Well, it's your opinion, but what baffles me is how anyone can't thoroughly enjoy it. Not only is BTW a refreshing change of pace from the Britneys, Rhiannas, Beyonces and Katys of the world, with their everyday beats and boring, unadventurous lyrics, it is so versatile in its musical scope. Everything from dance, to pop, electronica, flamenco, techno and stadium rock is on that record. It's a pop masterpiece. Even her vocals are not only the strongest they've ever been, but they're also completely diverse. The same woman delivering power vocals on "Americano" is the same woman belting out the sweet, Tiffany-esque "Fashion of His Love", and it's amazing.

Meisme is right in stating that Gaga is tackling racial, sexual, gender, and political barriers on the record--something her contemporaries never do. And her lyrics are much more thought provoking. It's a brilliant album.

Don't you think you're taking it a bit out of context, though? Lady Gaga isn't in competition with Rahsaan or Utada. They're entirely different strati. So, if we take LG in context (which is to compare her to other American disco/dance-pop artists), she is diversifying. Whether you give that much merit or not depends on how you view the pop music landscape and how important it is to you.

Thinking in global terms, it is easy to find alternatives to LG's music. Off the top of my head, Robyn comes directly to mind as does Roisin Murphy. They have been doing "Born This Way" for the past decade. No one said boo about it. Hell, Body Talk is a way better album, when taken as a whole, than Born This Way is! But they aren't really competing for attention from each other. Robyn's audience is nigh he same as LG's (the gay contingent) but they appeal to different aspects.

Anyway, LG mostly appeals to me because everything she does is about 25 degrees to the left of whatever anyone else in the public eye is doing right now. I love that. It reminds me of Prince. Prince's music has always been fairly simple, but the filters through which those simple sounds went changed it and it instantly bonded to people's hearts and minds. LG does the same exact thing. They both speak life into a counter-culture of people brought together perhaps by no other similarities than their appreciation of the music - at the heart of which lies a message of love and acceptance and everything carnal and passionate. In the end, it's pop music, but it would be half-hearted to suggest the impact isn't there. Sometimes, you just gotta look for it in its proper context.

Man I have Roisin, Robyn, Utada, but no Rahsaan. I have never heard of this artist. Maybe I should check them out. Anyway to me the delivery GaGa has is so much stronger. I like Robyn but her delivery does not seem as passionate to me. Also her more heavy dance tracks seem weak compared to whats on Born This Way. I think seeing GaGa live in April is what hooked me. I have never ever seen any artist in any category of music from underground punk to mainstream pop do a show like that. Not even Prince. She not only did great musically but I left that show feeling inspired and uplifted. She has said herself when people see her live that pulls it all together and until then it is really incomplete. To Spinlight you are beautiful and I love reading the post you do.

Gaga gets even more points for this because I've always loved Kermit D. Frog.

The Fame Monster and Born this way have Madonna's signature all throughout them.

That being said, Both Gaga's albums are better than both of Madonna's first two albums, and Gaga's voice is far stronger.

What we have is a singer-song writer courting the media, where with Madonna we had an entertainer that for the most part could sing a bit courting the media.

Don't get me wrong, I like Madonna, and find the fact that she can put out nothing but crap for the last 10 years and still sell over a million copies an album a phenomenal feat. Moreover, Like A Prayer and Ray of Light are stellar productions.

But it's looking to me like Gaga's of a slightly higher caliber already.

Either way, I'm really going to be interested in seeing what the next few years bring her.

I'm not being cheeky--I just can't tell.

About a year and half ago, I heard some of her songs and thought they were really catchy, but thought of her no differently than many of the dancefloor divas--I also didn't realize how big she had become in the states.

But after seeing her perform live on television a couple of times, and hearing her proclaim on T.V. that she would never lip sing a single song live (she does have her voice on backup tracks played to tape though), I was impressed.

She's a stellar talent.

I'm so glad I finally like a popstar again.

I think she definetely makes good pop music but she has not released anything as iconic as say holiday, material girl, papa don't preach etc

Lady Gaga has tirelessly promoted her latest album, "Born This Way," with everything from a

controversial appearance on Letterman (she didn't like his questions, so she ate his notes) to a face-to-face interview with Costco magazine. Her hard work and considerable talent have paid off -- "Born This Way" is set to be the biggest first-week album debut since 2001, when *NSYNC's "Celebrity" sold 1.88 million copies in their first week.

Billboard.biz projects that Gaga's album will sell approximately 1.15 million copies, and some suggest that the sales might signal an upward turn for the music industry.

Some, however, claim that Gaga's place in the charts is skewed by an Amazon promotion, which made "Born This Way" available for just 99 cents on two days. Billboard estimates that 400,000 digital copies of the album were purchased through the 99-cent offer. Elsewhere, Best Buy made the album available as a giveaway with the purchase of a Smartphone. The giveaway albums won't be counted in the final Billboard tally.

Some people aren't too happy about that. Reuters reports, "brick-and-mortar retailers who try to operate on tight profit margins for music are up in arms about the promotions, with some arguing that both Amazon's 99-cent sales and the Best Buy giveaway counts should be excluded from the numbers that are tallied for the Billboard 200."

Bill Werde, editorial director of Billboard, has come under scrutiny -- mostly, he says, by Britney Spears fans on Twitter, who aren't happy about the way Gaga's sales may dwarf the sales of Brit's "Femme Fatale." It's these people he had in mind when he explained his chart policy, writing, "Britney fans, I'm looking at you, or at least at the evil ones who keep cursing me on Twitter without asking questions."

Ruh-roh.

"I don't believe in changing or adding a rule in order to affect that week's charts," Werde says firmly. Some Spears fans cite her 2003 "Blackout" album, which was her first album that didn't debut at #1, as a result of Billboard policies which changed midway through its first week on shelves. It put The Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden" at #1 and "Blackout" at #2.

"The powers-that-be (of which I was not one at the time) decided to make a policy switch because they felt the best decision was to allow for the most accurate chart," Werde writes. "I'm not going to go back and second-guess that, but I will repeat: I don't believe in making a policy change that will affect the same week's charts."

Werde reiterates that no policy will be changed based on Gaga's and Amazon's promotions. "We have never had a policy as it relates to pricing threshold of an album apart from a promotion. Therefore, I am predisposed against making a rule change to affect this week, even if I thought that ultimately we should have a pricing threshold. That said, I'm pretty far from certain it makes sense to consider pricing in such a way (although I encourage your comments below -- I will read them all closely and respond to new ideas). For starters, market dynamics are shifting so quickly. Who's to say that in three years or three months or even three weeks that the accepted value of an album won't be .99 cents?"

Lady Gaga is, creatively, stylistically and musically, on a completely different plane than Ms. Spears and anyone else in that peer group. She's the total package. Style AND substance. What other young female dance-pop artist these days has crafted such a diverse and brilliant album as BTW? None. I'm a fan of them all--Rihanna, Britney, X-tina, Fergie, Katy, Bey, you name it, but Lady Gaga is the real deal. Her performances are dynamic. Her singing voice is strong and versatile. Her style is so left of center that it polarizes people. Her videos are events. Her interviews are a marvel to watch, whether she's just sitting there reflecting on her early days in the NYC underground scene and occasionally spitting out F-bombs, or speaking about playing Chopin on the piano. Yeah, the rest of 'em are basically little girls when compared to Lady G.

Britney and Gaga are alike as far as them both being pop girls and Gaga is now what Britney USED to be just keeping it real. But they two different artists, the little monsters and Britney fans just ruin it for everybody Gaga and Britney actually like each other.
