Shouldn't that be the other way around? Material Girl was recorded in 84, and Can You Feel It in 1980.

Were people just more laid back about this stuff in the 80's? Or is it down to the artist to chase up suspected copycat syndrome? I always thought it was unfair that Janet had to credit Des'ree for Got Till It's Gone, because of the similarity in the way she sings the verses. And yet some of the other examples on this thread seem to be a much stronger case for rip-offs...

Stevie definitely ripped the beat for "Part-Time Lover" from Hall & Oates "Maneater".

That wasn't a rip off. Dr. Dre did the remix to the single using the same track from Explosive. The album version of the song sounds completely different. 100% better than the remix but completely different.

This here reminds me a lot of Erotic City:

It came out before Erotic City was released but I wouldn´t rule out the possibility that maybe they heard Erotic City somewhere, maybe in the studio, BEFORE they wrote and released White Horse.

Because I read somewhere on the org that they used to be pretty tight with Prince back in the day and that there even was a WB 12" release with a Prince song on the A-side and a Laid Back song on the B-side.

Or Prince just used their song as an inspiration and took it to the next level. lol

I mentioned that earlier in this thread. I def think that "White Horse" was an inspiration to "Erotic City", and I even remember at one point, some orger said that Prince was pretty fond of Laid Back, so who knows?

Yeah, I saw your post, too, but there was no youtube link . What I read on the org was that he was fond of them and they were fond of him but.....I still don´t know what came first.

Either they wrote and released White Horse and Prince got inspired to write Erotic City, or Laid Back heard some unreleased version of Erotic City on some acetate or tape that Prince made them listen to and then they released White Horse before Prince could release Erotic City.

I really don´t know. I would hate to think that one of my favorite Prince songs was inspired by that lame Laid Back duo. I´d rather live in denial and believe that they somehow copied from Prince. lol

But you never know. Release dates don´t mean anything, maybe they DID hear Prince´s song before any of the two songs was released and they just came out with it first.

Have you ever heard about that Laid Back/Prince 12" maxi single? Was it just a promotional release for radio stations?

I won't say Larry ripped backstrokin the way he did I Found Lovin for Cashflow's Mine All Mine

but you can tell Larry listened to a little Fatback Band along the way.
