I just think someone deserving of the talent should be getting the award, like Beyonce. I found nothing special about Britney and her "iconic" school girl get up when it was not an original idea, and Mya did it a few months before her in 98' though little white girl Britney was more marketable. This is more about race and lack of talent than anything here, and media hype making her out to be great and special.

I don't know, she lost a lot of confidence. She's definitely not herself anymore.

Beyonce already got a lot of great awards, remember the billboard awards recently? She's getting her fair share.

What made Britney so great was her innocence combined with a sort of sexual energy she had. She doesn't have it anymore, but it's what made her so attractive to people. She had a feral movement and fire behind the eyes. It was exciting. It wasn't the school girl outfit or the slave 4 u video or whatever that made her great, it was much deeper than that. She was an amazingly talented dancer and performer, yet again, ruined by her extreme lack of confidence today. The fact that you would suggest that this is a race thing is appalling.

This is a damn joke. I don't know why but it ever since ole Brit went loco they have been trying to rescue and restore her image ever since. Remember that crappy performance she gave that was supposed to had been her "comeback" when she opened for the awards a few years ago? You know, the one that Kanye was whining about? Now they honoring her, for what exactly? The hooker can't sing and can't dance! I'm glad I won't be wasting my time watching this blasphemy bullshit show.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

What makes you think that about Beyonce? Because to be honest TECHNICALLY Beyonce and Brittany Spears are BOTH the same as far as what they have contributed to the music industry which has been zeroe.. just because one can sing and the other cant doesnt really make a difference. Most of the awards Beyonce has won suggests she has done things for the industry which is objectively not accurate and with this award to Brittany Spears it is suggesting the same. How is Beyonce deserving of a high prestigeous reward the same as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder or Prince? What has she done musically that has been deserving? What innovative things has she implemented in the music industry that has NOT been done? What original things is she doing? What groundbreaking music has she made? Beyonce is just as overrated as Brittany Spears... tired of all of them.

These awards are recognized to be MORE than talent... During his heyday for example, MJ didnt just get all those awards because he was a good singer and dancer BUT for what he DID for the MUSIC INDUSTRY. The things that he created and what was doing were groundbreaking, influential, original... iconic, legendary NONE of what Beyonce OR Brittany Spears has done IS doing is NOTHING like that. Thats why these awards mean NOTHING because a statue isnt going to mean anything or stand the test of time if their is NOTHING TO BACK IT UP WITH. Most of what Brittany and Beyonce is doing is following trends and things artists like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Prince, Madonna created. They are not doing anything "new".

So I dont see why they should be rewarded just because of their popularity and how long they have been in the industry. If that be the case then ALOT more people deserve a millenium award... Please thats just bullshit. They give awards out now... NOTHING is earned

I don't think beyonce deserved that billboard award and I was upset they renamed it after an award MJ got, but she has more talent than britney though she is not an innovator. Just saying if they had to give it to someone today, even if for popularity, at least someone talented is better than a nasally, janet rip-off britney

I despise the fact she made a career out of becoming a white janet jackson and sells more. Everyone is inspired by her and michael, but this girl copied even her moves, outfits in photoshoots, worked with her choreographers, a lot of her video directors, even ripping off names of her songs, I could go on. Plus, she has worked with Wade Robson on her other tours, MJ protege. Sometimes I wanted to like her cause it's a similar style of music with good writers, but her voice is AWFUL and nasally, her dancing is frumpy, there is no originality, etc. I feel bad things are going bad in her personal life, but that doesn't mean she needs a sympathy award, and she is NOT an icon. She has not done a thing for music, ripped off mostly Janet and wanted attention like Madonna. Even in her early days, I saw the Janet similarity and thought she and Madonna had nothing in common besides being white. She was in Toronto this weekend on her tour, and here is what the reviewer had to say about her not being Madonna or Janet. :

Air Canada Centre, Toronto - August 13, 2011

Britney Spears. (WENN.COM file photo)

TORONTO - With a career that has had as many highs as potentially lethal lows, Britney Spears keeps coming up off the mat.

The pop star – and TMZ.com magnet – is currently on her Femme Fatale tour, one which has garnered stronger than expected reviews. And on the opener of a two-night stand at Toronto's Air Canada Centre, Spears was quick and to the point during an 85-minute whirlwind of props, costumes and dance-house beats.

Following a video of an elusive, gun-wielding Spears being placed in a cop car, she emerged on a tall riser for Hold It Against Me, the first of many dance offerings the enthusiastic crowd lapped up. Yet moments later, Spears quickly exited for what would be the first of several costume changes.

“What's up Toronto? How you feeling?” she said before featuring choreography best described as Janet Jackson-like. But there were plenty of stunts, including her rising high above the crowd for the sugar-y and rather lyrically witty Piece of Me.

Despite idiotic video segments which meshed perfectly with the idiotic Big Fat Bass, the sweet, infectious How I Roll fared strongly, resembling something The Ting Tings could cover as she boogied on a small pink convertible.

Spears and her several dancers rocked out somewhat during Lace And Leather, picking a fan named Alex and cuffing him to a pole as she propped her legs on his shoulders. Meanwhile the big, brassy If U Seek Amy had a large number of the near-capacity crowd dancing more than usual.

The first huge prop was a ship appearing for the Egyptian-themed Gimme More. Taking the stairs to where her massive backing band – er, two keyboardists – resided, Spears hit the spot with the polished (Drop Dead) Beautiful which had some sexy, racier moments as did Boys.

Spears posed as a biker chick for a revamped ...Baby One More Time that caused a boisterous sing-along as it melded into S&M. By then, Spears kept her foot on the gas, making the beefy beats dominant over the rare ballad like Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know.

“Alright Toronto, are you guys ready for some more?” she asked before inviting fans up to shake some legs on I Wanna Go. From there the tight, swinging Womanizer shone as she skipped across the stage.

While she still has some distance to go before rivalling Janet or Madonna, Spears can certainly entertain as the high-aerobic pace of Toxic proved. Ending with Till The World Ends, Britney rose to the skies on a platform with angelic wings behind her before coming back down to earth.

Opening for Spears was hip-hop sensation Nicki Minaj who nearly upstaged the headliner with a high-energy set. Although nailing songs like Monster and Where Them Girls At, Minaj had a huge ace up her sleeve when Drake appeared onstage for Moment 4 Life to thunderous applause. Drake, who said “there was no individual he was more prouder of” than Minaj, later returned to see Minaj dance around him before they hugged again.

Exactly. So dumb.

@alphastreet
Britney came about in a teen pop era where everyone was dancing.. To compare them is ridiculous. Their styles are completely different.. not only their image but their choreography and music styles too. To call her the white Janet is just stupid and frankly you're just being bitter.

I already said everyone was dancing or emulating her, I don't have a problem with them, it was happening for years. She was even copying her photoshoots, dance moves, going 'sing' and 'stop' and all that in her music(janet said that too in VIBE), working with Herb Ritts, Francis Lawrence, Joseph Kahn, Tina Landon who Janet worked with, you name it. I liked some teen pop songs, but didn't take it too seriously, I was more into r&b/hip hop at the time and could see what they borrowed but didn't care much except that all those songs sounded the same, and they had their own style instead of being rip offs. I actually liked Britney too, but then her voice started going so bad, her songs sounding the same, getting more attention and sales, people not realizing she was copying and giving her credit cause of being more marketable. If she has good songs today time to time, I will admit it , but her voice became really bad, she sounded great in her teen years from old footage I saw and her first album and on occasion, on songs like Everytime(gee, I wonder what inspired the title), but people don't often admit the influence, instead there are always headlines that Madonna is her idol when I barely see it, even if Britney herself has actually credited Janet in interviews. It upsets me how the media don't acknowledge it more than Britney herself. She showed some musical growth on In The Zone which I bought then to support Madonna, but ended up liking the album though her voice was still nasally except when she used her head and chest voice for a change. And unlike many, I don't put her down for her mental health issues, I actually feel bad for her regarding that.

Right but, like I said before, this is the way it always has been. That's how it all evolves. If you look at MJ, you can see a definite influence by James Brown. So much that one could easily accuse him of stealing his moves and what not. Only difference is, Mj was innovative and brilliant.. Britney wasn't. But she was good. I would definitely say that before her breakdowns, she was definitely an artist and she was creative. Britney isn't trying to steal anything from Janet, she's doing what she knows. She grew up listening to people like Janet and MJ and Madonna, she danced her whole life, she was in the business since 8yrs old. Stop accusing her of bullshit because you think Janet deserves more credit. Janet is amazing, yes absolutely she deserves more credit and attention, but you shouldn't blame it on Britney. Britney didn't steal anything from Janet, and just because Janet isn't getting the attention she should doesn't mean it's her fault. There are many underrated artists out there, unfortunately, &Janet is one of them.

Yeah but even the ones before MJ secured their legacy, though a lot of times Elvis gets the credit they deserve more, and I see the Janet-Britney thing as that all over again...it's the white supremacy/white privlege part of it that's upsetting more than Britney herself. I understand Brit and I are almost the same age and were inspired by the same artists, but there were other artists around her time too with better voices like Robyn and Christina Aguilera that were inspired by her and yet not making a career out of ripping her off to become iconic. She has done some good work and I'll give her credit for that, but she had a hype machine behind her, and it wasn't nice seeing some people not always enjoying something Janet did onstage or in a video, but then Britney would do something very similar and it's seen as great, that was upsetting, and anything but iconic on her or her team's part.

About what you said earlier about her losing confidence, I do agree with that and it's obvious she liked what she did before. I felt bad for her at the Billboard's and wanted her to just go home, and at the MTV awards a few years ago. I don't buy that she was saving herself for her tours, she just doesn't want to do it anymore and maybe she shouldn't, and that happens to many people. I know she is a depression sufferer, as I am too and maybe it has to do with that, who knows...

disbelief Really? With the white supremecy shit? This wasn't like Elvis, it wasn't the same time. It wasn't like where he had to introduce black music to white people. This is the nineties/00s where black people have plenty of opportunities in the music business. If there was a black girl more talented than Britney and had the ability to make it, she would have made it. This has nothing to do with race. This is absolutely NOT the same thing.. Janet was a star WAAAY before Britney and still is. The two are completely unrelated.

Yes, she has a hype machine behind her. Every artist today does. The music industry is all about marketing now, don't you know? It's not just her. The thing is, though, is that before everything that happened to her, Britney could actually live up to the hype. Now, unfortunately, she can't.

Britney and Janet are two completely different people. The the thing is, you are only looking at the surface. You are not seeing the deeper part of it. It's perfectly okay for someone to like Britney and not like Janet, how is that so bad? Like I said, two completely different images, music, styles, etc. Janet is extremely talented, had a lot of energy, her voice is great, etc, etc. But like I mentioned before, the thing that Britney used to have that Janet didn't was the fact that she had this play on innocence with a sexual magnetism going on. There was a fire behind the eyes, she had a feral movement that was very sexual, she had a darkness to her. That's what made her so fascinating to so many people. Unfortunately she lost all that.

These are things you can't see with your eyes but that's what made her ultimately so great and unfortunately Janet never had those things. You have to look past the exterior because this has NOTHING to do with her being white or whatever else you said. You can't measure these things.

Are you fricken serious? It has EVERYTHING to do with race! hell even eminem said that if was black he wouldve only sold HALF the records he sold now.

There are many aisian, hispanic, and Black entertainers that are hella talented but DONT make it in America's Market and It's just straight up sad.

Now what the woman (alphastreet) was saying is that it's a pretty damn shame that A white blonde girl with this "innocence" was able to Copy or ripp off everything Janet Jackson did but Yet no one notices it or points it out, AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT, the girl didnt want to give ANY credit to Janet up until now? But some way shape or form was quick to claim Madonna as her MAIN inspiration? wtf?

And everyone believed it because for some reason it's that damn hard to believe that A white woman was Inspired by A Black woman. It's like the movie "imitation of life", White looking mixed girl tries so hard to shut out her Black mother so she can fit in to white society? SAME thing with Brit and Jan. Britney Tried So damn hard to Convince everyone that Madonna was her Main Inspiration knowing Damn well she copied from Janet. And what happens? Janet is left with No credit......

And what do you mean about Elvis introducing Black music to whites. He STOLE Black music and tried to bring it into white society. So Maybe we shouldnt act like Theres NO favoritism in America's Music Industry.

Elvis and black acts were a different time period from current times of black and white music. Little Richard was one of the first if not the first where black and white audiences were allowed to be in the same stadium during performances, though on different floors, this was a huge deal. He retired in the late 50's briefly cause of religion and Elvis continued where he left off by taking the success of black music to showcase to white audiences, though he also had charm. Elvis gets more credit than other acts many times, and the stealing rumor comes from the rumor about shining shoes, but it is a good comparison cause he did take successful music from black acts to make mainstream and make profits off of, and he gets credit for that before they do in the history books

In 1990, Ice Ice Baby was the first rap single to go to #1 on the Billboard charts, before that, mainstream mostly showed black artists doing rap, but they were not charting high until this happened, though he was seen as a joke. I have a music book (and I know they re-write history) that says after Eminem charted in the US and UK with his albums and singles, it made rap/hip hop culture become a worldwide phenomenon more than just a US or urban one. I believe it's only a half truth, I know tons of non black people, both white and visible minorities who loved rap in the 90's, but rap-rock also became popular, rap became popular in India, Korea and so forth too though it was already happening before he was around. Eminem saying what he did supports this too, he worked with Dre, but being white made him more "accessible" to a broader audience, especially in Europe, and his lyrical content spoke to people and was controversial, which played a major role in his success. He wasn't trying to be another tupac or biggie even though he sold more records though I could be wrong on that.

I agree with what poplover is saying in this case. I don't think what we are discussing are things the general population takes note of when playing music. However, I do remember Britney giving Janet props many times, but her giving Madonna props made headlines in big magazines instead with rumors flying about them doing a duet or wearing t-shirts with one another's names on them.

disbelief Really? With the white supremecy shit? This wasn't like Elvis, it wasn't the same time. It wasn't like where he had to introduce black music to white people. This is the nineties/00s where black people have plenty of opportunities in the music business. If there was a black girl more talented than Britney and had the ability to make it, she would have made it. This has nothing to do with race. This is absolutely NOT the same thing.. Janet was a star WAAAY before Britney and still is. The two are completely unrelated.

I already know the girl paid homage to Janet, one or 2 times lol

What I'm saying is that It took her 10 years to mention once again that Madonna and Janet were both her influences?? She didnt mention Janet again up until 2011 and you know it!

I remember hearing about Britney covering Black Cat and another Janet song when she did it, plus hearing an audio of Material Girl back then and thought she sounded alright. I was probably at my Janet fan peak then and not really being critical of Britney, just thinking she's another dance-pop artist until I could see what was unfolding over the years and seeing through it. I remember tv guide had parents comparing Britney to Madonna and criticizing her for her clothes. I didn't agree with that and saw nothing in common with Madonna then. Britney was a child actress/performer on Disney, Madonna struggled to make it on her own and was almost in her mid 20's.

I remember Britney in her car in 2007 or 08' listening to Damita Jo, and mentioning she wants to be how Janet used to do it when rehearsing choreography for the Circus video. So she damn well knows she is copying Janet.

As for people preferring Britney over Janet, if they don't want to be fans of hers, they don't have to bash her or not give her props either the way many of them do or cringe at her but don't give Britney or Madonna a second look.

Is it really that serious, though? Britney Spears is a no-talent,lip-synching,uninteresting,Auto-tuned wannabee lol She's a robotic puppet, going through the motions to make a buck.If I were a Janet fan,I wouldn't even want Britney's name mentioned in the same sentence!

^ and that is why calling Britney an Icon is an insult, cause that is what Janet and Madonna are, not Britney. The former were not handed those titles, they worked for it and impacted generations of artists in music, and in my most humble opinion, explored feminity in various forms during a period of third wave feminism. I have yet to see Britney do anything of the sort
