The show I actually liked was last year BBC Three doing 'Move Like Michael Jackson'. The premise sounded tacky, but I thought the acts in the live finals had a lot more musicality than the average dance crews who just try to make random shapes in unison as quickly as possible just to impress.

I loved these guys:

Hardly. We've had those types of shows before. This one was purely about MJ and Jermaine pimping himself out to find someone to perform at that doomed tribute concert he was putting together. The actual show was good though. The contestants weren't all dance crews as there were soloists in the finals too.

oh no... the song doesn't sound bad sped up at all... it would have just been nice to see the dance slower. more like a ballet, as opposed to hip-hop influenced. i don't imagine hip hop-influenced dance to the song itself. when the BPM is raised, then the flow becomes more staccato. for instance, i love what michael does at the end of the live performance of 'stranger in moscow'.

what he does here is obviously influenced by hip hop culture, but somehow he adds the percussive grace of mime and jazz. i don't even know how he does it, but he flows, as if in water. he's making very staccato movements, but they flow. very poetic motions to a very poetic song.

in terms of the 'dance crew' show... it doesn't seem compelling enough for me to watch it. it's a bit too dramatic for my taste. it seems as if television's come a long way from the days of 'star search'... i don't watch television, so whenever someone tells me about show or sends me a link, my brain just can't take it. such is life.

I guess you didn't like what JabbaWockeeZ did to this hit MJ song then

not particularly. i'm not a fan of the song 'PYT' either, so... i'm more into the bob fosse style, when people do dance tributes to michael.

HAPPYPERSON

$1 Billion And 20 Years Ago: Michael Jackson's Thriller... With Legos

On this day in 1991 Michael Jackson essentially signed a $1 billion contract with Sony. Because of this, and also because we have Vincent Price on the brain (see: Dr. Goldfoot), today's video lunch is the classic video of a classic video: Michael Jackson's entire 13-minute "Thriller" reproduced shot for shot with Legos.

Justin Bieber Passes Michael Jackson for U.S. Box Office Crown

Never Say Never
Paramount Pictures

Bieber's 'Never Say Never' takes top domestic box office honors for concert-themed films with $72.2 million, just passing Jackson's 'This Is It.'

Paramount’s Justin Bieber: Never Say Never has now surpassed Michael Jackson This Is It to become the most successful concert-themed movie at the domestic box office.

Through Sunday, Justin Bieber had earned $72.2 million at the domestic box office. Sony’s This Is It grossed $72.1 million domestically.

However, This Is It still holds the worldwide record, having grossed $189.1 million overseas for a global cume of $261.2 million.

Usually, concert films don’t travel well.

Justin Bieber has grossed $10.8 million at the international box office, a solid number, considering that the Jonas Brothers grossed only $4 million internationally, while Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour earned $5 million (Hannah Montanagrossed $65 million domestically).

Paramount insiders believe Justin Bieber could ultimately earn $20 million internationally. So far, the movie has done best in Latin America, where star’s fan base is strongest.

Justin Bieber was produced by Paramount’s low-budget division Insurge Pictures. The studio has shied way from calling the film a concert movie, since it delves into Bieber’s childhood and rise to pop icon status.

Paramount also took the unprecedented step of updating the movie with new footage early in its theatrical release, so as to encourage repeat business. The move worked.

A paltry 100,000 $ difference and this is breaking news? disbelief bored They make it seem like a bloody landslide...

This should hopefully give the estate better incentive to release good material that don't include Jason's fake, goat-like falsetto.

Europeans and Asians always gave it up to American performers, especially ones as influential as Michael. No surprise there. nod

i was getting ready to ask if this was the freddie prinze performance, and indeed, it is! yeah, they did great here... all the brothers i think are talented; most of them (well, all except michael, and to a lesser extent tito and marlon) don't haave a strong work ethic. it would definitely be interesting if jackie followed his dream in sports instead of music.

I think Jackie would be in the Sports Hall of Fame right now! nod

Marlon would've definitely had a great career as an entertainer/comedian...

But all of them were indeed talented, so I can't complain. They shined when they were all together.

there's alternate mixes of Jam and In The Closet that I missed, but is there anything else?

[Edited 3/19/11 22:41pm]

it seems like you've covered most of the ones i would have thought of... a few of them on the list ended up getting 'official' releases, so i'm wondering if songs like 'cheater' or 'can't get ready for losing you' or 'coming home' would be on your list...

there's also the 'personal message from the jacksons' record which came out, for members of their fan club, when thy sang a 'random' song for the b-side. there's also a similar interview done approximately 1970, when the brothers were asked who their favourite actors were.

there's also:

-miss lucky day

-be my girl

-daydreamer ("i can be the editor in chief of time magazine!")

-would ya would ya (this one is quite good)

-25 miles

-one day i'll marry you

-for all time ('dangerous' DAT version)

-the 'two seas' song (when michael was living in bahrain)

-i just can't stop loving you (with original intro, released only on vinyl and original pressings of compact discs)

-heal the world (the signature series version, with spoken intro)

-mind is the magic

-space dance

-the end credits score to 'can you feel it'

those are some of the ones on the top of my head. SHAMON! the ones i highlighted are the ones i really like a lot. a lot of the early ones (like 'she say what' or 'guess who's making whoopie with your girlfriend' are extremely awkward, and 'you can't hurry love' and 'sunny boy' are just too rushed.

people call ME the expert on michael, but you DEFINITELY know more than i do, bboy... if i got a question, i'm comin' to you!

dont already love Nintendo? here is reason to:

Nintendo Rejects Mario Th...eber Movie

The Never Say Never director John Chu wrote a tweet this past Saturday that said “aw C’mon Nintendo! Y won’t u let us use the Mario theme for 15 secs in the @Justinbieber movie…talk about free advertising passed up. Oops.” Nintendo had allowed the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to use The Legend of Zelda theme song for their movie. What does this mean? Either Nintendo doesn’t like Justin Bieber or the Super Mario Brothers theme song is too valuable to allow movies to sample.

hehehe

it seems like you've covered most of the ones i would have thought of... a few of them on the list ended up getting 'official' releases, so i'm wondering if songs like 'cheater' or 'can't get ready for losing you' or 'coming home' would be on your list...

there's also the 'personal message from the jacksons' record which came out, for members of their fan club, when thy sang a 'random' song for the b-side. there's also a similar interview done approximately 1970, when the brothers were asked who their favourite actors were.

there's also:

Lucky Day was released in 2009 so I was kinda iffy about releasing it. I STILL don't know how so many people seemed excited about I Want You Back The Unreleased Masters but it didn't make an impact on the charts. It should've atleast peaked in the top 10.

It's one of the best compilations Motown has released in the last 35 years. People should've bought it more mad

I was kinda unsure about Twenty Five Miles and One Day I'll Marry You either due to them being released on Boogie and Looking Back At Yesterday

I Just Can't Stop Loving You with the intro was released on the first pressing so i wasn't sure about that one either

i had questions about posting some of this stuff too (since a lot of them WERE official releases) but yeah... i saw some of the stuff you posted were released either officially (on some offshoot or special later release), so i figured, well, i'll post a few as well.

the unreleased masters is a great collection! those tracks are gems. motown missed out many times. 'listen i'll tell you how' is PHENOMENAL! people underestimate their work with bobby taylor (who got phased out by gordy. grrrrrrrrr...). and of course, 'buttercup'. i always drool (for lack of a better word) over a STEVIE michael combination...

i was thinking of including 'if i don't love you this way' (the alternate version) but this was also officially released in 1987. i love that version better than the 'dancing machine' version. the strings are lush, and the brothers don't actually sing on it.

yeah, 'one day i'll marry you' was on 'boogie' (i would LOVE to find that on vinyl! (good luck to me... ironically, the natural resources label was catered to rock, but they put 'boogie' on it. i have 'boogie' on CD, though)). 'twenty-five miles' ended up on the same collection as 'if i don't love you this way'- the original soul of michael jackson. i hate the way these collections remixed these tracks, but they seemed to have left 'if i don't love you...' untarnished, unfortunately.

i put 'i just can't stop loving you' for your collection, since i figured that many people have not heard it, as i'm not sure many peple own the vinyl (or first edition CDs of it). it could also be similar to the first editions of HIStory, with 'they don't care about us'. i have all of these on vinyl, so it's always interesting to hear later edited versions.

i thought 'looking back to yesterday' was an interesting collection as well (i have a german tamla/motown pressing of it). but i think the anthology/collection put out in 1995 is the best edition of those songs. some of the 'looking back...' stuff is also remixed, i believe. the anthology is something i would really LOVE on vinyl! i haven't seen anything about it being released in that format though.

the worst thing motown could have ever done was release that 'farewell my summer love' collection. straight garbage! the remixes were HORRENDOUS! the poster inside is nice though. it's on my wall.
