He said on multiple occasions that he was inspired by JB Fred Astaire, black kids' street dancing, etc. But MJ is a very original dancer in a way that he incorporated many different styles of dance and made them his own, eventually helped popularize and broaden popping. Robot, floating, mime movements, break dancing, tap dancing, I even saw some modern-ballet inspired moves from him sometimes. His freestyles from Human Nature(the ending) or Stranger in Moscow performance are very innovative. I don't think anyone was claiming that MJ originated all his dance moves by himself which is never true for anyone.
