I also have issues with Lady GaGa. She's not doing TnA the same way other young female performers are, but she is showcasing a weird sort of titillation and ripped-off quasi-Glam image to hide the fact that she's just so-so in the talent department.

Sorry but who are you to judge talent? Like her or not, she has a talent for writing catchy tunes. She's wrote for a lot of other singers as well. Until you're giving your acceptance speech for your Grammy, you have no right to dictate who has talent & who doesn't. Although I am sick of these half-dressed sluts parading around & miming live when there are much greater musicians living in the gutter, at least Lady Gaga is doing something different....

Anyway, it's a bit of a double negative bitching about people in the music business selling SEX on a PRINCE fansite, the man is the biggest sexually provocative musician in the world! He's a made millions singing about sex, it's just how it is...

A) I don't need to be a Grammy-winning artist to hear that Lady GaGa is nothing special. I have nothing against her, it's just that my ears work. What she's doing musically really is only a touch better than her competition. The attention she gets is for her image.

B) I have no problem with sexually provocative performers who have talent behind them to back up whatever raunch they perform. I'm not talking about the likes of Prince. This thread, if you'd taken the time to actually read my original post, is about young female performers who parade sex without having much, if any, musical talent to justify it. Now, unless you're going to attempt a comparison between the musical careers and artistic direction of Prince and Britney Spears I'd suggest you put a halt to your temper tantrum.

Either you're sexy are you're not and it doesn't have a damn thing to do with removing a stitch of clothing. I'm bored by it all really and for the most part, these folks taking it off.... don't a have a bit of talent. I guess they have to do something to kinda distract use from that fact.

I guess so. Sad, isn't it, when we're expecting to fall all over ourselves for singers who can't sing.

But they can get naked in their videos, so I guess our ears are supposed to be satisfied.

I am tired of all these young female singers posing half naked in magazines (see Rihanna's GQ shots) or posing with a Come Hither look on their album covers, or wiggling their asses in their music videos.

It's boring, and IMO nothing is more indicative that a performer doesn't really have much of an act at all if they've got to resort to Playboy style to get their image out.

I'm tired of being sold singers who are all tits 'n' ass, and no voice.

I don't know why people are just now starting to figure out that in entertainment sex sells.

The industry pushing someone who looks good over someone who sounds good has been going on since the advent of television.

We all know that there are singers and musicians in Baptist Churches across the country that would slay anyone on a Major Record Label.

The biggest difference between then and now is that the music business has become so corporate. Everything looks and sounds the same.

Back then, every region had their own labels and stars to look up to.

Now that music has become one big monopoly, all the diversity that was once there is gone.

SO SICK AND TIRED OF TALENTED AND UNTALENTED WOMEN SELLING THIER BODIES.

This current state of women’s image in the media and music is disgusting and very disturbing. Indeed selling 'sex' as some of you have put it has been going on for years but in the past it was more about high ting pretty faces and now the levels of nudity, revealing dress and vulgar overly sexual body movements (would call it dance of it was) is shocking and I would call it nothing more than selling your body for profit whether its getting a hit, sponsorship or publicity.

Women in the 21st Century think they have got it in good and we have in many ways but lets face it they degrade themselves on a daily basis but getting their kit off for a profit and then sugar coat by saying they have been empowered. Very few singers with the exception of Leona Lewis, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion and Whitney do not sell their bodies.

Beyonce is one of the worse but because she is quiet and dignified in other aspects people have forgotten to mention that she has been naked for half the decade. The new video of Beyonce and Lady Gaga (I’m so dumb, ugly and have limited talent I have to act mad so people can see me like as a legend) is bordering on pornographic. And others are following suit Ciara and Britney’s raunchy videos where they are wearing leoptards just goes to show how things are getting worse.

This is not just about wearing revealing clothes this is nothing new all us girls are guilty of that it the nasty dancing and the empathise on the female private parts. Correct me if I’m wrong but generally its not decent for us women to walk around with our legs open and the same applies to the silly celebrities.

The Pussycat dolls for example look like and act like hookers from the streets of New York in 1987. Again correct me if I’m wrong but a bra and knickers are not clothes … Please save your private parts for your husband.

Sadly its those with no talent that feel they must result to this….. A list or not a lot of these stars are dressed no better than Katie Price

I got to say I agree with the original post. While I think Beyonce is immensly talented, you only have to see her live to appreciate this, but her last video was like watching a pole dancer. I'm slighlty perplexed why a performer of this calibre seems to conform to such R&B stereotypes. As for Lady Gaga, I got to say that the first time I saw here on jonathon ross, I thought she was a bit of a dick. But she is growing on me, she does seems to have a least more talent than the average performer, and she is at least trying to cultivate a new image which is very reminiscent of Bowie etc..

I would not say that Beyonce is immensley talented she is a great performer and has a great voice ... thats where her talents ends she is the most overhyped and overated woman in music history and I'm sick of her. Long list of mediocare songs and videos that like substance. She is on her way of becoming a super start yet she does mot have the back catcologue to back it up. She is a meduim sized fish singing in a very small pond.

I don't even listen to most of that kind of music and I can't ignore. It's unavoidable. I can't turn on the TV,or go online, or pick up a magazine withou seeing some young woman "singer" damn near naked.

Funny, I don't recall The Supremes ever posing naked for Playboy, or writhing and wriggling in their performances, or dressing like strippers.

Of course sex sells. Everyone knows that. But it's gone way, WAY overboard now when it comes to young female performers. And most of these acts have no talent behind the ass shaking.

Sex has always and will always sell. There is no changing this. As I have said many times on here before, the problem isn't singers selling sexual images; the problem is HOW MANY SINGERS ARE SELLING SEXUAL IMAGES. At one point, it was reserved mostly for artists who didn't have instinctively commercial voices or singing abilities but who were very attractive (Vanity comes to mind) or artists' who's looks or dancing abilities were their stronger points. Nowadays, its become a requirement rather than an "exploit their best strengths" kind of thing. Its almost a guarantee that if you are fat and not conventionally attractive (i.e., pop market pretty), you will not get put on by larger labels because they can't merchandise you as well as they could someone more attractive. These are the facts. Sad, but true.
Please avoid references to Susan Boyle because 1. she came from a reality show, which has a different set of rules and 2. she is a NOVELTY. I'm sorry but its true. She's very talented but also physically unattractive in a way that makes her a novelty. And before anyone tries to diss me for being honest, what woman on here would trade her looks to look like Susan Boyle? I thought not.
Anyway, there are some really talented women in the market whose talent stand out but they are not pushed by the mainstream and never will be. People have to support these artists and keep them eating if they want them to keep making good music. So, the next time Angie Stone, Ledisi, some other artist with great material or great talent comes through town - go to the show. Enjoy the music and don't worry about who's on t.v. and magazines and who isn't. Those chicks are there for their looks.
The balance is off in the industry; that's why its failing. People would rather SEE their music artists than hear them; that's also contributing to the demise of the music industry.

Who's posing for Playboy? It really doesn't matter because famous women have been posing for Playboy since the very 1st issue.

As for the "dressing like strippers". Women have been dressing provocatively since the beginning of time.

25 years ago, Madonna and Vanity "dressed like strippers".

20 years before that, Tina Turner was stimulating jacking off her microphone.

Sexy in her own way without having to show anything but talent.

But then again, I guess she's not weird enough, doesn't have a gimmick and many people prefer to be bamboozled musically.

I agree. It's tough defending Beyonce's performance skills when she discredits herself by continuously being lewd in her videos. That "Video Phone" video is just horrible to me. It's like she should feel embarrassed about it, but I'm sure she doesn't. There isn't even a need for her to be SO overtly sexual in her choreography, nor her costumes, but she continues to display that type of imagery. I don't understand it either. Yeah, she's got a great figure to show off, but so does just about every other female music star, so being half-naked is not surprising or exciting anymore. I think she would sell more if she became more conservative, since that way, more mature people would respect her work. Now, her audience is just about 30 and under. She would get the older crowds, including senior citizens, lol, if she covered up some.

When has any Pop Star cared about courting and older audience when they're still in their 20's.

Why is Beyonce all of a sudden the poster girl for Trashiness?

All these women were and are way more trashy on stage and in their videos than Beyonce ever was.

At least Beyonce is a grown woman being overtly sexual. Unlike this teenage girl who's supposedly "saving herself", yet doing stuff like this on stage.

You've named 3 women who dressed and acted provocatively, out of dozens from those eras who were popular musical performers. Today, you could only name about 3 who DON'T dress and act "like strippers," lol. The level of sexuality tolerated in music has increased significantly, and for the worse. It is nothing like how it used to be, where both revealing and non-revealing female singers could be equivalently famous. If that was the case, a totally covered artist with interesting music videos like, I don't know, Janelle Monae, would be the most popular singer on the planet. Besides, during the late 80s-mid 90s, the top-selling women were not obscene like the former minority including Madonna and Vanity: Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, TLC, etc. This whole "sex sells" garbage didn't become overwhelming like it is now until like 2003, lol.

Maybe you should move to a country where women wear veils in public and are forbidden from showing their ankles.

I'm sorry, TLC didn't sell sex?

After their 1st album, they wore less clothing and sold more records.

Janet Jackson wasn't obsene?

So I guess songs like Robe Burn are Family Friendly???

Well I wouldn't call the pole dancing from 'Party In The USA' AMA performance sexually provocative (that's where the Miley pic comes from right?) As for Madonna, well, she was provocative but she was at a time when it was viewed as pushing the boundaries, not as doing whatever everybody else is doing. And who is the lady in the second pic?

I completely agree with you, and you're right about them. I happen to be a fan of Beyonce, and can't stand the examples you posted, LOL. I do not think B. is a trashy character like them. My point was that unlike people like Spears and Miley Cyrus, Beyonce is a veritable singer and performer, who, in my opinion, shouldn't have to rely on being half-dressed and sexual on stage to be successful. And you're also correct when you say that in comparison to someone like Cyrus, Beyonce is a grown woman. That's true and she can do what she wants, but I just think she would be taken more seriously if she toned her image down somewhat. But then again, maybe I'm wrong. shrug

And to answer your first question: Michael Jackson. LOL. "From the very young, to the very old...." And also, Whitney Houston.

As for Madonna, well, she was provocative but she was at a time when it was viewed as pushing the boundaries, not as doing whatever everybody else is doing. And who is the lady in the second pic?

You don't think a 15-16 year old girl Pole Dancing sexually provocative???

It damn sure looks that way to me.

The lady in the 2nd pic is Vanity.

She's a POP STAR!!!

They're not supposed to be taken seriously!!!

I could see if she was dressing conservatively for 10 years and then all of a sudden started dressing sexy.

That might be a reason to get upset.

When Meshell Ndegeocello starts dressing like Beyonce, then maybe you should start being concerned.

Look, you're a dude man. You wouldn't understand my perspective anyway. That type of comment isn't even necessary.

And like I said, late 80s-mid-90s. "Fanmail" didn't come out until 1999, and "Velvet Rope" was in 1997. Before then, yeah Janet and TLC showed their shoulders, or waists under baggy clothes, but except for that Rolling Stone cover Janet did in '93, that was it, until the late 90s.

A) I don't need to be a Grammy-winning artist to hear that Lady GaGa is nothing special. I have nothing against her, it's just that my ears work. What she's doing musically really is only a touch better than her competition. The attention she gets is for her image.

I agree, but I have to admit she is interesting. I know the music is nothing amazing, but she's fun to watch.

Her being half nude is, to me, more like Prince or Madonna being half nude (with the exception that Prince is the only musical genius of the three) in that she seems fully in control of the situation. It's about image, yes, but not about a desperate attempt to get attention without knowing any other way. I think she'd get attention even fully clothed.

They showed more than their shoulders and waists in baggy clothes in the Creep video and Love Will Never Do.

BTW, I didn't mean to offend you with the Veil thing. I was just trying to make a joke.

Blurring the line between music & porn doesn't only ruin music, it ruins porn! The Pussycat Dolls are not good for either purpose.

It's gotten so bad that I actually can appreciate American Idol for at least requiring that their contestants have just the slightest bit of musical talent!

I totally agree! I like a few artists who are guilty of such antics (Janet, Madonna, Kylie to name a few), but they generally have something else beneath the artifice. That said, my 3 favorite albums of 2009 belong to Annie, Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes) and Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), all chicks who get by without pushing the sexual angle.
Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!
