I'm very sure Prince & Madonna are going to be great in 2011, as well as Patti, Chaka, Stevie, and so forth.

But some people close to Aretha better have the courage to tell her she needs to slow down. I hear that she's still trying to recover from her own latest heath issues.

I am still in total shock at this news, Miss Teena was truly one of the greats & she was still delivering the goods on record.

A truly sad day for soul music

I'm sure ReeRee will be OK. Maybe this is what she needed, something to remind her that life is too short to fool around with what you do with your body. I'm still praying for ReeRee.

Roland Martin on Teena Marie's Last Moments

December 27, 2010

Teena Marie, who dazzled R&B audiences for years with her soulful voice and powerful, high-energy stage performances, died Sunday at her home in California.

Mike Gardner, Marie's manager, told me that Marie died after her 18-year-old daughter, Alia Rose Brockert was unable to wake her in her bed (Marie was born Mary Christine Brockert in Santa Monica, California). No cause of death for the 54-year-old four-time Grammy Award nominee has been released pending an autopsy by the coroner's office, Gardner said.

Lynn Jeter, Marie's publicist, said a month ago, the singer suffered a grand mal seizure. "Her and her little girl were watching a movie," Jeter said. "(Alia Rose) was in the bed with her. Luckily someone was there. They called 9-1-1. The ambulance took her to the hospital. On the way, she had another seizure."

Jeter said Marie couldn't get an appointment with a neurologist for nearly three weeks, and she was provided medication to handle the seizure. But Jeter said that the medicine prescribed "made her suicidal," so Marie "reduced the meds herself." Neither Jeter nor Marie's family would reveal to me what specific medication Marie was administered for the seizures.

Jeter said she and Marie talked at least once a week, and sine the seizure, twice a week. Jeter said they had a "great" conversation yesterday, and Marie was excited about heading to Atlanta to perform this week, her first concert since suffering the seizure. "She evidently died in her sleep and her daughter found her," Jeter said.

News of Marie's death initially spread across social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. As different followers asked me about it, I brushed off the news because there were no official reports confirming the death.

Comedian Kym Whitley tweeted that Marie was in fact alive, so when I called her, she put me on a three-way call with Jeter. Jeter said she tried to reach out to Marie today as the rumors of her death heated up online, but she was unable to do so. So she told me to call Gardner. When I dialed his cell and asked about Marie, he simply said, "It's true."

When I called Jeter back, she had gotten in touch with Marie's home and described the scene there.

And once Marie's death was confirmed, I reach out to many of her friends, associates and admirers in the entertainment world, who talked about her tremendous impact.

I havent post on the org in months so I am going to have my say on the beloved late Teena Marie and I noticed she also have a huge following on the org. But even though I was too young to remember Teena Marie during her peak in the 80s, however in the 90s when I was a teenager while my peers were listening to whatever music that was hot then, I have this old soul (or old funk), and my local radio station who at the time was not corporate run but was independent local station, often played her hits of the 80s and onto the 90s. So a lot of us young generation (who are now between ages of 20-35) did appreciated Ms. Lady T music.

Pretty much everyone covered on here what I want to say. I am going to miss her deeply, and I was thinking about her the other day and even caught her performance on Soul Train on Centric channel a couple weeks, and she is amazing, very hard working and high energy with that small frame she had. Her and Rick James were very powerful and amazing singing duo that I truly like and admired them. Despite their faults to me they were one of the best musicians that I like and sadly they do not get the respect they deserved.

I also like her band Ozone and the song Gigolette she was great on there with her feature vocals on the song.

Again RIP to Vanilla Child and I missed you already gurl. And my heart goes out especially to her only child and also Teena Marie's closest family and friends.

Berry Gordy has shared his feelings on Teena's passing.

Gordy stated:

I am horrified by the sudden death of my darling Teena Marie. She was my “baby,” always true to herself, always true to her heart. When I first auditioned her she was so awesome she blew me away. She had so much soul – the only thing white about her was her skin. She was a powerhouse performer, writer, producer and arranger. Anyone who ever saw her perform, alone or with Rick James, will never forget how exciting music can be.

My heart goes out to her sweet, sweet daughter, Alia Rose, her family, friends and fans.

Teena Marie will always be a part of the Motown family. We will all miss her.

Yeah it's a love-hate thing. Just like how Marvin said it was lol Funny how Berry is outliving more than half of his artists alone on the label. Just sayin'.

Yeah I know what you mean. hrmph lol

But yeah Marvin was right. One minute he wanted to wring his neck, the next thing you know he and Berry are embracing (like they did at the end of Motown 25).

I thought that final embrace was sad considering what happened to Marvin just a year later. sad
