could be. Her commercial success has been more recent and limited to a few specific albums. Three multi-platinum is 6, one platinum would make it 7, five gold would it 9.5 and the rest of her catalog could bring it up to 11. It's possible.

Justin seems cool, earthy. Not sure how much of it is "natural" for him tho. Like if he'd be cool with black ppl in GENERAL, non-celebrities, u know. I'm not impressed with the new stuff so far. Timbaland hooked him up in the past. I think Adam Levin would do better vocally with some of his material, he's more naturally soulful to me.He's definitely a media golden boy, over hyped, but u can't expect him to NOT cash it in and milk it dry.

You might think Frank Ocean bombed at The Grammys, but the record buying public begs to differ.

He's expected to have the biggest gains in album sales post Grammy week with a 100%+ sales gain for his exceptional "Channel orange".

Another artist I knew would benefit from his performance on the show is Miguel, who is expected to have a 50%+ sales gain for his album "Kaliedescope Dream".

The record buying public is not a barometer of quality or good taste.

Sales don't equal quality.

How many times has that very argument been used here at the org? I'm pretty sure you've used it yourself (CynicKill).

That being said, channel ORANGE is a good album, so I'm glad people are checking it out. That doesn't change the fact that his performace was awful. Maybe they're checking it out because he flashed that smile that so many people are talking about. Or because he won a couple awards, one with Jay-Z. Or because they figured out he's that guy who wrote a song about another guy. Or maybe it's because so many people are talking about how bad that performance was (and they are) that they want to see what all the fuss is about, see how different the album sounds.

The strongest arguement that can be made is that Robin Thicke didn't create the look OR the sound.

It's not like Justin was looking at Robin for ideas, but he should've. In the case of that song it was a good move.

As for Frank. I'm just happy more people are checking out the album. My point was that if the performance was THAT awful I think it would've had the opposite affect.

Then again there was the incident with that author that made up stuff in his autobiography on Oprah and after everyone found out his sales spiked. Go figure.

@Timmmy & Company:

The only one on Robin's knob is Justin Timberlake, trying to suck his new life out of it. eek

It's not a matter of Robin's inventing the jazzy, blue-eyed soul style. It's the fact that he's the primary one in the mainstream executing it right now and getting adoration and acceptance from it.

Justin Timberlake's style was not like this in the past. It just seems suspect to find the obscure thing that's working for the other popular blue-eyed soul singer and duplicate that schtick when you've made a name for yourself ... not by being fringe... but by being pop and mixing pop and R&B. Seems inauthentic and gimmicky to me.

I used to love JT. And when he's on SNL, I still do. HIs music is underwhelming to me now, though.
