Yes, but at least she gives back to the community.

all she does is cater to white women. White people in general. I like her show and everything but correct if i'm wrong but i haven't seen a lot of shows where she discusses black issues. I remember watching Ricki Lake and they were talking about the down low problem in the african american community as well as other shows on racism and interracial dating that Ricki has done. I also heard that there was an interview in the late eighties where she said she wished she was white.

I don't like the fact that Oprah is doing a MJ special because she's talked all types of trash about him.

But as far as her catering to white women, I'll never understand that. I'm a black woman who watches Oprah regularly. She isn't my idol and I don't always agree with everything that she says, but I find her show to be very inspirational and informative. And perhaps she doesn't deal too much with "black issues" to me, what she does is more important and bigger than that. She deals with "human issues". Instead of trying to segregate people, she has positive and beneficial topics that almost everyone can relate to. Or perhaps it's just me. I tend to think of myself first as a person, not a color.

Maybe I'm wrong for saying this, and I know that Oprah is a ratings whore, but why did Oprah have to say anything about MJ after he was aquitted back in 05? Kinda like people saying that Prince had to make a statement about MJ after he passed away?

Reporting on newsworthy occurrences is Okrah's JOB that's not Prince's job so I didn't expect nor was I surprised when he made no comment.

The reason it's odd to me that she has YET to say anything about MJ's death is because she is in the business of reporting on current events. She always has something to say about EVERY major news event. For her not to make ANY comment from a professional standpoint about a HUGE story like Michael's passing is odd to say the least.

This story is second only to Obama's presidency as far as big stories in '09. And she reported on that to DEATH. What major news station or show hasn't said SOMETHING about MJ? To have the biggest talk show host on the planet, a former reporter, remain silent on this story for almost three months is not normal or accidental.

When MJ passed, Ms. Winfrey show was on hiatus from middle/late June till August. It used to be she did her show live in Chicago (9am central time) but she stopped doing that 'bout decade ago. It's my understanding that during the summer her staff are making arrangements for guest to appear on her show for the fall/winter/spring season. Ms. Winfrey could've come and done a tribute show in realtime. But maybe she and her staff decided instead of doing something hodgepodge, they'd wait and do something a bit more polished. I don't know. I'm not sure how others in the Jackson family feel about her, but it hasn't kept Janet Jackson from appearing on her show to push cds, films, or damage control after the Super Bowel fiasco. Why? Because Ms. Winfrey had the top rated show, its buiness. shrug

Actually she was on a cruise with her staff. I'm not saying she needed to film a show but I did expect SOME statement. Just about every celeb called in to Larry King or issued a formal statement within hours or days of his death. But, she's not just a regular celeb, she's the most visible media personality in the country with a tv show AND magazine. Yet, she says nothing and still hasn't months later??? whofarted

Exactly.

Calling her the C-word for simply talking about the MJ interview is pretty extreme. Calm down. I'm sure she tried to get him to do an interview after but unlike Geraldo and others, she isn't going to bend over backwards and/or be a total sycophant. She shouldn't have to.

I think it goes a lot deeper then that. There was a sense that she could take time out of a show to "warn" him after the whole baby dangling thing, like he was some crazy person, but when he is acquitted because his "criminal" trial was bogus, she is dead silent.

Maybe she is all about ratings, but to a lot of people, Oprah, to many, (foolishly in my opinion) is an icon. She should be more about ratings.
She should have done a special about Michael A LOT sooner, but sadly she
has shown with this move she is not much better than Diane Diamond
.

Maybe it is 2 words, and not 1..so 2 words

Ratings whore.

i would normally agree with the first statement.

HOWEVER, i agree more with vanilli's reasons for using this word to describe her. like vanilli, i have been utterly, utterly perplexed by her popularity, and maybe that goes toward my general disdain. in my mind, she's always been a crass opportunist and her 'interview' with mj in '93 was a shallow and embarrassing exercise for both of them. but given her hateful 'bandwagon' jumping when mj was in trouble, this 'tribute' is a low even for her.

I remember ater the Bashir documentary aired,Oprah spoke about it on her show. She had a message directed at Michael: "It's wrong to allow young boys to sleep in your bed with you,and I would say the exact same thing to my own brother if he were doing this".

hmmm In defense of Oprah, you have to understand that she herself was sexually abused at a young age,so I think she was really conflicted/confused about the MJ allegations and trial. As a popular talk show and icon who routinely does shows about sexual abuse, she couldn't be seen as "endorsing" MJ's behavior. It was a tough position for her to be in.

b/c i can't stand oprah and only saw snippets of the interview, i can't totally vouch for my memory, but i could have sworn mj stated in her interview that he often had slumber parties with the little cancer patients that came to the ranch. if that sort of thing was so wrong, why didn't she call him out then?

i don't think projecting her experiences with abuse onto mj is an excuse for her to bash him. she could have invited him onto the show and given him a forum to further explain, like geraldo did, especially since she had been to neverland and had to know it wasn't the house of horrors bashir and the prosecutors had made it out to be. she could have been a woman about it and told her feelings to mj's face.

but then again, i don't expect much from her.

yeah, enuf with the lame defenses of oprah. didn't she issue a statement about the kennedy who just died? wasn't she was on vacation/hiatus then?

on edit: yes, she did. it's posted at her website. so if she had wanted to make a statement about mj's death, she could have. but it's business so she's going to ride the wave of 'mourning' and exploit mj for ratings. he gave her great ratings in '93, no reason to think he won't again.

i have often said i wouldn't be a good entertainer b/c you have to compromise yourself a lot. a few years back a poster on another board mentioned janet's willingness not only to go on oprah's show, but that major, major mj hater, rosie o'donnell's show and i was the only one who agreed with her questioning of janet's integrity on that. every other poster didn't have an issue with it - just business. i'm sure when their reality show gets ready to premiere, the jackson 4 will do oprah's show to promote it. neutral

That would have been a great idea...inviting MJ to her show (after his trial) to discuss his side of the story. However,I have a feeling that he would have declined.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Janet appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell show in 2001,just before the release of her 'All For You' album. It wasn't until a few years later that Rosie called MJ a "pedeofile".She had seen him at a party and refused to speak to him. Before this, her feelings about MJ were unknown (I think).I doub that Janet would have appeared on her show if she had known about those vicious comments about her brother.

One word: CUNT.

Sorry it had to be said. She is strictly doing this for ratings. She had plenty of chances during Michael's last few years to reach out for interviews or even after his NOT GUILTY verdict to support someone, but now suddenly after his death and he is buried in the ground, she suddenly champions him as some african american revolutionary.

What a total phony.

Don't be stupid about it. People have TV shows for RATINGS. Of COURSE she's going to do a show about him. He was one of the few people to interview him, and even do it in his home, while he was still at the height of his career. Shows w/ no real ratings don't stay on the air. Oprah's been doing this for 5000 years. You think she had Prince on for anything other than rating, and perhaps a personal curiosity? You wouldn't be screaming the same nonsense if she did a show on Prince when he dies. "OMG what a lovely tribute, did anyone record it?" is all you and others would say. Oprah's show was on vacation through the summer, as a lot of shows are, so of course she's going to cover it now that she's back.

And who says she didn't reach out after the verdict to interview him? I don't remember ANY interviews w/ him after that right away, so it goes to say that no one got an interview w/ him. He was in Bahrain shortly after, purposely to stay away from the media, etc. Not sure who said she was going to "suddenly champion" him about anything. Don't over think it.
