I've been on a Teena kick since I learned of her death. I cannot stop listening to her music. I will miss her so much!

Me too.... One of my favorites is "Stop The World"

Late last night I couldn't stop the tears from falling
Seems like I was crying all night long
Me baby gone away and left me blue
And there's not a lot that me can do
No there's not a lot that me can do

I remember playing this song over and over and my mom's said

Kevin... If you play that song one more time i'm gonna Stop Your Breathing...

lol

"Stop The World" is just heavenly music music That's one of my favorites, and I think it's the best song on 'Robbery'.

I have read every post in this thread and it seems like everything has been covered. We all know how incredible this woman was, and that VOICE. The first time I heard her I stopped dead in my tracks. I was THAT blown away by her voice. I went and bought her entire catalogue on CD and I've been obsessed ever since. I memorized all of her lyrics, every note she sung, watched every performance I could find on Youtube, tracked down rare remixes, etc. I have vinyl copies of Emerald City and Starchild on my bedroom wall. I was even more blown away when I realized she wrote, performed and arranged most all of her stuff.

I even met my bf through a Yahoo Teena Marie message board. I had e-mailed a fan in California looking to buy copies of old Teena performances on VHS (this was before Youtube). She noticed I lived in Maine and she forwarded my e-mail to a friend of hers in Maine who had just moved here and was lonely and looking for friends. It turned out that he lived about 2 blocks from my house. I literally walked to his house a few days later and we've been together 6 years. smile

It's killing me that I'll never hear new music from Teena or watch her live on tv but she gave me hundreds of songs and memories to last the rest of my life. And I would never have met my bf if I had never become a fan. She did that for me too! And he calls me Tony Tee. smile

I love to draw and here are two sketches I did of Teena. I always wanted to send them to her on Twitter or somethng but I never remembered to. I think she would like them. One is a sketch of Lady T and one is my own design called Neferteena. I love you Teena! Your music means SOOO much to me. RIP girl!!

Teena Marie: The Godmother of Hip-Hop

From the Fugees to DJ Lovebug Starski, Teena Marie, aka Lady T, made soulful music that influenced an entire generation of hip-hop.

I don't know what you do, but like Nas in "Book of Rhymes" (at 2:30 in), I pump some Rick James with that Teena Marie. The R&B legend passed away on Sunday at age 54, leaving one of the great vocal legacies in music, in a career that spanned nearly 40 years. From her world-famous and somehow incredibly awesome 1981 rap (at 3:47 in -- complete with pre-Nicki Minaj inflections!) to her catchy 2004 single (with Cash Money Records, complete with contextualizing intro by Birdman/Baby), Teena's career was inextricably intertwined with hip-hop. She was a hip lady who embraced the music that embraced her. Important and fascinating, her rap celebrates a white person's unabashed and unambiguous affection for black culture -- and black audiences returned the love for nearly 30 years.

Her publicist said subsequent to experiencing 2 seizures last month, Teena personally changed the dosage of her seizure meds due to the side effects. That probably wasn't a wise decision.

From www.panachereport.com

Unsubstantiated Rumor:

Hollywood is still in shock over the unexpected death of Teena Marie.

People are also whispering: "Will Eddie Murphy attend Teena's funeral?"

Allegedly, Teena and Eddie had a brief fling after she broke up with Rick James and Teena was heartbroken that she was "kept a secret" in regards to the fling.

Allegedly, she fell in love with Eddie and the song "Midnight Magnet," was dedicated to him.

That or he has good doctors that look after him. If you believe reports, Teena didn't like the medication she was getting to handle the seizure...

Not only did she have some wonderful music, especially her earlier Motown albums, but this woman was a huge part of who I am as a person. Prince was someone I looked up to growing up as a role model when dealing with my gay side and absolutely not giving a damn what anyone thought of it, and Teena Marie was my role model dealing with my "black" side. This woman came out in 1979 on the heels of the disco era and when disco "died" the very next year and white artists were abandoning black music and the majority of the white general public was having absolutely nothing to do with black music whatsoever, this bad ass white woman continued throwing down hard, funky, and black. This woman could have been much more successful than she was but she didn't give a damn, she came in through the black door and stayed in it. She crossed over one time in 1984 and I really don't think she purposely tried to crossover, it just happened. You don't find too many black artists with the strength to throw the finger at crossing over but this woman was white and she absolutely didn't give a damn. She was well loved by the black audience and she loved them right back. As many people have said before..."Teena Marie ain't white, she's just light skinned"....that definately was true. She was a HUGE role model for me when I was growing up dealing with whites that didn't understand me and hated me and will always continue to be a role model for me. This is a huge loss and I still can't believe it.

That's very touching Andy. Lady T (...and YOU) are definitely part of our family.

I read yesterday that T may have been taking a naturopathic remedy for her seizure activity because she experienced side effects from the stronger, traditionally prescribed, medications used for seizures. It can be even harder to get the right dosage of a naturopathilc medication. I have worked some over the years with special needs children who were seizure active, and the intensity of it is heartbreaking on ocasion. Today I feel like somone just snatched my silly little heart and walked away with it.

The music is my only prescription. Today Battucada Suite, Ask Your Momma and Once Is Not Enough are lifting me higher. Ima take a bath in My Dear Mr. Gaye in a little bit - let it flow all over. "I won't be blue..."

And MidniteMagnet, your gifts with a pencil have left me looking for my breath. You seen it?

Yeah his parents separated around 1979. Apparently Lenny was so distraught that he ran away from home. He was also starting to pursue his music career around this time and lived in his car. Apparently Lenny wasn't so far from Teena, I'm thinking Teena must've lived in the same neighborhood and discovered where Lenny was and being generous offered him her place to stay.
