CARDIFF (Reuters) - "Queen of pop" Madonna entered the stage on a throne on Saturday as she kicked off her world tour, and defied her age with athletic dance routines before tens of thousands of screaming fans. The U.S. singer, who turned 50 a week ago, opened her "Sticky & Sweet" tour at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, with "Candy Shop". She wore a black leotard-style outfit designed by fashion house Givenchy and black, knee-length boots. For her second number, "Beat Goes On", Madonna drove along the stage catwalk in a white car from which she emerged wearing a white top hat. U.S. rappers Pharrell Williams and Kanye West, who featured on Madonna's latest chart-topping album "Hard Candy", appeared in video clips, as did Britney Spears. Madonna will be hoping to shatter her own record for the highest-grossing tour ever by a female artist and prove that the musical master of reinvention still has what it takes to pull in crowds young and old. "It was so charismatic," said Paul, from the Welsh city of Newport, after the show. "I don't believe she's 50. She's more like 30." "I think she's amazing," added Morgan, a young girl from Cardiff. "I want to be that way when I turn 50." During the show Madonna played around 20 songs which spanned a career of nearly three decades, including "Like A Prayer", "Into The Groove" and "Hung Up" The concert moved from a homage to 1920s art deco to the early 1980s music scene in New York, the city where, according to online biographies, Madonna moved in 1977 to pursue a career in dance with just $35 in her pocket. Promoters Live Nation, who recently signed Madonna to a 10-year deal reported to be worth $120 million, said Madonna and her band clocked up 653 hours of rehearsal time before launching "Sticky & Sweet". The tour comprises some 50 dates and is due to wrap up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on December 18. As of Thursday, roughly half the tour venues had yet to sell out including Cardiff, although Live Nation announced in June that the tour was on target to gross more than $250 million. Guinness World Records list Madonna as the world's most successful female recording artist of all time and she has sold around 200 million albums. The Sunday Times estimates Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie's fortune at around $600 million. But the last few years have not all been easy for Madonna. Her decision in 2006 to adopt a young Malawian boy whose mother died was controversial in Africa and further afield. Madonna has two other children -- son Rocco with British film director Ritchie and daughter Lourdes from a previous relationship. The family was in Cardiff to watch the show. She directed her first feature film that came out in 2008 to mixed reviews, and her eight-year marriage to Ritchie has come under increasing scrutiny amid reports the couple planned to divorce. Both Ritchie and Madonna have denied the reports. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

LONDON: It should come as no surprise that the queen of pop is again courting controversy. The first show of Madonna's world tour made a foray into U.S. politics with a none-too-subtle dig at U.S. presidential hopeful John McCain Saturday night.
Images of destruction and global warming flashed on to a screen during a video interlude. Those were followed by pictures of Adolf Hitler, Zimbabwe's authoritarian ruler Robert Mugabe — and McCain. A later sequence showed slain Beatle John Lennon, climate activist Al Gore, Mahatma Gandhi and finally McCain's democratic rival, Barack Obama. Once the interlude was over, Madonna threw herself into a rave-inflected rendition of "Like a Prayer." She finished off the concert with her thumping "Give it 2 Me" from her new album "Hard Candy." It was truly amazing! I am horse from screaming and my head hurts from so much dancing. There was so much that was good about the show. That bottom pic with the fire / round screen thing was so cool. It had all kinds going on it - at one point it was raining on the screen and it rained all around her, it was visually stunning. I loved the fringed wig at the end - all of the photo's in the programme have Madonna in that fringe and are very sexy photos. I can't believe how much she has managed to change her body shape again, her stomach is amazing, so hard looking. The skipping in old skool or whatever segment was so fast paced. It really made me smile and she's not me was funny with all those old incarnations of Madonna up there being pushed around by Madonna. Seriously it was great. There was a pretence of an encore but that was for give it to me which was written into the set list anyway so no big surprises. My sister works there and got to hear the sound check and at the end apparently she went from the staduim in minutes and over to Germany?? Seems very quick to just up and go to Germany?? Hope some more photos come out soon I want to relive a bit more! Lisa Have you had your + signs today?

Oooo the pics look great!
One of the many amazinig things about Madonna is that for a woman of 50, she seems to be pretty injury free. I know she does yoga and is in excellent shape, but I wonder if she has bad knees, hips, or anything just due to the nature of what she does? (Of course, I read about her horsebacking riding injury, but I am speaking more to injuries often plaguing dancers or other athletes--even those with access to the best trainers, etc. I wonder if the choreographers work around any injuries she might have? She looks wonderful, but still those are 50 year-old joints, and even Madonna cannot escape time overall.

Okay...
I have been a bit relectant to post this review as I hate seeing people spoiling anyone else's enjoyment/raining on their parade, etc., - and I really *don't* want to seem negative - but here's my review, as I saw it. And I am really disappointed to have to type this out. I suppose I should put the disclaimer in that - perhaps - my experience was (stupidly) influenced by a hangover from the night before and a stressful day of trying to get things organised with my mates. I'd gone out Friday night, for someone's Leaving do, and one too many shots of tequila really did their damage on Saturday. Still, I was feeling a lot better as the day went on and - apart from having to constantly juggle calls from four mates I was supposed to be meeting up with, which was a bit stressful - by the time I got to the stadium, I really was up for a good night. So that my have had an influence, admittedly, but I honestly don't think so. (Although I won't be going out with the office the night before I go to see my next concert ). This was the third concert I'd attended by Madonna and, whilst I think nothing will ever match my 'Confessions...' experience (where I completely lucked out and managed to get front row standing, last minute, inches from Madonna ; and that DOES make a difference overall ), I was still in the Golden Circle and only about 15/20 yards away, with a much better view of the stage/production. In fact, I wanted to be a little further back this time round for precisely that reason. It is THRILLING being up so close and staring Madonna in the eyes , but I wanted to take it all in this time. The positives: as always, Madonna is a complete professional, an absolute trouper. She never lets up, gives 100% and you are guaranteed never to walk home bored from one of her shows. If only for the sexy dancers. The setlist was superb - BORDERLINE was in it, for God's sake!! - and the rreports I've read here leading up to the gig are very accurate. Whoever leaked the details was 100% spot-on. Having said that, I walked out of the gig really disappointed. And I can't tell you how much I hate saying that. Going back to the setlist, yes... it is great. But some of the songs - including 'Borderline' - were murdered, imo. One thing I love about Madonna is that she constantly challenges herself and her audience; she never looks back, always forwards, and doesn't always make the ride a smooth one. I don't want to be one of those fans waiting for their idols to repeat themselves over and over again. Yet I really don't want to see Madonna playing rock/indie versions of some of her best loved hits. Yes, the guitar thing was cute the first time round. The second time, it was funny. But is she really going to do it on every tour from here on out? I love her, but who is she trying to convince?? Madonna standing there, with just a guitar, for ten minutes isn't exactly showstopping. That's just my opinion, however. Then there were the dance routines... nothing I haven't seen her do before. And the costumes, imo, are awful. Like something she picked up in H&M. Most of them were dark, dour colours... nothing that made you think WOW. As for the concepts, okay... they were interesting enough, but lacked a sense of cohesion, I thought. Again, fine to look at - but nothing that made you think WOW. I came away from the 'Re:invention' and 'Confessions...' tours thinking I had seen a visual spectacle. So many ideas! So may great backdrops! I came away from the 'Sticky & Sweet' tour thinking she is repeating herself, or running out of ideas. Perhaps she needs a new choreographer or tour designer, I dunno... but when it comes to Madonna, I just expect SO much more; the stakes are higher. Sadly, I felt it wasn't the best she could offer. A few weeks ago, I went to see Kylie and whilst I loved the show, I thought there were a few things obviously borrowed from Madonna; never did I think I'd be going to see Made a few weeks later and thinking Kylie's was the better show. I just expected so much more. However... maybe Madonna doesn't want to have a 'grand statement' this time. Who knows?? The 'Gypsy' segment, I have to say, is a very random part of the show. There were lots of ':whofarted' faces around me, I must say. It is probably the most random thing I have ever seen at her shows and, quite honestly, I thought it was a bit unneccesary. Again, please don;t hate me for saying that, but I spoke to many fans after the gig and the general reaction was 'What the hell was that about?!'. Interesting enough for 5 minutes; after that... But, mainly, I keep thinking back to the way the songs were presented. Some were presented gloriously ('She's Not Me' - wow!); others, murdered by a guitar-wielding Madonna. Again, that's just my opinion, but I spoke to a lot of fans last night and many people were saying the same thing. Like now, I really didn't want to say anything as I hate ruining other peoples' enjoyment; but I heard many people say exactly the same thing. It was Madonna-lite; not what we have come to expect from her. Despite all that, I did have a great time; and two of my mates - who were *right* up close to the stage - loved every single minute. I also heard many fans raving about what they'd seen. It is freaking Madonna, after all! So take my comments with a pinch of salt. I am sure there are many, many Orgers who'll go to see this tour and disagree with me; in fact, I hope they do - I want people to love it. Perhaps I am in the minority. I just hope this doesn't influence anyone or taint their opinion. Go and make your own mind up! On a positive note... even though it was a horrible version , I LOVED singing along to 'Borderline'. 'Into The Groove' and 'Vogue' were also special moments. Best song of the night, for me? 'She's Not Me'. Madonna attacking/defacing lookalike models - against a sea of images of herself from over the years - was fantastic. The more I think about it, maybe I enjoyed it more than I realised. . [Edited 8/24/08 9:34am] In fairness, I spoke to one of my mates earlier and she's already questioning what she thought yesterday (she shared the same opinion as me). So... who knows?? I *did* enjoy it... just it was the least exciting of the three Madonna tours I've seen. As I say, I want others to enjoy it as I hate Debbie Downers. And this will be your first Madonna show!! So go along, with no expectations, and have a great night... I'm sure you will.
