Teena who?

I can imagine some people here having grown up with a disco-singer like her, and feeling sorry for her loss.

But when Solomon Burke died, that thread didnt receive more then like 20 answers. That shows that in the eighties people allready did loose sense of artistic merits. So to cherish a REAL soul singer i give it up for Solomon:

I'm sitting here now, blasting her music on my iPod in shuffle mode. I swear this woman hit the whole musical landscape, covering many genres from jazz, blues, soul, R&B, rock, pop and even a little hip-hop/poetry for good measure. Not many females have been able to touch her as a musician and virtuosic harmonies and rhythms are just unmatched. From 1979's Wild & Peaceful to 2009's Congo Square, Teena brought the funk, fire and love. What a musical legacy she has left behind!

I just revisited this classic last night after hearing about her death and I fell back in love with it. It's quickly becoming a favorite. I'ma have to pull out the Robbery LP out tonight and spin it.

If I could paint a picture
Of the love I have inside

It would paint all of you and all of me
Without no thought of pride

Then maybe you would know
Exactly all the things I feel
Not just a maybe
But baby, I'm for real

'Cause I've been wishin' on the stars and hopin'
Just as it shoots across the sky
Searchin' for the so-called answers
That we're supposed to find in time

Dear Lover is one of those Teena Marie songs that almost every home in the hoods of New Orleans have a cassette copy of. If I leave Little Rock right now and travel to New Orleans, I bet you they will play this track tonight. cool

I had always longed for Teena to record a jazz album. "I'm Gonna Have My Cake (And Eat It Too), "Tune In Tomorrow" and "Cassanova Brown" were all sublime! My favorite song from her is "Yes Indeed":

"You are the seed and the grain of every harvest.

Planted in love by a Being far beyond this."

That woman was an exquisite songwriter.

No,she wasn't rolleyes Sure,"I Need Your Lovin" was disco-influenced,but jams like "Behind The Groove" and "Square Biz" are pure funk. Most of her music can rightfully be called R&B.

Wow, I didn't believe it at first because the internet has "killed" off plenty of people that weren't actually dead this year. It finally sank in last night and I've been playing her music nonstop all day.

And can somebody tell BET to forget about doing a tribute at next years awards show?

The last thing we need is Keyshia Cole screeching 'Lovergirl.' confused

I posted to the Solomon Burke thread. I don't recall you doing the same.

wow.... he didnt even post on Solomon's thread but come in here starting shit about why she's getting so much love...

Clearly, he's preoccupied.

Ok, now Teena Marie, Rick James and all black artists that have ever lived are Disco..

oh and, James Brown should be called The Godfather of Disco, 'cus clearly he ain't a

soul artist either. Only Solomon Burke was a soul singer. Funny but true, his name

was Soulomon, he then changed it to Solomon to make it shorter and because it

sounded more like Salmon, a fish sort that he really loved. And since we brought

that up and now that we know that Teena, Rick, DeBarge and Cameo are disco,

it's time to face the truth on some other artists:

Michael Jackson: forget the king of pop title, because he was disco too!

Madonna: heavy metal

David Bowie: house/electro

Elvis Presley: punk rock

Whitney Houston: country

John Lennon: R&B

Marvin Gaye: bubblegum pop

Now that we all know, can we concentrate on Teena Marie again? confused

May you rest in peace, my beautiful queen, Teena Marie rose
